Mike and I playing Odyssey

April 27, 2009

While shooting the Odyssey AVGN video, the only way to record the game footage was right off the TV screen. Mike Matei, who most of you know is behind the scenes often, was playing the games with me. For this particular episode he was very much involved in coming up with many of the jokes. This candid footage shows the thought process that went through it. Playing the Odyssey is an experience most people will probably never have, so this video demonstrates it very well to show what it’s like.

First ! Yay ?? I think. pretty wierd since it was released more than an hour ago I think

anyway. This must be the weirdest oddest funniest process I’ve seen. wow.

It would be fun to see others if its funny like this one.

  2. WarriorSl April 27, 2009 @ 7:49 pm

One thing I can tell you for sure, this is the most fucking hilarious video game that I’ve ever seen!

  3. Tabaschritar April 27, 2009 @ 8:05 pm

All of your videos that you put in a lot of hard work and effort in are fantastic, I love just watching you guys have fun. It’s good to see such natural camaraderie, it’s something that strangely enough, isn’t often captured on film.

  4. Bussani April 27, 2009 @ 8:06 pm

Haha, brilliant. I’m sure the people who didn’t like Nerdy Turd will find this video interesting.

  7. Skolar April 27, 2009 @ 8:39 pm

Thanks for all the great videos!
Would you believe that there is actually an Odyssey 2!

Nerdy Terd was cool. Would have been cool to see the return of Shit Pickle though as well. I love these real old vintage consoles (Pre Atari) great review guys! My son and I laughed hard!

Nice thing is as well, my son is 7 and watches these with me. (He is a good kid and knows whats a joke and to leave it at that) He watches these videos “especially AVGN” and loves to see what video games use to be like. Unlike some kids who just dismiss older game systems, he loves them! So to James, Mike and all the rest, keep up the great work! We loves ya!!

  9. Danomaticc April 27, 2009 @ 9:13 pm

LMFAO I love your behind the scenes stuff. Sounds like you already have a few beers in you when you suggested that, laughed so much at nothing.

Good stuff, I`m guessing you have alot of behind the scene stuff that you dont post. Saving it for the extras on your DVD I suppose.

  10. allanf April 27, 2009 @ 10:05 pm

This is awesome! I know it’s antiquated, but you guys had a lot of fun with this thing. Pong was still a few years away and it’s popularity is still known today! Plus, the Odyssey had cartridges (as bad as the games were) whereas Pong did not.

  11. PekoponTAS April 27, 2009 @ 11:00 pm

This may very well be one of my all time favourite cinemassacre videos. Just two gamers having fun and being goof balls. This is what multiplayer is all about. :)

  12. rake April 27, 2009 @ 11:06 pm

it’s the power of the imagination super station.
i’m glad i was born when i was.

i think the odyssey usually came with about 200 hits of acid to provide graphics. it was the 70’s.

  13. philintheblanks April 27, 2009 @ 11:25 pm

Mike sounds like a hilarious guy to just game with.
What I like about this video, is that you’re showing exactly why people bought the odyssey back then. You didn’t need the graphics or anything. You just need a good friend, some beer and you can have a great time with two lines on a screen!

  14. JexyMG April 27, 2009 @ 11:49 pm

great stuff. the hockey and tennis were hilarious

  15. allxx- April 28, 2009 @ 1:35 am

    TRY BAD DUDES :D

  16. master2872 April 28, 2009 @ 2:31 am

LOL Gotta love this shit through and through, I thought Nerd Turd was ok but I was kinda expecting more like the Battletoads video :P . But I would see why not though not much to talk about the Odyssey.

Anyways always been a big fan
    Sincerely
    Sam

  17. arctifox April 28, 2009 @ 2:31 am

Skolar, of course there was an Odyssey 2, and it also was in the list of the systems James own. Look at the intro of the “Double Vision Part 1″ episode, you’ll see a bit where James opens the box with the best-selling Odyssey 2 game, “KC Munchkin”. It was the episode about Atari’s competitors, and the Odyssey 2 was Atari’s competitor as well. I hope that James will one day review it :) ))

  18. jeff_brister2004 April 28, 2009 @ 2:57 am

Where did you get this TV from? Unless I’m wrong, but it’s the first time you’ve used this one in a video. Usually we see your flatscreen tv or the other old pos tv from your early reviews.

  19. Deefmaster April 28, 2009 @ 5:57 am

I love this stuff. Thanks for sharing James! The laughter is contagious. Mike did an awesome job with the title card too, it totally fits in with those 1970s catalogs and shit.

Jeff: Ya gotta have a tv that is the size of the overlays, so that’s probably why. I’m sure the old tv we’re used to seeing is too small, and the flatscreen is too big. Plus, I seem to remember needing a tv that had screw terminals on the back instead of the 75 ohm coax, but I could be wrong.

  20. Gravemind April 28, 2009 @ 7:35 am

That was a great Video! I would love to play one time with the odyssey. But I probably never will.

  21. TacTic April 28, 2009 @ 9:35 am

    AMURICAH!! FUCK YA!

I would like to see you guys review all these old pong machines you have and just see if there really was any significant different in game play or quality between them all or were they all but repackaging the same ol BULL SHIT!

  22. James April 28, 2009 @ 11:26 am

It’s funny I actually enjoyed the Odyssey. Ironically the game I had the most fun with was just two dashes on a screen.

I was really considering reviewing the Odyssey 2, but the ending with the gun suited it best. I think the video would have gone downhill if I tacked on another console review.

The Odyssey 2 deserves a video of its own, because those games are more like real games and I have plenty of them to work with. It was the first console I ever played too, so I have fond memories with it.

You can see it in the Atari Jaguar part 1 video where I’m talking about Atari’s competitors.

  23. Dapgicc April 28, 2009 @ 12:08 pm

You know James, it would be funny if you would do some DOS games revieuw. Its not a video game Console, But to do it for fun sometime would be cool right?

  24. arctifox April 28, 2009 @ 12:31 pm

Yeah, it would be great to learn more about the Odyssey 2 and it’s games, something like “Double Vision”, it was a wonderful episode!

  25. Papamurphy April 28, 2009 @ 3:07 pm

Great review! To think I thought the Atari 2600 was primitive! I grew up with the NES, so I am behind a generation or so. Anyway great review, and keep up the good work!

  26. Luke April 28, 2009 @ 3:19 pm

After watching the video, I’m actually a little disappointed I never picked up an Odyssey when I had the chance.

Sometimes the simplest games are the best. I still break out my APF tv fun often when I have a large group of friends over. People will actually migrate away from the Wii to play a little competitive pong.

  27. Brian Kenny April 28, 2009 @ 4:35 pm

so does this mean we can expect an Odyssey 2 video soon? hmmmmmmm?

  28. Aubri April 28, 2009 @ 5:44 pm

Okay, this is driving me, my brother, and my best friend NUTS. What’s the fanfare that plays while you’re unwrapping the gun?

  29. GM-Tom April 28, 2009 @ 9:05 pm

This is the most funny video I’ve ever seen.

And Aubri, the fanfare is from Donkey Kong Country 2, when the RARE logo appears

  30. Optics April 28, 2009 @ 9:18 pm

James, you don’t have to record off the screen.. you can buy a capture card for your PC for some 40$ and record anything on your TV straight to your computer via the RCA plugs.

  31. Dr. Scientist April 28, 2009 @ 9:35 pm

    OPTICS:
If he did that, you wouldn’t see the overlays.

  32. Ren Hoek April 28, 2009 @ 10:49 pm

Old TV’s don’t have RCA plugs.

  33. Josh7289 April 28, 2009 @ 10:55 pm

    Yo James,

How much did all this cost you? I can’t imagine getting a good condition Odyssey with everything included was at all cheap…

  34. Danomaticc April 29, 2009 @ 12:40 am

I see them around 50 bucks on ebay frequently.

  35. Martin Ekdahl April 29, 2009 @ 5:22 am

I have to buy a Odyssey just to get the chance to play that excellent tennis game. Btw, where did you find that old TV? It fills me with nostalgia.

  36. heejin April 29, 2009 @ 7:05 am

just noticed that the american map is like a rainbow…its like gay america ; ) If only they knew in the 70′S

  37. Optics April 29, 2009 @ 9:02 am

    Dr. Scientist:

    Oh yeah, DUH! Haha.

  38. thealphanoodle April 29, 2009 @ 6:21 pm

This is probably the most useless comment ever, but it should be “Mike and me playing Odyssey” lmao, but I really loved this one, i didn’t know this existed, it was good! I am looking forward to your future console reviews.

  39. Alyxx April 30, 2009 @ 4:16 am

    Beer – Check
    Good friend – Check
    Odyssey – Check
    Result – Hours of fun

And btw, I would love to see a Odyssey 2 review since it was the first console you had. Would be another great nostalgia trip. I grew up with DOS and SNES. I don’t think you should do DOS games though because, well, you’re obviously not much of a PC gamer. You played Doom and that was it, right? It’s obvious that consoles are your speciality.

  40. Tyron April 30, 2009 @ 9:14 am

Great video James. After watching this, I decided to donate a little something to you via paypal. Keep up the great work!

  41. pfloyd2000 April 30, 2009 @ 9:34 am

Awesome…I used to play this, and PONG back in the day, prior to the wonder that was the Atari 2600. Good times. :-)

Was wondering, and I have not seen this console mentioned in any of your videos yet — the Texas Instruments (TI) 84 console. Do you own one of those? I remember countless hours of “hunting the Wumpus.” Awesome game, and I recall being scared to death by it, too. I think the TI 84 might make for an excellent review…

  42. Awesome April 30, 2009 @ 3:35 pm

    @PFLOYD2000

The TI84 is a calculator, you dumbass.

  43. RaidenPrime April 30, 2009 @ 8:55 pm

Classic, it’s pretty funny but holy crap is it ever loud sometimes. I was playing it with my brothers in bed upstairs and I kept having to adjust my volume. So I ended up getting earphones, :)

    Keep ‘em coming, they’re great!

  44. James May 1, 2009 @ 9:48 am

The Odyssey cost a little over $300 but it was in mint condition and included all the pieces, the original box, the original batteries, everything.

  45. Spiriax May 1, 2009 @ 6:13 pm

James, I’d very much like to know what 8-bit songs you used in this video. I tried to find information about it but couldn’t find any.
Also, I’d be pleased if you wrote what songs you use in the Credits section.

Oh, and thanks for another great video! ^^

  46. occipital May 2, 2009 @ 2:47 am

That dude has the most infectious laughter I’ve ever heard. I think you might have the best job in the whole world: hanging out with your friends and playing (shitty) games.

  47. Josh7289 May 6, 2009 @ 1:49 am

    @James

Ah, nice, that’s actually better than I thought. I can’t imagine a perfect NES going for only $300 (or can I? I really don’t know; I don’t keep up with it, haha)…

  48. mpeglayer3 May 9, 2009 @ 1:41 pm

Hilarious, I’d like to see more videos like this.

  49. The A Team May 11, 2009 @ 10:17 pm

James your vids are awsome!! I would like to see more vids like this bro! Keep up the good work!

  50. Evildead818 May 22, 2009 @ 1:26 pm

  51. RetroGamer3 May 23, 2009 @ 2:18 am

The video was like I was right there with you guys.
My gut hurts from the laughs.
