Cut-Out Animation (1993)

April 15, 2009

This is cut-out animation from 1993, (you can probably tell the Jurassic Park influence) making it the oldest video of mine that’s been released public so far. It was done during a Saturday class at an art institute using a stop-motion camera & VCR. It took several months to complete. Originally, it was silent. Sometime in the early 2000’s, I added all the music.

    ?

    ..
    as i said before.

    this isn’ possibly 1993.
that is – sorry – to good to be the work of a early teenager.

who are you trying to fool ?

i like you man, but this isn’t nesecary, is it?

    i mean, c’mon!

  2. RPGaholic April 15, 2009 @ 10:33 pm

I had to laugh when I heard “The Touch”, and c’mon, no AC/DC?

  3. Xiaolang April 15, 2009 @ 10:34 pm

What’s that? An aptosaurus? Weren’t they supposed to be herbivores? XD Anyways, very funny, and educative… who would have thought that a the best way to escape from a huge ass dinosaur is to hammer it’s head? If someday they live again, I will have a hammer right beside my bed.

i am liking all of these Slayer references. This movie could quite possibly have one of the best soundtracks ever. XD

  5. luqycharms April 15, 2009 @ 11:04 pm

This was sweet. I was entertained. I wish I could do things like this.

    MORE…..MORE…..MORE……………

  6. Lansu April 15, 2009 @ 11:52 pm

Was this a UArts Saturday class? :)

  7. RayBacca April 16, 2009 @ 12:58 am

This made me reminisce about art projects when I was in school (I think we are roughly the same age). Hearing “The Touch” in there made me think of Transformers. If you haven’t done anything on them yet, you should think about it.

  8. TehJedicake April 16, 2009 @ 3:27 am

Dude… Fuckin brilliant as usual, you never cease to amaze me James

  9. sleazoid April 16, 2009 @ 5:26 am

    Hahahah, wonderful movie!!

    Just love the dragon’s personality.

  10. edologix April 16, 2009 @ 6:02 am

    nice one :D
especially the bad to the bone part xD

  11. James April 16, 2009 @ 6:52 am

Has anyone noticed the website acting screwy? I switched over to a new server recently. At one point, the entire post disappeared, so I had to re-post it. And now all the comments are erased. Anyone else experiencing this or is it just me?

  12. SG3 April 16, 2009 @ 8:54 am

Yeah, over the last week or so, I’ve had to keep resetting my password in order to log on. Also, I noticed on your Star Trek 2 review, that it read no comments even though there was loads of them.

and about the animation, all I can say is wow, you must have a lot of patience! I’m about the same age as you must have been when you made that, and I can tell from experience, that something like that is impossibly difficult to make, especially when you aren’t using a program like flash to make the frames.

  13. Joel April 16, 2009 @ 10:09 am

It’s not just you James, the website has been acting strange lately, comments are disappearing since last week like SG3 said.

@ EvilMonkey: James has been making videos since he was a little kid and handled a camera way before this video was made, it doesn’t surprise me that he was skilled enough to pull this off at the age of 13 plus take into account that this vid was made over a period of months wich gave him a fuckload of time to fine-tune his recordings.

On the other side, why the hell would he make a video and then lie about how young he was when he shot it, it doesn’t make any sense..

  14. HappyHarry April 16, 2009 @ 10:35 am

    That absolutely rocked.

Loved the sound effects and the guy with the lizard head who jumped out of a bush.

  15. Danomaticc April 16, 2009 @ 12:15 pm

I was just about to post saying that your comment things are being deleted all of the time, but instead when I went to log on, it said my user name did not exsist so I had to register again.

  16. SomeFinnishDude April 16, 2009 @ 1:32 pm

The website is certainly being really strange, James.

I just visited the site and saw the cut-out animation movie for the first time and saw that there were 21 comments. I signed in to write a comment but had trouble loading any pages for a while after that. After a while I could load the front page again but I was not logged in anymore and when I tried to it said my username didn’t exist so I created a new one.
Furthermore the amount of comments is now 6 instead of 22 and all of them are new. I asked a friend of mine who does not have an account at all what he sees and he said he sees the 21 comments I first saw and does not see the new ones.

    Very odd.

Now as for the video itself: The cut-out animation really surprised me, it was far better than what I expected. Really nice work there, James.

  17. Orestis April 16, 2009 @ 4:57 pm

I had to re-register to post a comment.

That was truly AWESOME, tons of work there but great job! Thanks for sharing it, it was really entertaining, and the influences from movies and videogames are obvious.

  18. Orestis April 16, 2009 @ 4:58 pm

And I agree with RPGaholic… No AC/DC? As you said everything is better when the soundtrack is AC/DC :P And they’re coming for live soon!

  19. Jbone0001 April 16, 2009 @ 6:18 pm

Hey ya James I just set up a new account and had to reset my password 2 times in order to log in. It kept saying user name not found or something.

  20. Gravemind April 16, 2009 @ 6:39 pm

I must admin that this video is really funny, it is really good done. You did a great job there!

I am proud of you :P

  21. Optics April 16, 2009 @ 8:24 pm

James, whatever you did it deleted my account. I had to remake it. :(

  22. Xtrife April 16, 2009 @ 9:34 pm

Yeah Had to remake mine as well.. I did notice a problem yesterday when you had twittered a link to this video but the link was broken..I guess that was during the time the post disappeared out of nowhere.

  23. bo898 April 16, 2009 @ 11:48 pm

Nice taste in music man. I noticed you had Pantera playing in Death Puppy as well. I sing in a metal band, but am an oldschool gaming nerd at heart! :)
    …Stan Bush is also god-like

  24. Deefmaster April 17, 2009 @ 12:23 am

Lots of problems here, pretty much everything already discussed. I see posts not there, then I have to register again, and they’re back but with no comments. I thought it was a problem on my end.

I love the animation style. The fact that it is so tedious to do makes the final product even more enjoyable. Awesome details and good music choices. The fight scenes and sound effects remind me of lots of godzilla vs. wwf action figure games I played as a kid, so it even has the nostalgia effect. I wish you had the time to do more of these. Good stuff!

  25. SomeFinnishDude April 17, 2009 @ 5:20 am

I now have two accounts and only one will work at a time. When this one works I see these comments and when the other one works I see the other ones…

  26. Martin Ekdahl April 17, 2009 @ 7:35 am

That was awesome:D No CG there!

  27. Phil-UK April 17, 2009 @ 2:22 pm

Epic animation! the music and sound effects really bring it to life.

my account was deleted as well, just had to sign up again.

  28. Xtrife April 17, 2009 @ 9:13 pm

Okay…there is something weird going on here, earlier today I saw the old post you did with the old comments, and now it’s back to this one that you remade… o_O

  29. moleman124 April 18, 2009 @ 2:08 am

was waiting to hear “I’ll rip out your optics”… never came =(

  30. Richter April 18, 2009 @ 12:01 pm

Count me as one who’s account was lost. And seemingly my previous comments with it.

  31. Gravemind April 18, 2009 @ 12:29 pm

This is always switching. I have two accounts. One for this “Gravemind” and one for the other “Arbiter”.

I hope you can fix this soon :)

  32. Scott April 18, 2009 @ 6:10 pm

Something definitely happened… my account got deleted as well. :(

  33. Paulukmwr April 18, 2009 @ 6:58 pm

oh at last, reregiatered, i wondered what as going on, no biggy.
James i saw this on your your histotry though your film making and finally saw the whole thing. Kind of just half way through your hands appear, but that was awsome to see and it was entertaining as well, especial lthe big eyes that come out if ther about to get burned or in trouble or die, hahahaha, excellent

  34. metalhead666uk April 19, 2009 @ 12:55 pm

    FUCKING SSSLLAAAAAAAYYEEEEERRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. rake April 19, 2009 @ 7:07 pm

Yeah my account was deleted too. It’s possible that the SQL version is different (newer) on the new server, and sometime on the old server the SQL version was changed, so only people who registered after (or before?) the upgrade had their accounts deleted, or more like… unreadable.

Either way, reregistering wasn’t too much of a pain.

PS: “© 2008 The Cinemassacre Productions” at the bottom…
‘He’s gonna take you back to the past’ is right.

  36. Xtrife April 19, 2009 @ 7:15 pm

Okay seriously…what the hell is going on. It’s like the DNS is jumping between the old and the new server within like a 12 hour interval. At least I can’t think of anything else that can explain why I wake up to find the original post you did, and am back to the remade one when I’m about to go to sleep.

  37. UCF00v April 19, 2009 @ 7:15 pm

    account deleted, account back

  38. S_Pac_316 April 19, 2009 @ 10:00 pm

Had to make a new account as well…

So yea, like I said last time, that was EPIC!

  39. Handren April 21, 2009 @ 5:24 am

looks very Wizard & Warriors influenced?

  40. Теория насилия April 21, 2009 @ 6:05 am

  41. Jean Easton April 22, 2009 @ 3:21 pm

Well, that explains why my old profile wouldn’t log in.

  42. explodinburrito April 22, 2009 @ 8:08 pm

great video. if that was slayer(which i think it is. cause tom araya kicks ass) what song was it?

  43. The Grumler April 23, 2009 @ 6:21 am

Amazing… Dunno how old you was but if it’s one of your first videos, it’s really great…

By the way, is there any chance that you’ve been inspired by… say, videogames ? :P

  44. xenorevlis April 24, 2009 @ 3:11 am

The main battle character fought in a style that reminds me of God Hand, No More Heroes, etc.. Very fast, brutal, funny.

You should work with some more current animators and do a little something epic. I enjoy the small stuff in your review videos!

  45. solidsnake1 April 26, 2009 @ 6:28 pm

Not to be wierd but wasn’t this video up in the filmography section?

  46. LindyBum1147 May 10, 2009 @ 1:55 pm

    Contra rock. Nice!

  47. molarmountre May 12, 2009 @ 9:23 am

The second part reminds me a lot of Wizards and Warriors.

  48. Noizgul May 25, 2009 @ 10:50 pm

Some of this reminds me of the boss fights in Joe & Mac. And to the person who asked, the Slayer song in this is “Postmortem”.

  49. Reaver34567 September 8, 2009 @ 6:47 am

Hah! Had me laughing quite a few times. I love the campy, overblown reaction faces, and the piles of ash with eyeballs.

The Dragon also got a makeover half-way through, which confused me a bit. Originally I though you had lost the first, and put in the second as a replacement.. But then you see the original beast in the ending credits. Maybe a film-makers attempt to fuck with our minds?

  50. tomaspeverell November 19, 2009 @ 2:04 pm

What?First they’re driving a car and in next scene three guys are having a sword-fight?Hahaha.
    Anyways it’s very good.Hands down.
