nice vid there but i have a request will you do a critters review please

  2. Macphisto June 22, 2009 @ 1:31 pm

Yeah. Isn’t enough that they cant imagine new stories for films, hence bad remakes, the industry cant even come up with decent titles. Bullshit indeed.

  3. HeLLraz3r23 June 22, 2009 @ 1:32 pm

    lol man nice

  6. Tangent June 22, 2009 @ 1:37 pm

Maybe you should post a link to the Chronologically Confused video that’s hidden in with the AVGN videos on to YouTube, and wherever else you post your B.S videos, or make mention of it for people who want to hear a little more B.S on this subject.

If you’ve seen Chronologically Confused, this just seems like a condensed version of it… but you do bring up a valid point that people are doing that shit still.

  7. Kini June 22, 2009 @ 1:41 pm

    so true!

  8. toiletfarm June 22, 2009 @ 1:45 pm

This is why I hate movies. Everyone’s out of ideas. They put so much emphasis on graphics and special effects it takes away from the movie. When was the last time you saw a comedy where every joke in it wasn’t a sexual joke? It’s overdone. It’s just like modern games. They put so much into the graphics and shaking the screen around that no epileptic person couuld possibly play them. You had mentioned that video games started going downhill after the Super Nintendo; well, movies did so at the same time.

  9. Iserlohn June 22, 2009 @ 1:52 pm

So true many times. But one thing is interesting:
The poster you showed of Fast&Furious was the German one. In Germany the movie officially is called “Fast&Furious: Altes Modell, Originalteile”, which roughly translates to “Fast&Furious: Old Model, Original Parts” which subverts it. But that is just Off Topic.

  10. wickedjordan June 22, 2009 @ 1:53 pm

Can’t agree more: what I hate is they tend to start with the simplest possible title, but then they go and fuck it up.

  11. Techno June 22, 2009 @ 1:54 pm

Haha, so true. I love these they’re nice and short but get the point across and they’re always hilarious.

  12. Regent Rodenberger June 22, 2009 @ 1:55 pm

Hey Toiletfarm. I have to say, I disagree. There are many, many good quality and original movies even nowadays. You just might see the wrong ones. Now I won’t recommend you any, since each one has their own taste, but it should be obvious that “Fast & Furious 4″ cannot be a good movie.

PS: In my opinion, 80% of the movies in the eighties sucked, which is neither a better nor a worse rate than now.

  13. moep0r June 22, 2009 @ 2:09 pm

Great, as always. I love that you used the German poster of Fast & Furious :D

  14. Pooter Fonda June 22, 2009 @ 2:14 pm

I don’t think remakes should be allowed to use the exact name as the movie it’s remaking. There Should be something in the title to distinguish it from the original.

  15. Luk_Edge June 22, 2009 @ 2:22 pm

In Brazil, the first movie is called Velozes e Furiosos, in english that would be… Fast and Furious. So they just named the fourth movie Velozes e Furiosos 4 (Fast and Furious 4).

That reminds me of those Bruce Lee movies (I think) you mentioned in a past video.

  17. metalcommand June 22, 2009 @ 2:24 pm

Just like the remake of Halloween from Rob Zombie: no one in the future will know what the first one is by the look on the title!

  18. somecanadianguy June 22, 2009 @ 2:30 pm

Up until about a couple of months ago, it was called “Final Destination: Death Trip” (or “Death Trip 3D, since it’s gonna be 3D) I noticed that they had changed the title at the last minute to “The Final Destination” and I died a little on the inside. I’m actually a big fan of that series, I even kinda liked the third one, and I want to see the new one, but come on, “The Final Destination?” Really? The good thing is, they got David R. Ellis back, who directed second one as well as Snakes on a Plane, Cellular and guess what else, Homeward Bound II! I’ve liked most of his movies so far, so this one should be good. My only complaint is that it’s in 3D, which gives me an idea for your next bullshit video. 3D movies!! Let’s face it, 3D is just a gimmick designed by the studios to prevent piracy.

  19. TREV592 June 22, 2009 @ 2:36 pm

Nice one james LMAO huge fan!

  20. moGGimus June 22, 2009 @ 2:45 pm

    I concur James.

  21. toiletfarm June 22, 2009 @ 2:46 pm

Regent, I’m not saying all movies suck although it’s kinda implied in my statement. I liked movies like 88 Minutes and We Own the Night, but I’m more of a comedy person and the crap that gets put out these days is lacking in my opinion. My wife always hounds me to watch movies so suggest away.

  22. droidguy1119 June 22, 2009 @ 2:46 pm

You should have gone a little further into the Rambo thing. The series has the worst series of titles ever.

    First Blood (1982)
Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
    Rambo III (1988)
    Rambo (2008)

  23. L-Guy7 June 22, 2009 @ 2:54 pm

It’s interesting that you used the French poster of “2 Fast 2 Furious”. The translated subtitle is “No rules, no limits”. I live in Luxembourg, so I can speak French as well as English and German.

PS: I watched the movie “Fast & Furious” a few months ago and I was like “what?” when I saw the title. I thought it was a remix of the first movie.

They really ran out of ideas.

I know it’s off-topic, I just wanted to point that out.

    @ Iserlohn:
    You’re right.

  24. amedeus8 June 22, 2009 @ 3:14 pm

I’m pretty sure that Final Destination is just, hey, dying, whatever. So they stuck “The” on the beginning to insinuate that it’s the last movie. THE FINAL Final Destination. It really doesn’t make sense if you think about it, but at least it nearly does. Fast & Furious and Stallone movies will always baffle me.

  25. qjt June 22, 2009 @ 3:21 pm

    Couldn’t agree more.

  26. sconethief June 22, 2009 @ 3:29 pm

yes, I do know whats bullshit!

  27. Steini June 22, 2009 @ 3:34 pm

It’s also increasingly more common that movie titles are simplified for international markets. Live Free Or Die Hard is known as Die Hard 4.0 internationally and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is simply known as Night at the Museum 2.

Foreign movies often get differnet titles in the US. Danny the Dog was changed to Unleashed and Léon was changed to The Professional.

  28. chumbawamba June 22, 2009 @ 3:34 pm

You were right in your Chronologically Confused video that the Rocky movies (until VI) had the perfect titles. All roman numerals, no subtitles. But Hollywood, for some reason, wants to move away from this. That’s why you don’t even get numbers in the titles, just a different subtitle, or even another title altogether.

The last sequel that was just “Title + #” I can recall that was actually a hit was Spider-Man 3. But then you have the sequel to “Batman Begins” is “The Dark Knight”. The prequel to “The Da Vinci Code” is “Angels & Demons”. The 11th Star Trek movie is “Star Trek”. What do you call the sequel to that, “Star Trek II”?

You have the sequels to “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” are “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”. Unless you do some research, you’ll have no idea what order they go in. Same thing with the Harry Potter movies and The Lord of the Rings. I know those last two are based on books, but the Pirates movies are based on a theme park ride, so they have no excuse.

The new “Night at the Museum” movie is “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”. How hard would it be to put a “2″ in there? What if they make a part three? And don’t get me started on “Fast & Furious”; you said everything there pretty much is to say. Same thing with a sequel to “Terminator Salvation”. Unless it’s “Terminator Salvation 2″, how will you know what order they go in. And even then, numbers lie. In the Star Wars films, “Episode IV” is the first movie, and “Episode I” is part four.

  29. klipzig June 22, 2009 @ 3:48 pm

This episode made me want to re-watch your Chronologically Confused video. Great video as always James.

The first time this subject hit me in a bad way was when I saw the poster for Fast & Furious. I looked at the poster and saw the same characters from the first movie and I honestly thought they were just going to show the first movie again. I didn’t realize until after it was gone from the theaters that it was a sequel. Oh well.

  30. Lunar52 June 22, 2009 @ 4:06 pm

I totally agree with you, James. You make such kick ass videos.

  31. DaLimited June 22, 2009 @ 4:12 pm

James just cuts the bullshit and tells the truth! :D

  32. Guil June 22, 2009 @ 4:28 pm

According to wikipedia, there would actually be a Fast & Furious 5 or no matter how they gonna call it.

Not mentioning that there also was a 1939 movie called Fast & Furious… but who would have seen that…

  33. Onion June 22, 2009 @ 4:33 pm

I think it’s because they sell more tickets if they name the (X th) sequel a lot like the first movie. People liked the first movie and liked the sequels less, so in order to break the trend they have in the sequels they name the new sequel a lot like the first movie, as if to say they go back to the original movie and make a new first sequel. The first movie is in most cases the best movie, so if they remind you of that movie with the tittle of the new sequel instead of the previous sequel they will attract more people. Because you then think, this movie isn’t going to be like the last sequel but more like the original movie.

  34. Bueller_007 June 22, 2009 @ 4:59 pm

“The Fast & The 4rious” is fucking gold.

  35. dreemernj June 22, 2009 @ 5:14 pm

“The Fast & The 4rious” had me rolling on the goddamn floor.

  36. Jehauri June 22, 2009 @ 6:20 pm

For some reason, this reminds me of the Dark Forces series of video games. It goes:

    Dark Forces
    Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith (expansion pack)
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (what happened to Dark Forces? It’s Dark Forces 3!)
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (Now what happened to the II? Now it’s just Jedi Knight again.)

Granted, it’s a lot easier to tell what order they go in based on graphics alone, but it’s still needlessly confusing. It’s like having Star Trek, Star Trek II, and then Star Trek III is called “Star Trek II 2″.

  37. doomedhuh June 22, 2009 @ 6:36 pm

The reason movie titles are like that is ’cause they want to do a sequel since it has huge pre existing brand awareness but they dont want the baggage of you have to see 9 movies to see this. they want every one to be like if it was the first one.

  38. bondfish June 22, 2009 @ 6:40 pm

i agree totaly but The Final Destination makes sense if you think about it

Final Destination first then the rest

the “The” Final Destination meaning that its the last one saying okay now its “The” final destination of these people or what ever you get my point

  39. bondfish June 22, 2009 @ 6:44 pm

its also the Friday The 13th remake and Halloween

but did you know that they are making a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie that i think is a remake or it could be a new one im not sure

  40. bondfish June 22, 2009 @ 6:46 pm

oh and another Halloween 2 remake good job guys i mean when they remake a movie it should be called

Halloween 2 The Remake of Halloween 2

  41. Jigglysaint June 22, 2009 @ 6:49 pm

They should have just called it “Final Destination: Last Stop” or somthing. In fact if you are going to go so far as to stop numbering your sequals, at least come up with a witty subtitle or somthing.

  42. mrcupti June 22, 2009 @ 6:53 pm

You got a very solid point, it is gettin confusing as fuck and doesnt make sense at all. you nailed it with fast and furious man. also check me out for my retro reviews on youtube!!!http://www.youtube.com/user/MRCupti

  43. Moshtank June 22, 2009 @ 7:10 pm

    I agree
but perhaps “The” final destination is, THE final destination
but if they make another one then that really is buuuuuuuuuuullshiit!
    great video james

  44. UCF00v June 22, 2009 @ 7:11 pm

This is a perfect example of why I basically have turned my back on the whole traditional hollywood filmmaking world.

The reason they do stuff like that is because there is ZERO-inspiration in the film industry these days. The cold hard truth is that no one even makes movies anymore. They’re all just great big marketing schemes designed to fool as many people as possible into handing over their 10.50. They know that they’re more likely to do that when they simply COPY the title of an earlier successful movie, so they name it that (as opposed to making some attempt at originality). That’s all there is to it.

That’s why I don’t even watch movies anymore. Even if I really really THINK I want to see something, I don’t give my 10.50 to anybody. As far as I’m concerned the traditional definitions and ideas of what “filmmaking” is has completely lost all credibility. The only real filmmakers that exist these days are those that use their skills for their own private film projects, like James’ reviews and personal projects. That’s the reason why I give a crap about this site. Because that’s the only real “filmmaking” there is anymore.

  45. redskull1944 June 22, 2009 @ 7:42 pm

very true, lets hope this crap doesn’t leak into television, with spin offs like DR House, Welcome to the Dollhouse (badass movie btw), Viva Las Vegas, CSI Montreal, King of Jamaica Queens etc.

  46. Stanley2 June 22, 2009 @ 7:47 pm

on the subject of stallone movies, you know he announced theres gonna be a rambo 5?

  47. Mariano June 22, 2009 @ 7:52 pm

You need to see this, it’s hilarious:
    http://black20.com/black20-trailer-park/stallone-sequels

  48. Justin June 22, 2009 @ 8:36 pm

Yeah I’m not sure I agree entirely with the way they number sequels. I think if it’s a movie where you need to have seen the ones before it, then it should be numbered, but even saying that is kind of tricky. You need to see Rocky 1 in order to enjoy Rocky 2, but you only need to see First Blood to understand the beginning of Rambo: First Blood Part 2. So the question there is where do you draw that line?

I believe that for sequals that don’t really continue on with the story from the first movie but take place in the same universe should only have the title of the first movie in their name followed by a subtitle. Wow that was a long sentence, but anyways for example: Ernest goes to Camp, and then Ernest goes to Africa. Ok, maybe not the best example but I’m mostly outta ideas now. Maybe something like all the Pirates of the Carribean movies. Pirates: Black Pearl for one sequal instead of Pirates 2.

The number system, if movie number 2 wasn’t any good then if most people are like me, when number 3 comes out they say “Number 2 sucked so I’m not going to go see number 3!”. Or if the movie gets up to 4, like with the saw series, they’ll say “I’ve never seen any of the Saw movies so I won’t know what’s going on in this movie”. I know I’ve said that before.

Ultimately though we must realize that movie sequels generally suck and they suck hard. The first movies are usually the best. That’s when you’re introduced to everything and everyone. Movies, you’re only supposed to know all the character and events for that hour or two the movie lasts, and then you’re never gonna see them again. Once numerous sequels come out the movie starts to seem like a tv show. It’s like “Hey, same crew of people, less important story. Thanks for the movie, hope to visit you guys next summer!”

  49. ZevSenesca June 22, 2009 @ 9:28 pm

Why the fuck doesn’t anyone number sequels anymore?

I can understand why “Rocky Balboa” wasn’t called “Rocky VI”, since it replaces Rocky V, but if it’s supposed to be the last in the series, it should have been called “Rocky: The Final Fight”.

Even Hollywood does number the sequels to a movie, they’ll only number as far as the third movie (like the “Terminator” and “Alien” series, for example). I seriously think Hollywood hates the number 4. And that’s bullshit.

  50. buckfutter June 22, 2009 @ 10:04 pm

Ironically they are making a sequel to cliff hanger
    *facepalms*

  51. BlueGemini June 22, 2009 @ 10:37 pm

I didn’t know that there will be a new Final Destination movie and its a remake of the first? And they title it as “The Final Destination”??? Seriously? =/

    Hahaha! Guess I must agree… That’s Bullshit! >=D

  52. SKITTY8NOPITTY June 22, 2009 @ 10:40 pm

LOVE THE VIDEO AND YOUR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT,NO ONE PUTS TITLES IN THE RIGHT SEQUENCE GOMO GOMO NOOOOOOOOOO PISTOL

  53. SmaMan June 22, 2009 @ 10:42 pm

Another one that confused the hell out of me was “Hulk” and the new “The Incredible Hulk”

I guess there it actually makes sense, because the Incredible one was actually kind of better, but it’s still bullshit.

I agree with the Star Trek thing too. Granted, that was a prequel, but they could’ve at least called it Star Trek Zero or Star Trek: The Beginning. Now when people start talking about Star Trek, who knows if they’re talking about the TV series, the first movie, or the recent movie?! That’s bullshit!

  54. Tacoma Yakko June 22, 2009 @ 10:44 pm

Your next video in this series should just be called ‘That’s Bullshit.’ Then the one following could be ‘You Know What’s Bullshit (Episode 13).’

It would make a lot of sense!

  55. KojirohSakaki June 22, 2009 @ 11:51 pm

Some countries in Asia actually changes the original title to numbers. Die Hard with a vengeance/Live free or Die Hard was called Die Hard 3/Die Hard 4 in South Korea.

But for some reason, Terminator Salvation was changed to Terminator: the beginnig of Future war in Korea. but Japan named it simply Terminator 4.

So am I living in a world with less BS than America? I highly doubt it.

Was that the german dvd cover? because there stood neues model original teile. in every fucking commercial they call it like this and it fucking annoys me because it is the shittiest title in the history of mankind.
In english it would be fast and furious new model original parts. it´s like they replaced 4 with this shitty sentence. it doesnt even make any sence.

  58. lolo June 23, 2009 @ 4:03 am

nobody can come up with any new idea; thus nobody can come up with any new titles for these rehashed ideas. hollywood is dead.

have you heard about the prequeal to the matrix franchize? now thats bullshit.

  59. Deefmaster June 23, 2009 @ 4:17 am

I’m going to be the jerk who criticizes. I gotta admit, this one was my least favorite. Obviously this is new but I feel like I’ve seen this before; this subject has already been discussed a few times in some form or another. Also, without the illustrations, it just doesn’t feel like a bullshit episode. Finally, the anger just wasn’t at a level I was hoping for, which is a huge part of what make these so funny. It’s fun when you’re not so calm and reasonable when explaining the rant.

That said, I’m very grateful you’re still pumping these out for our enjoyment, so I feel like a petty ass for complaining, but I was thinking it so might as well be honest.

  60. elcalvo June 23, 2009 @ 4:31 am

he is getting more angry than the AVGN himself

  61. Erin June 23, 2009 @ 5:24 am

I just have to LOL. Me and my friend were actually just going on about this exact thing when we heard about the new final destination movie.

The funny thing was that I ended up saying “This is just bullshit!” and apparently I am not the only one who thinks so. :)

  62. ZEON June 23, 2009 @ 5:36 am

    Yes,the true bullshit

  63. MrLemon June 23, 2009 @ 8:40 am

I remember seeing this poster at the station:
“Fast&Furious – neues Modell, Originalteile” (I live in Germany, TL: “new Model, original parts”)
And I went past and thought to myself: “What the heck is that supposed to mean???”
I mean, it sounds like they take shots from the first Movie, rearrange them, maybe add a few new scenes, delete some other.
That would be a “new movie, original parts”
I really couldn’t make sense of that poster…

They should do ist like Final Fantasy (in Japan at least)
Number all the Sequels in Roman Numbers, when they have nothing in Common, then add an arabic Number if it is a sequel or something (FFX and FFX-2)
Okay, that is also kind of fucked up, but hey, IT’S UNDERSTANDABLE!

  64. nowhere June 23, 2009 @ 9:09 am

Look at the Friday the 13th series.

    Friday the 13th

    Friday the 13th Part II

    Friday the 13th 3-D

Friday the 13th:The Final Chapter(To be fair it was supposed to be the last movie with Jason)

Friday the 13th Part V:A New Beginning(Setup for Tommy to take the mask over)

Friday the 13th Part 6:Jason Lives(Fans hated no jason in pt 5 even with a body count of 22 and lots of t&a)

Friday the 13th:The New Blood(Supposed to be Freddy vs Jason but new line and paramount weren’t “in bed together” on it during the writer’s strike.

Friday the 13th Part VIII:Jason takes Manhattan(Vancouver, even rides the Skyway)

Jason goes to Hell:The Final Friday(Due to legal reasons there were not supposed to be any more friday the 13th movies as paramount owned the rights to the title but not the characters.)

    Jason X

    Freddy vs Jason

Friday the 13th(New Line and Paramount produced the movie together so the title Friday the 13th and the character of Jason could be used in the same film.)

or What if someone decides to watch Halloween III so they would understand Halloween IV even though they have nothing to do with each other.

  65. Ender June 23, 2009 @ 9:24 am

*sigh* The same bullshit tide is unfortunately hitting game bussines, as a while ago I’ve been reading aobut Alien Vs Predator game sequel, and the whole thing looks very appealing except for one thing, it’s called flat out “Aliens Versus Predator”. The producer says it’s the current “fashion” and that they are going to stick with it. Pretty bulshitty…

  66. Barry the Nomad June 23, 2009 @ 9:34 am

The ONLY film series doing the right thing is Spider-Man.

    Spider-Man
    Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2.5 (the opening was even altered)
    Spider-Man 3
    Spider-Man 4

X-Men took a dive into the shitter with naming. I can’t for the life of me decide WHAT to call the sequal:

    X-Men
    X2, X2: X-Men United, X-Men 2: X-Men United, X-Men 2
    X-Men: The Last Stand
    X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I’d prefer: X-Men, X-Men: United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Wolverine. Sure there are no numbers, but it follows that comic book sensibility of comic name and story name.

Hulk is an odd beast as well. We have HULK and then the quasi-sequel The Incredible HULK.

  67. Optics June 23, 2009 @ 10:40 am

  68. Skeletor June 23, 2009 @ 11:11 am

great Bullshit story. I also hate when they do this with sequels. They must feel its embarrassing too do a 4th movie in a series, so they need to refresh the series and make it look like its a movie on its on. And that’s just bullshit.

  69. Martin Ekdahl June 23, 2009 @ 11:12 am

Thaaaats bullshit! Stupid sequels are anyway almost always crappier than the originals, so they don’t only confuse the audience, they also make the audience believe that the original was crap..

How about the “Punch-Out!!” series of video games?

    “Punch-Out!!” (arcade-1984)
    “Super Punch-Out!!” (arcade-1985)
    “Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!” (NES-1987)
    “Punch-Out!!” (NES-1990/alternate version of “Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!)
    “Super Punch-Out!!” (SNES-1994)
    “Punch-Out!!” (Wii-2009)

Although it’s not as big of a deal since there is no particular order one must play them in, it’s still pretty confusing.

  75. Brian June 23, 2009 @ 1:51 pm

Man James All of your Bullshit videos are 100% true! I think the next video should be about how EVERY SINGLE movie nowadays, even if it’s horrible, has a damn sequel!

  76. Rodrigo (Duvisa) June 23, 2009 @ 2:16 pm

Hi James, if you got time, check it out your email, my message has the subject Rodrigo from Brazil, thanks man.

  77. wombatwacker June 23, 2009 @ 2:42 pm

Right on James, this shit is so true and really pisses me off too. But on the chronologically confused topic

Whats up with gta? There’s gta up till 3, then vice city then san andreas but then they call the next one gta4? So what will the next one be gta 5 or will they abandon numbering them for a while.
Unless because gta 3 was in 3d it is a new series, therefore vice city=2, san andreas=3 , and then it would make sense for the next to be called 4.

I’d argue that the punchout series is okay as they are more updates of the game than sequels.

  78. horrorfanboy June 23, 2009 @ 2:44 pm

Awesome review, James. Your B.S. videos keep getting better. I like the Final Destination films, but this new title is a little… dumb I agree. I guess it’s indicating that it’s the Final film in the series. Unless it’s successful, there will be another film.
Keep making your B.S. Videos. You Rule, James!

  79. Ninesvnsicks June 23, 2009 @ 2:51 pm

I agree they really need to stop calling them the same thing I find myself messing up movie titles because of it. It is extremely annoying. Keep up the great videos :)

  80. Ithilgore June 23, 2009 @ 4:20 pm

    First Blood
    Rambo: First Blood Part 2
    Rambo 3
    Rambo

That’s still the worst for retarded sequel names. Where they even paying attention?

I don’t know what their problem is with numbers these days, they seem detirmined to avoid “_____ 2″, instead having a cheesy subtitle like “_____: Evolution” or “_____: Origins”.

  81. SmaMan June 23, 2009 @ 4:45 pm

    @Wombatwacker
I think they mainly just numbered the GTA series at the wrong time. As far as I know, GTA and GTA2 have no connection, but GTA3, GTA:VC, and GTA:SA seem to have their own storyline going, in the order of: GTA:VC, GTA:SA, and GTA3. I dunno if GTA4 picks up on this or not, but it does have a totally new engine from what I’ve heard so that may be why they randomly numbered this one.

  82. chriskoopa June 23, 2009 @ 6:24 pm

    agreed
    its bullshit

  83. piggypig890 June 23, 2009 @ 6:59 pm

great episode, I thought the same exact thing when I saw the trailer. “THE Final Destination,”… I was certain it was a remake.

  84. horrorfanboy June 23, 2009 @ 7:11 pm

Originally the film’s title was going to be
“Final Destination: Death Trip 3-D.” That would have made a little bit of a difference but the title still wouldn’t have told people it was the fourth movie.

    Long Live Horror!

Whoever thinks this week’s episode rules, say “I.”

  85. 3DMaster June 23, 2009 @ 7:37 pm

    You forgot about Star Trek:

Four movies “Star Trek: Subtitle” which was at least somewhat distinguishable; but now that new shit stain masquerading as a new installment of a great, if not the greatest, Science Fiction franchise, the 11th movie is called, wait for it:

    Star Trek.

Holy shit. When I logged in for the first time after having registered, I expected to be linked back to the main cinemassacre website. …I thought I had entered The Construct from the Matrix. Luckily, I made it out and now I’m here.

Just wanted to tell you, James, something you’ve probably heard a billion times, but is worth iterating again: you bring a sensibility to your assorted media and entertainment that is singular in comparison to EVERYTHING else currently being tweeted, blogged about, recorded, or created by any means on the internet 2.0 or..the blogosphere, or w/e they call it. To extrapolate, there is a dedication, craft, and personal passion evident in the many videos you make YKWBS, AVGN, or otherwise and I certainly can’t say the same for the rest of the people creating media on the internet. There is something personal about the things you do; It doesn’t feel like you are simply seeking attention or pandering to a certain “type” of people. I can’t say, because I don’t know you, we’ve never met, nor shaken your hand, but – what you do is authentic, sincere, and heartfelt (in all it’s raunchiness, which is only occasional anyway…and funny!).
Keeping with the idea that I’ve never even met you at a convention or something, nor am I an old friend, neighbor, or classmate; You pour your resources (heart, soul, time, money) into these vids and you provide this (FUCK THE HATERS, not that I know any, just people who narcissistically bitch at you to post vids sooner) one-of-a-kind content for free. That’s very generous under any circumstance, but the current economic situation only magnifies this. I’ve been unemployed and living off a combination of savings and money from my parent; I promise it’s not bad or bleak – I’m just not rolling in enough dough to buy video games, or comics, or go to the movies, as I had been accustomed to – it has to be more sparing now and part of a budget. It’s been a blessing in a way though, it’s forced me to do more with the spare time afforded to me; I’ve never been so productive in my personal life :) , but I digress. I at times pine for that comfort that comes from being by yourself and playing a video game or watching a film (reading a book, reading a graphic novel, w/e) or whatever feelings James Rolfe nails so well in the tone of his videos. So not just free entertainment, but this particular entertainment is sincerely appreciated and heavily, but patiently looked forward to :) . Thank you Mr. Rolfe for your dedication to everyones mutual enjoyment at cinemassacre.
    P.S. Sorry for WALLOFTEXT. oops.

  87. Mkong June 24, 2009 @ 12:34 am

Sorry to double-post especially after that Dickensian essay I just wrote above this, but I forgot to mention that I discovered your videos in ‘06 and have been enjoying all the output since!

P.S. Sorry if these posts seem corny. But I’m in my 20s and my buddies and I, and when I was employed – some co workers – use AVGN quotes daily, and I dunno James seems like the kinda “funny quotes” guy too, so he knows how far that can drive camaraderie (I assume, hopefully not too much.) Again, thanks for shit like that James Rolfe.

  88. Jackred June 24, 2009 @ 12:54 am

I do see your point James as they stop being original and start being cheap with remake being under the same title as the original is okay however having a sequel under that name or worst yet start being stop with the titles.

Oh by the way have you seen a movie called Creepshow III if you have then you should know it’s unofficial and flat out sucks man.

  89. marclawson June 24, 2009 @ 2:08 am

hollywood pussies out again by not taking any creative risks and simply disguising their lack of innovation with title tricks. how much money do they need before they can generate new ideas?

  90. Optics June 24, 2009 @ 7:32 am

    marclawson:

Creative risks? Hell, very few people in Hollywood even care about creativity at all anymore. It’s all money to them. Hollywood isn’t so much art anymore as it is pure business. Want a career in economics? Go to Hollywood!

James Cameron’s Avatar might be good, however. We’ll see. This is the guy who made Terminator 2 and Aliens we’re talking about.

  91. poisontongue June 24, 2009 @ 8:17 am

Right on. I was confused the moment 2F2F came out… not that I ever bothered to pretend to care. But that’s Hollywood, the whole industry is pretty much BS now.

As if games like Final Fantasy weren’t confusing enough… you’d think somebody would be PAYING ATTENTION!

    Refuse to see crappily-titled movies!

  92. archer9234 June 24, 2009 @ 10:30 am

Yeah these names are really fucking pissing me off. I have to constantly say Star Trek 2009, or “the new star trek” so people know wtf I’m talking about.

The Incredible Hulk is not a squeal to Hulk. It’s a franchise relaunch.

  93. Gros_Minou June 24, 2009 @ 10:51 am

    It’s look-like Halloween and Friday 13th recently.

I’ll say The Fast and Furious & Fast and Furious stay the same name in Québec.”Rapide et Dangereux” for both.

  94. megadom June 24, 2009 @ 11:34 am

Italy always had a strange behaviour with movie titles, distributors need to change something nearly everytime…
For instance, like in other countries, the first F&F movie was called “Fast and Furious”, so when the fourth came out they called “Fast & Furious: Solo Parti Originali” (Only Original Parts), with that strange subtitle, like in Germany, that is fully part of the title!
But the series that was fucked up most of all is the Die Hard series:
-Die Hard -> “Trappola di Cristallo” (Crystal Trap) [Ok it stands for the Nakatomi Skyscraper, could be right...]
-Die Hard 2: Die Harder -> 58 minuti per morire (58 minutes to die) [Why? When? WTF?]
-Die Hard with a Vengeance -> Die Hard: Duri a Morire (Die Hard: Die Hard) [it's the plain translation! So is it the first of the series? Why on earth doing such a thing???]
-Live Free or Die Hard -> Die Hard: Vivere o Morire (Live or Die) [Finally they did something that resembles the original title!]

But lately I was just shocked by the way they totally created something new…
The thriller-law movie with Anthony Hopkins “Fracture”…
The italian title is “Il Caso Thomas Crawford” (The Thomas Crawford Case)
    WHAT THE FUCK?
The translators went beyond every fucking known border in translation!
What was wrong with the original title? Why change the MAIN CHARACTER FIRST NAME? He was THEODORE (Ted) Crawford! WHAT THE HELL!
I just hate Italian movie importer/distributors…
    Fuck them all!
There are tons of other examples but right now I just don’t wanna thing about that at all…
    Bye guys!

P.S. James Rolfe you are a fucking genius! Just want to tell ya!

  95. sethcard June 24, 2009 @ 11:53 am

Movies that don’t want to admit they are remakes like The Condemned, Death Race, and set for release this September Gamer, or as I like to think of them The Running Man 25, 28, and 31.

  97. Barry the Nomad June 24, 2009 @ 3:33 pm

This years “Star Trek” made the same mistake 2006’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” made. Same goes for the latest Rambo film “RAMBO”. They are clear continuations of the past films/games and yet they go back to the same title as the first in the series. Ramkes can get away with this shit, but not sequels!

    Why not:
    Star Trek XI
Sonic Adventure 3 (or Sonic ShitStorm)
    Rambo IV

  98. keYserSOze June 24, 2009 @ 4:22 pm

James it’s like you’re invading my thoughts with these ‘you know whats bullshit’ episodes, the thing is though our generation is the blame, it’s us who are now running Hollywood and it’s us who have an obsession with nostalgia. This very site is almost proof of that! Keep up the good work!

  99. marclawson June 24, 2009 @ 5:43 pm

keYserSOze, you’re right, we are obsessed with nostalgia. but hollywood should know that you don’t create nostalgia when you take a good thing and you remake it in the same medium; you create crap.

  100. mousesquisher June 24, 2009 @ 7:28 pm

James, I’m surprised that with all of your ranting about messed up titles that you’ve never mentioned what a pain in the ass it is for those who have to shelve those things in the store. After all, the word ‘the’ is ignored when alphabetizing, Rambo isn’t with First Blood, etc.

& for those of y’all hatin’ on the new Star Trek movie’s name, keep in mind that the first Star Trek movie was Star Trek: The Motion Picture

  101. archer9234 June 24, 2009 @ 10:29 pm

But people can still get confused. A regular person would think Star Trek would be before TMP.

  102. 8-Bit Memoirs June 24, 2009 @ 10:42 pm

    HEYYYYY JAMMMMMMMEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

…lol ok maybe now i got ur attention, hey hows it goin, thank you for the comments on the new final destination and fast and the furious series , i cant STAND the lazyness that went into adding that small The into the title, smooth move on the movie execs parts, anywayz just wondering when the next board james is coming out, i gotta suggestion for one but its not really a board game but it kinda plays out that way. its the tcg aliens vs predator, i played this with my cousin a long time ago, if youve never played it, its actually pretty simple.

ok dont remember EXACTLY how it goes, maybe someone can comment on this but you choose wether your the alien, predator, or colonial marines, and choose a deck that works accordingly, as there are certain cards that work only with the aliens or predators or the marines, and then others that cna work with all classes, anyways, the game works by starting out with a small playing field or map in wich your characters can move (dont remember if it was a dice system to move along the map or what), but as the game progressed you could take playing field cards from your deck (usually hallways like the aliens movie type setting, and various airshafts and such) and you would place the cards on the edge of your map and build upon as the game progressed, so essentially this card games becomes a rather large scale board games and was pretty interesting when youd get a game going with all 3 classes. anyways thought you might wanna look into it as of course you are a fan of the series and i think youd have fun with this

  104. Barry the Nomad June 25, 2009 @ 9:24 am

I think the majority of us aren’t talking about NOW when it comes to the ordering of movies, we’re talking in the future.

Rambo, Star Trek films, Halloween, Leprechaun and the Jackie Chan films are… what, 15-25 years old? And I’m already confused as to their ordering. Sure, Wikipedia sorts it all out but do I really need to consult a website to know Where Halloween H2O falls into the timeline? Or if Leprechaun 4 takes place after Lep n’ the Hood?

Now take Spider-Man, Superman, Star Wars and Trek 1-6. Those don’t require prior knowledge. Heck, even my Grandma knows Spider-Man 3 comes after 2. (My Grandma loves Spider-Man, crazy huh?)

  105. Barry the Nomad June 25, 2009 @ 9:28 am

Also: Harry Potter, while not numbered in the title, features the year number on the DVD spine. So at least they give us that.

  106. BaconDude June 25, 2009 @ 11:50 am

    So true

  107. Weasler June 25, 2009 @ 5:19 pm

First time commenter, and I am a huge fan of your work. Normally anyway. While you make a great point when you are talking about the fast and the furious series, you really missed the reason why they named the final Final Destination move The Final Destination. The original movie didn’t have “the” in the title because it was going to be apart of an on-going series, and by adding the “The” in The Final Destination, they are using the laws of the english language to say that this will be the final movie of the series.

  108. archer9234 June 25, 2009 @ 6:21 pm

That wasn’t the point of the rant. The point was confusing unfamiliar people.

  109. qu3becker June 25, 2009 @ 10:52 pm

What’s more confusing is in the French Canadian version, both Fast & Furious and The Fast And the Furious are called Rapides et Dangereux, which translates to Fast and Dangerous. When I saw the ads on TV or something like that, I though it was a remake of the first one but I couldn’t care less, I don’t like this series. Too much of: look a my yellow bright and flashy turbo modified car that will crash into the wall during the race for a pinkslip which will include your girlfriend.
    Anyway, nice YKWB!

    Ice age meltdown
and now Ice age : Drawn of the dinasaurs
but in europe its called Ice age 2 and Ice age 3 : drawn of the dinasaurs
    witch is bullshit
ARE THEY TRYING TO TELL US THAT EUROPE IS STUPID!??

  112. Barry the Nomad June 26, 2009 @ 7:55 am

@ VAdePEGA, you’re REALLY going to hate the proposed 4th Ice Age, titled “Ice Age TH4W” as in Thaw, the ice melts and they are in the present day. God I wish that series ended with the first film. The first Ice Age is actually BETTER than Pixar’s weakest offerings.

As for Shrek, I hate it. The numbering is also fugged up.

    Shrek
Shrek 4D (retitled Shrek 3-D on DVD)
    Shrek 2
    Shrek the Third
    Shrek the Halls
    Shrek Forever After

I don’t think they care anymore. The shorter title makes it sell, otherwise people might not be interested in seeing the 4th movie if they haven’t seen the first three.

It sucks, but what can you do other than not watch it.

  119. pyrodude1230 June 27, 2009 @ 12:16 pm

Now i think that would make a good episode.

Very funny, and I’d have to agree on that James.

  121. LegatoSkyheart June 28, 2009 @ 1:24 pm

Just to let you know. I hate this too. I fell into victim to one of these titles when my bro bought the new Friday the 13th movie. (you know the remake?) I thought he bought the old Friday the 13th movie only it was in HD. But no it was the Remake. and to top it off it’s a Remake of the 2nd movie. so now I’m more confused. The Movie is called Friday the 13th but it’s NOT Friday the 13th but Friday the 13th part: 2!

man that’s horrible I hate them!!

    kill the blue rays!!! haaaaaa

  126. ninjay July 1, 2009 @ 9:48 pm

The worst case is when titles has to be translated. I know you mentioned the problem about a movie serie with zombie.

A worst example in French :

    - The first Die Hard is translated as “Piège de cristal” (the crystal trap) which might refers to the glass walled tower, the Nakatomi Plaza.

    - Crap ! The movie got so much success that there is even a sequel : the second one will be called “58 minutes pour vivre” (58 minutes to live). Might refers to the fact that the planes can keep flying for 58 minutes.

    - the third one is “Une journée en enfer” (a day in hell) : beat me if you know why …

    - At last ! the mention to the original title clearly appears : “Die Hard 4, retour en enfer” (back to hell)

  127. Enraged Elliott July 3, 2009 @ 12:08 am

If they could come up with good titles, they’d actually be coming up with something original, instead of ripping off an old movie.

It also looks like they are pulling that with the new MechWarrior game as well. It looks like they will just be calling it MechWarrior.

  131. alexnobody July 10, 2009 @ 9:28 pm

If you ever make another video like this one, be sure to mention Sonic the Hedgehog for the 360. You think adding “the” or removing subtitles is bad? How about just flat out calling it the same thing?

  132. jose5.0 July 11, 2009 @ 11:06 pm

AVGN, I agree 100% of what you said. Another thing that also pisses me off about movies these days is that ever since My Bloody Valetine in 3-D made the
3-D gimic big, it seems that everyone wants to jump on the idea too. Look at these movie trailers and you will see that most of them will say “in 3-D.” People in Hollywood feel the need to make crappy movies and then slap 3-D on the title just for people to spend $10.50 for a damn ticket!? That’s bullshit.

  133. Denivire July 12, 2009 @ 6:58 am

    Another laugh, another truth, James.

Reading someone saying Sonic being bullshit for repeating it’s title, I say Sonic’s bullshit ever since the devs for him, Sonic Team, started saying “let’s hire some shitty voice actor that looks like he’s on crack to do his voice, and make the games as fast as possible and most of them really shitty”. Fuck that.

Another game series that has it bad for numbering is Final Fantasy, mostly due to the international shipping and such. That gets almost as bad as Zelda for not having almost any sequels, and getting this shit load of prequels, which I’m suspecting that new one they’re making to be.

  134. alexnobody July 14, 2009 @ 3:50 pm

@Denivire I’m not talking about the gameplay. (I never played that one) I’m simply mentioning the title. There’s already a game called “Sonic the Hedgehog” on the Sega Genesis. Why would they use the exact same title, letter for letter, same capitalization, no subtitles, for a COMPLETELY different game?

However, you are right. These new Sonic games would DEFINITELY be AVGN material.

  137. ShutterBabe August 26, 2009 @ 10:46 am

You would absolutely DESPISE working at a library. The book titles are just seriously fucked up. Some books are organized by title, some are organized by number. But there’s no way to determine which books are categorize which way. Some book series that go by numbers decide to come out with books in the series that just don’t have numbers. They just like to skip it to fuck us all up! And there are some books that come in two versions: with numbers and without numbers. Yeah! The same exact book sometimes just doesn’t feel like being numbered or some shit like that. It’s bullshit.

  138. Blackbird August 29, 2009 @ 7:57 pm

Here it all gets fixed, not because people are stupid, but because they’re practical. The international market seems to fix all of this bullshit so that people don’t get confused. For example, here in Venezuela, First Blood got released as “Rambo”, and Rambo: First Blood Part 2 was released as “Rambo II”, and when “Rambo” came by, they just retitled it Rambo 4. Simple. Same with Fast & Furious 4 and even Transformers 2 were simply stripped of their subtitles or silly retitlings, got a number stuck on the end, and bam, people got it.

I’m sure if you look for DVDs in Spain they’re all okay, this seems to only be a problem in English-speaking markets (UK as well) for some very strange reason. Probably the higher-ups trying to fuck with our minds.

  139. The Don of Louisville September 4, 2009 @ 10:46 pm

I think what they’re trying to do is remind you of the first, or make it the most definitive movie of the series. Like for example, If there was a Mario 1, and it was super cool, and then Mario 2 they do something different, then Mario 3 they do something different again, but the whole time they stick to the same general theme, then they’re gonna make one that’s very very Mario-ish and call it just MARIO. It is bullshit, but at least I can understand what they’re trying to do. But, you people are generally smart and can figure that out for yourselves, I hope.

  140. Neko64 September 27, 2009 @ 4:50 pm

Some of your requests came true, James, in a certain way. In France, “Fast & Furious” has a 4 in its title, and “The Final Destination” is named “Destination Finale 4″ (As for “The Fast and The Furious”, it’s simply titled “Fast and Furious” =D)

It seems number 4 isn’t really appreciated in the US…

And now I remember that Sum 41, in one of their videos, were renamed “The Sums”…

The worst thing is when it comes to translationes of movies. I’m a Swede, and you can’t imagine what kind of BS we have to standup to. Sometimes they do a totally wrong translation of a movie title, like the movie spider, wich they renamned to “myror”, wich means ants in englisch. What kind of bullshit isnt that? Or even worse. When they give a movie with an english title a new english title. Unfortuently I can’t come up with an example, but there is a lot of them. And why do they only translate some movies, and not all movies?

    @ Maddin

    Interesting point

It’s one thing to have annoying movie titles but to make further matters worse are the damn subtitles, for one reason they don’t do all dialogue word for word. secondly dubbing is even worse, i’ve seen jackie chans police story 2, there’s the original language with english subtitles version And theres the english voice over-dubbing which looks and sounds funny even though it doesnt sync in with the moving lips. There are significant differences in dialogue but the movie is still the same.

Common sense isn’t COOL man, it’s never going to be Movie, Movie 2, Movie 3, etc., etc.
It’s all about original naming, even when it makes no sense, & remakes will blow your mind more because they won’t change the name of what the remake is, just the same or add The in front of it.
