So random, which is why it’s great. Good to see you all had a good time! I can’t help but wonder what the people in that neighborhood were thinking watching you all be enamored by the Family Matters house. I’m guessing they feared for their lives, wondering what kind of damage this new gang in town were going to do with their hi-tech gadgetry and super sweet dance moves.
With the mix from Cinemmassacre.com and TGWTG.com, I can only imagine it was a non-stop laughfest. Thanks for sharing, James!
honestly, it may be an age thing, but i thought Family Matters was a lame, cookie-cutter sitcom show with the twist being a black family instead of a white one. oh yeah, it had Urkel, the only character more annoying and throttle-worthy than Star Wars’ Jar Jar Binks.
it’s cool that you got to go to Chicago and do your own field trip down memory lane, but i’m honestly suprised James liked Family Matters. as i said beforehand, it must be a small generational thing. i’m 33 myself, not greatly older than Mr. Rolfe, and I detested that show and had stopped watching sitcoms like that by the time it came on in the 1990s. granted, i watched a lot of sitcoms in the 1980s growing up though, but eventually i grew to dislike them. even to this day, i do not watch shows like this, whether new or reruns on TV Land.
James, that was so fucking random and awesome. Nice video bro!
I started laughing so hard when I heard that old piano riff from the beginning of the song! Brought back alot of memories with that one.
Keep the videos coming, whether it be Nerd related or just anything related to you doing cool shit like what I just saw. What you do really piques out interests, obviously.
the locals hardly seemed to notice a bunch of people doing the urkel dance on the street. it must happen pretty often. i never liked the show, but i watched it a lot if that makes sense. when you are a kid and nothing good is on, you just watch whatever shit they give you. good video.
OH MAN! I had to make an account just to comment on this video. That is just too cool for school, James. I would have loved to go to the Family Matters house.
This is like, the greatest thing ever. I loved that show, and it’s great to see someone like yourself as such a big fan.
I haven’t thought about this show in years. I really hated Urkel and many of the other characters yet I couldn’t stop watching it. Even that crossover episode when Urkel flew to some other show on his rocket.
People truly are nerds if they seek out the Family Matters house. I probably would have done the same thing.
haha that was great. you, doug, spoony, benzaie, lindsay, and aussie guy are awesome. don’t forget mati! i’ve watched your TGWTG brawl like 10 times! your joint review with doug comes out tomorrow!
This is awesome. For some reason, the most memorable episode to me is when Steve paratroops up into the house by crashing through the roof. I still remember watching that one years ago and thinking “Why did he go all the way through the roof?”
WOW! COOL Trip over there! Although I didn’t watched much of the Family Matters show before (not much of a fan of it so I’m pretty much couldn’t relate) but I do remember Perfect Strangers, heheh!
But really, its cool to see you with the TGWTG team re-living some good old stuffs, I really like that. Really cool! =)
It was nice to see you with all the other guys. It seemed, to me anyway, that you brushed off that the brawl even happend. No posts or mentions of it at all. It’s good to see that you actually had SOMETHING with everybody on this site.
Well this is awesome. The show is so damn corny but I LOVED it at the time. Awesome to see you guys together, also ths is the first of the crossover thing to show itself on this site so yay!
Yeah I found it weird too that you didn’t mention anything about the TGWTG crossover. There’s even an interview with James and other interesting nerd stuff.
Anyway, I can see you had a great time! Awesome!
This is wonderful to see for a couple of reasons. First because it’s just cool on its own. Second because, like other people’ve said, it has seemed like you’ve stayed away from bringing up anything about the TGWTG Brawl (which was absolutely wonderful); I was worried that maybe somehow it left a bad taste in your mouth….
So yeah, hopefully this shows that you actually had a good time in Chi-town, etc.
i actually met the woman who played the grandma from family matters. i live in the bronx, ny and so happened to walk by a nail salon and just saw her coming out.. she was so nice and sweet. i love family matters
Did you guys just happen to take a vacation all at the same time or do NC and Spoony live over there? What the deal with that?
I saw this video heading and immediately 3 words came to mind:
“GOTTA… SEE… THIS!!!!!”
The video literally could NOT load fast enough.
How did you get all those Urkel clips on a moment’s notice? Do you own like a total season boxset of tapes or something? It would have taken me months of Nick at Nite recordings to put this video together, so I can’t help but be curious about this.
And here is where I needed to make an account and let through some of my nerdiness since I was also a fan of Family Matters. In the video, you mentioned that Family Matters and Perfect Strangers at one point had a crossover or something. The fact is that Family Matters is actually a loose spin-off of Perfect Strangers. The one character that connected the two shows was Harriet Winslow, who was the elevator operator on Perfect Strangers and the mother of the household on Family Matters. She even eventually lost that job in an episode of Family Matters due to them installing a self operated elevator, but then she gets her confidence up and goes back to demand another job from the same employer. Damn, why do I remember all this useless information? Now if only they had shown the Owens house from Mr. Belvedere…
Go James, it’s your birthday! Well..not yet it ain’t, but go anyway! Go James, it’s your birthday! It’s your birthday! It’s your birthday! Hehehehe *snort snort*
You have officially proven your alpha nerd status.
Uh, interesting I guess, though I don’t quite get the point in making a huge video for a little thing. Like your Rocky one I got because you were scouting out lots of locations. Here it was kinda.. house.. meh.
hmm…. wouldnt be bad if Family Matters didnt SUCK! i hated that show- whenever it came on tv, i knew i was done watching tv for the day. steve urkel was annopying, i hated those lousy ‘morals’ that they crammed down your throat at the end of every episode with that asinine music ).
“you ever heard ’sticks and stones will break my bones but words will neevr hurt me’? well, its wrong…. words do hurt, steve, and i am sorry”
GAAAAAAAH! in any case, i do remember visiting san fransisco and seeing the house from full house. that was pretty neat, even though i hated that show almost as much as family matters (though it wasnt on any of the channels i watched all the time, so it didnt ruin anything for me)
James, I´ve always admired how you can gather people around your ideas and projects, that´s real leadership man, you´re not a nerd but a very popular guy!
I really admire you.
Kudos on the review of the Urkel´s house!
anyone remember the part where steve and laura went to Cincinnati and stayed at the motel and steve just came out of the shower saying “NOOO!!!” and then thunder came down? that was funny.
I would love to do this kind of stuff visit famous movie and television locations etc. Unfortunately i don’t live in the States . High on my list are the back to the future locations and the Goonies locations.
If you ever end up in Cleveland, you should check out the house from “A Christmas Story”. It’s been turned into a museum for the movie. I’ve been wanting to go to it for a while now, but I find very little reason other than that to go to Cleveland.
Awesome vid, it was cool to see The Nerd and The Critic just hangin’ around like normal dudes. That house is truly a monument to our collective pop-culture identity and it’s nice to see the dorks remembering. So we don’t have to. Couldn’t resist.
You know, as funny as it is, being that you guys going to the Family Matters house and all, but I can’t help but think of this YouTube poop I once saw called “Waldo is Pregnant”.
P.S. Once again, all of us here at TGWTG.com will miss you, ThatAussieGuy, Good luck and godspeed!
P.S.S. FamiimaF
MaM (Sorry, that was a quote from the YTP, I couldn’t resist)
Haha that’s awesome to see James and Doug, my two favorite internet celebrities, just hanging out. Does Doug like the show? If he hated Full House so much, then I don’t see any reason to like Family Matters lol. But yes James, you are a true nerd.
And to agree with other posters here, yes, Lindsay is very cute.
Hi James,
First time I write here.
Well, my english terrible… It’s such a discipline I’ve done in high school.
About 12 years ago… Argh.
In Brazil we like your videos. Actually, we love then.
You are a celebrity here.
It’s very funny. I’ve played a lot of this games when I was just a kid (I’m 30).
Congratulations, man.
Keep on fucking!
Nerdy goodness with a cherry on top. It’s kinda refreshing to see you and Doug and Spoony and Lindsey and all those others just hanging out and goofing off rather than doing your usual “acting” thing. Cool video, I’m glad I decided to stop by tonight.
This was one of those TGIF shows that regardless of whether you liked it or not, you found yourself watching it. I don’t remember ever laughing at it, but if you didn’t watch it, you had NOTHING talk about the next Monday at school. You’d be in the dark while everybody else was talking about it. They had us by the balls.
You guys should have also gone to the Home Alone house while you were in the area. It’s in Winnetka, which is right outside of Chicago…and has the exact same address as in the movies, so it’s pretty easy to find.
I was having a dream where something terrible had just happened, but the important thing is that James was a true friend to me by patting me on the back, nodding his head with a serious wince, then with an encouraging look in his eyes, telling me I’d be back on my feet in no time while nodding his head casually to a horribly cliche sitcom opening theme.
didn’t watch this one too much.i DO recall the urkle dance, though.loved that urkle was supposed to be a once shot deal and jaleel (a kid at the time) created this character himself.pretty inventive i think. oh, and love the t-shirt that guy had: gary gygax changed my life…haha!
Cinemassacre is awesome, but if you want a game review (not really angry) check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zVi4ML6wtw james and doug inspired me to make a vid of my own!
Steve Urkel really was a annoying little bastard, wasn’t he? I was a “Family ties” guy and never fell for either “Full house” or “Family matters”. Full house actually gave me the creeps to an extent that it became a little bit satisfying to watch it, just like I never can take my eyes away from disgusting commercials with irritating actors. So I watched it even if I hated it. But “Family matters”? No! I just couldn’t stand Steve Urkel. I wanted to beat that little squirrel the Hell up every time I saw the show on TV. He made me clench my fists in rage and furious anger. But anyway, great episode as always James.
Maybe the video is still in the works, but James could have also checked out the Home Alone house – which is about a 30 min drive north of the city.. as well as Cameron’s pad in Ferris Buehler’s Day Off. I checked out both myself.. really cool stuff.
I would hate to live there…because I would not like to look out the window and find a group of weirdos taking pictures and doing a weird dance in front of a camera in my yard. Lol, I would call the cops! DAMN KIDS! GET OFF MY LAWN!
But none the less, that must have been a fun day.
so i watched this video yesterday and thought it was pretty funny. then today i saw it on tvsquad.com and they totally don’t even give you guys credit or even mention where they got the video from. douche move by them.
In addition, this event reminds me of when my Dad and I visited Tempe, AZ and went to the Circle K that Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure was filmed in front of.
Wait a minute!!.. Your last image posted has you with the Ecto-1, and now this one comes, which features Carl Winslow, who was in GHOSTBUSTERS 2 !!! Cooincidence??!?!?! Well, it slightly blew my mind anyway..
Damn it, James. You were in my city of Chicago and did not inform me before you came here? It would have kicked ass if I could have met you. Now I’m gonna have to wait to somehow run into you randomly.
I consider myself fairly desensitized to the ignorance and stupidity of people on the Internet, but when I saw these people did I ws quite honestly at a loss.
Not one, but TWO SEPERATE SITES jacked your video and proceeded to write about how an, and I quote, “Obsessive Group Of Family Matters Fans Went t Chicago For The Sole Propose Of Finding The House From The Show” In fact it almost looks like one of them stole the idea from the other, which is even sadder.
Neither of these so called ‘Journalists’ did any research before posting their inane articles and have since been lambasted by angry fans of the Internet Celebrities involved in the “Brawl”. If anyone wants to read the articles for themselves, here’s the links to them.
I’d like to see James’ rebuttal to these two jokers, but I know he has better things to do than waste time pointing out the stupidity of two unknown bloggers. So if any of you, my dear fellow Cinemassacre fans, would like to add your displeasure to the comments arely made to these morons, I say go for it.
Anyone remember Laura’s little sister who just kind of disappeared after a few seasons? Yeah, turns out she did porn.
321,123 What the heck is bothering me.
Nowhere, yeah, I remember Judy Winslow, she got Brother Chucked (as in Chuck Cunningham) in favor of Urkel. She went into porn under the name Crave, did some vids from around 2000-2002, but she’s out of it now, since she and her husband (some production designer) had their first son back in May of this year.
WJJR92, I guess you didn’t recognize that chick that went with them as the Nostalgia Chick.
Also, instead of the Urkel dance, you could’ve danced like Jaleel White did in those Six Flags commercials to the Venga Boys, James.
Thats awesome Spoony was there that was a real surprise. Mr. James Rolfe I’m kind of surpised to see him in one of your vids. Thats pretty cool seeing him here too.
James, you are most definitely a nerd. Thanks for sharing. =)
Cheers for posting this.
Loved the dancemoves
lol awesome James!
Nothing like a bunch of nerds getting together spending WAY too much time discussing and arguing about a TV sitcom from the 90’s.
Also, poor Jaleel White, people are probably STILL calling him Urkel to this day.
So random, which is why it’s great. Good to see you all had a good time! I can’t help but wonder what the people in that neighborhood were thinking watching you all be enamored by the Family Matters house. It’s not too surprising that he liked Family Matters, considering his “Officer Carl Winslow” reference in the Die Hard AVGN review.
I’m glad the Bruce Lee transformation got mentioned as that’s one of the first things I always mention to others when reflecting back on the show.
Urkel Dance FTW!
This extra stuff makes watching the TGWTG videos more
worthwhile, just seeing the crew doing normal stuff!
Tourism FTW
I wonder where you’ll go next….
I live about a 20min or so from there. If i would have known i definitely would have came down to say hi.
[...] Read the original post: A Trip to the Family Matters House [...]
Excellent video.
Too bad there isn’t an Al Bundy house somewhere. I’d love to walk through that.
P.S. Lindsay Ellis is hot.
Perfect Strangers was one of my favorite shows!
OH MAN! I had to make an account just to comment on this video. That is just too cool for school, James. I would have loved to go to the Family Matters house.
This is like, the greatest thing ever. I loved that show, and it’s great to see someone like yourself as such a big fan.
This was a great video, but the inclusion of Noah Antwiler makes it unwatchable.
I haven’t thought about this show in years. I really hated Urkel and many of the other characters yet I couldn’t stop watching it. Even that crossover episode when Urkel flew to some other show on his rocket.

That’s roughly 10 blocks from where I was on Sunday.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_bB1uk8yPmk4/Si3K4RRpU0I/AAAAAAAAIs4/rAq5vzvvjLw/s800/urkel_house.jpg
It doesn’t look like the Winslows live there anymore though.

I thought that was you dancing with Spoony in an opening. Good stuff.
Christ. I totally had The Urkle Dance blocked from my memory.
You guys have way to much fun! Great video man.
I’ve been to the Full House house in San Fransisco. Real nice area and you get that amazing view of the city from the park.
WOW! COOL Trip over there! Although I didn’t watched much of the Family Matters show before (not much of a fan of it so I’m pretty much couldn’t relate) but I do remember Perfect Strangers, heheh!

Hey, it’s the TGwtG crew. Didn’t you just tell them you found the Mike Myers house?

Ah, James, the field trips you guys go on. What’s next, making a video about playing with old Ninja Turtle action fig–no, wait, you did that!
the coolest gaggle of geeks i’ve ever seen.
i seen some of this on ben’s 2 hrs bts of the brawl on dougs site , it’s good to see the rest of the winslow house trip

Kudos on the review of the Urkel´s house!
Wow, i should have been there XD
That was a bit more than I expected, but “interesting” nonetheless. I was surprised there was a video instead of a pic or something lesser.
To all those who say “Urkel’s voice was annoying”:
Try watching The Nanny.
I’ll take Jaleel over Fran anyday.
thats awesome you got to check the place out
that’s so awesome. maybe someday when i go to chicago i’ll go see that house.
that’s so cool, i gotta stop by there when go to chicago.

I would hate to live there…because I would not like to look out the window and find a group of weirdos taking pictures and doing a weird dance in front of a camera in my yard. Lol, I would call the cops! DAMN KIDS! GET OFF MY LAWN!
But none the less, that must have been a fun day.
Commenting on epic video.
so i watched this video yesterday and thought it was pretty funny. then today i saw it on tvsquad.com and they totally don’t even give you guys credit or even mention where they got the video from. douche move by them.
I think that park where the Bruce Lee bit was held was also used on Married With Children, a show that is also set in Chicago.
In addition, this event reminds me of when my Dad and I visited Tempe, AZ and went to the Circle K that Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure was filmed in front of.
Ohh my, too much nerdness it was hard to stomach. Definitely hit the bars up before doing something like this again to make it less painful :-p
did anyone mention that the little sister went on to do porn?
and
How the hell did you guys get a girl to go along with you? Jedi mind tricks?????

Haha! The picture with the car going by almost made me spit my beer on my computer! funny shit James.
Also, instead of the Urkel dance, you could’ve danced like Jaleel White did in those Six Flags commercials to the Venga Boys, James.
nice I see SpoonyOne, Critic and a lot of famous video reviewers, it’s cool seeing you all together.
Thats awesome Spoony was there that was a real surprise. Mr. James Rolfe I’m kind of surpised to see him in one of your vids. Thats pretty cool seeing him here too.
P.S.: How do I get an invitation to the next road trip with this illustrious entourage?
I used to live right by there and never realized my proximity to glory! What a wasted bragging opportunity.
Lol, “Did I Do That” =w=
Seeing you and the Spoony One together made me pee my pants with happiness.
That entire thing looked like it was a blast. another awesome clip!
Thanks, james.
You just made my night
