Legend of the Blue Hole (2004)

May 17, 2004

This was my senior film in college, originally intended as a pilot episode for a series based on actual urban legends in southern New Jersey. I was inspired by Weird NJ magazines, the Twilight Zone and films like Creepshow where instead of having only one story, the movie is made up of many short stories. I still have plans to shoot the other “Jersey Odyssey’s”, but have no idea when. Too many projects, too little time.

I finally found some time to watch it completely and… boy!! That looks very professional. Great work! :D
I really like the scene changes you made there, especially the one “store -> Jason’s bed” looks fantastic. And the actor of Jason looks like Johnny Depp what the…!? :D (like in the movies Blow and The Secret Window) I guess I’m going to spend the rest of my evening with some more of your works. hmmm sadly things like “urban legend” doesn’t excists in the place where I live… at least not that I kow of.

    Keep up he great work!

    Greetings
    Danny

  10. Jersey_Girl201 December 8, 2008 @ 9:01 pm

This is by far one of my favorite films you have made. Having lived Jersey my whole life I grew up hearing all of the urban legends such as this and it’s great to see it put into such a great film.

Can i get a copy of this that i could put on a dvd? this is some of your best work!

  15. budgerigar767 March 3, 2009 @ 7:42 pm

I really cannot wait for the Jersey Odysseys II. Unfortunately, I’m afraid that James has too little time to work on another large production like this because of the demand for AVGN. :/ Something will have to change, eventually

  16. toronto. March 8, 2009 @ 3:30 am

hey, james how can i start to let you know how you have help me , i loved the AVGN but never did i expect you to be so…so ..well i dont know what to say but THANKS i love films to and wish i could pursue it in school or something but i cant afford anything like that ,i do have a friend who goes to some kind of art & film school who sometimes gets to use the cameras but we dont realy know how to use them and my friend not much help his rich parents pay for the school so he doesnt learn how to use them which drives me crazy…anyways seeing all your behind the scens at school and stuff realy hit home that whole school vibe seems cool but that old news for you, all night ive been watching you movies and love them all ,i think were the same age so ya…i cant wait to see your first major motion picture ..no boot leg copy for im going to the “MOVIES” TORONTO.

  17. jackeyboy1 March 10, 2009 @ 6:02 pm

great movie one of my favs

  18. KlownArt March 11, 2009 @ 10:15 pm

I used to come to this website just to watch AVGN, but this video actually made me join the site. I had to leave a comment on this.

Blue Hole is completely awesome. To me personally, it seemed like an adult version of the Ghostbumps series that came on Fox Kids in the 90s. The really drew me in with the mystery and the twist ending was great.

Thanks to the 200th video, I was able to find this. Good stuff.

  19. highkaizer March 22, 2009 @ 8:11 pm

Very nice, I think my favorite bit is the exploration sequence; love that music.

  20. ethanjroberts March 25, 2009 @ 1:09 pm

great job, loved it. like many, i would love a second episode but i guess you must be so busy with avgn, great job anyway!

  21. Mutough April 7, 2009 @ 6:13 pm

I don’t know about this one. I liked everything except for one thing: the main character. He was bland, two-dimensional, and I couldn’t relate. It wasn’t the actor, he was fantastic. It was the scripting. But that’s the only criticism I have. The rest was downright amazing.

  22. Mutough April 7, 2009 @ 6:14 pm

And it kinda reminded me of Goosebumps. In a good way.

  23. yeppat July 16, 2009 @ 1:32 am

wow, great plot and execution. it didnt drag and all the information was relevent. you dont see quality indie films like this very often.

  24. Juel92 August 2, 2009 @ 9:59 pm

    Intresting twist :D

  25. Solide August 5, 2009 @ 10:42 am

    Great movie indeed!

I’m also one of those people who first just watched avgn stuff but lately have been interesting more of your other videos and projects. I hope you make more movies later too… i know you must be very busy right now with AVGN and other comedy shows you make but as i said i hope you can find more time later to do actual films more ;)

    Greetings from Finland!

  26. larsz August 22, 2009 @ 1:40 pm

Around 1:57, you can see James in the background

  27. Linearmode August 23, 2009 @ 7:13 am

Enjoyed this one a lot. Would love to see another of these types one films.

  28. NHY August 23, 2009 @ 9:41 pm

Like others, I too also ended up first hearing you because of your Angry Video Game Nerd series and eventually decided to check out your website. After exhausting all of your AVGN series, I decided to check out what else you had on offer.

What can I say, I’m really impressed by what you have on offer, be it the Head Incident ( Which I’m enjoying so far ), DYKWBS or indeed, AVGN but I’m getting off topic so I’ll get onto Legend of the Blue Hole.

What can I say? This was really professionally done, its of extremely high quality, you even got the duller colour style that was in 90s kids horror shows down very well.

I’m going to admit, I actually jumped at one point, yeah, props for scaring me! The use of music was excellent as well, adding to the sense of tension in the wood scenes.

I loved the plot twist at the end, to me, it reminded of a 90s kids horror show ( ie, ‘ Goosebumps ‘ and ‘ Are you Afraid of the Dark? ‘ ) Though I did guess the shop keeper had something to do with the story, I just wasn’t expecting it to be THAT.

Overall, its was excellent, for a student film, I fail to see anything wrong and I’m sure this went down well with people in college.

    Greeting from Ireland!

  29. Kabi August 27, 2009 @ 3:32 am

I knew it since the guy reacted in a weird way to the cellphone that he was the one selling the book :D

Great film… and the acting of the main character was superb

Just if i want to pick a bit on the film

i think its a bit of overusing the camera tricks specially the flash of scenes in the nightmare

  30. Michael Myers September 5, 2009 @ 2:13 pm

Great job James! Your movies are incredible.

  31. Kevrock September 7, 2009 @ 4:52 pm

    This is amazing!
I have never been so impressed by a web production! This is truely incredible James!!

  32. ElwoodHi September 18, 2009 @ 1:36 am

Im just one of those guys who happend upon old AVGN videos on youtube bout 1 year ago. Watched em all, really liked em. Came over to Cinemassacre to check out some more. Didnt really watch any of the other videos here untill one day about a week ago i decided to watch “The Head Incident”. I watched the whole thing. I thought is was so crappy.
The next day all i thought about was that damn film. So, I watched it again and……again. I thought to myself. Hmmm, i think ill check out some more of this guys stuff. The second film i watched is this one.

Dude,James, Is AVGN (which i love) eating up all your time so you cant do stuff like this? Cmon man, the stuff i have watched tonight is winner winner chicken dinner! and those stupid wigs.

    Elwood

  33. davethomasfilms September 25, 2009 @ 12:33 pm

Great stuff! Very entertaining, and the twist surprised me. Even though I’m sure that final title slate is outdated at this point, I’d be willing to lend a hand in production of future projects if needed.

  34. Jaydub October 1, 2009 @ 8:24 pm

    Wow. What a phenomenal movie!

  35. Eliytres October 18, 2009 @ 5:52 pm

Nucking futs, awesome. I wish I could make movies like this. But but, was a bit disappointed when I noticed that I couldn’t watch it in fullscreen(fullscreen button didn’t work at all), but great movie indeed. Have had this problem with few of this sites films and would be really glad if I could get it working. :)

  36. GHPictures October 29, 2009 @ 5:48 am

whats the name of the song when jason drives to the blue hole

  37. Kyle Huey October 29, 2009 @ 12:14 pm

awesome, i can’t wait for a second. put it up on the website!

  38. Axia November 1, 2009 @ 7:56 am

Very good indeed, it kept my breath all the time specially when he got to the forest, I thought some creepy creature-thing would pop out and take him straight to hell, well thats the whole point of making movies taking the audience to imaginary places and stuff, hoping to see more projects like these, some years ago I was obbesed with urban legends all over the world and certainly The Jersey Devil was rather interesting, I even remember they made a videogame about it.

Youre really meant to do movies James and you were gifted with a huge imagination, Ill check your future works, oh and by the way, youre really popular here in Costa Rica, and we have lots of urban legends and horror tales, Id share them with you anytime:)

    Keep up.

    Esteban

  40. Biofetus November 9, 2009 @ 11:20 pm

i finally got around to watching this. glad i did. james, you need to make more of these.
    great job man!

  41. Seth Gecko November 16, 2009 @ 4:08 pm

Well, having now seen almost every movie in the “films” category (and in every other category for that matter, and oh, thank you for putting “monkey cheez” in my brain, I hate you for that..;-) ), I have to say that I liked almost every film, but this one really stands out for me, I love it. I know you don’t have the time at the moment, but please feel encouraged to do another one. The score, the story, the actors, the setting, the editing, I really really enjoyed this movie. Keep it up!!

  42. lonmanMV05 November 28, 2009 @ 2:23 am

I, as so many, use to only come on this site to watch AVGN reviews. Yet, given the two week period in between reviews, I find myself bored at times, anticipating the next one. It is actually a great thing in a way because it has brought my attention to other works on Cinemassacre. First, I started watching the Bullshit episodes. Next, I was drawn in by some of the animated movies and eventually found myself watch Board James episodes and Monster Madness. I must say though, compared to everything else you have to offer on your site, James, these movies under “Favorites” definitely take the cake. As a huge AVGN fan, I would happily take one review a month if it gave you that extra time needed to make more films like this. There are movies at the theatres that don’t even match up to the greatness of this short and “The Deader the Better.” Please makes some more productions like these soon!

  43. RawMetal December 3, 2009 @ 4:39 am

Think of the bright side of the 70’s, you can go to a Black Sabbath concert.

  44. moley55 December 22, 2009 @ 8:57 am

I absolutely loved that, the story line was great, the acting was great and ending was just fantastic! I really didn’t expect it at all, i thought that maybe the store owner was evil but not that! Also it looked really professional and i really hope you get time to film the others you are clearly incredibly talented at what you do

  45. MagicLoogie77 December 24, 2009 @ 11:21 pm

Holy crap, that almost hurt my head. I figured when you said “twist ending” in ‘Cinemassacre 200,’ it would be something else-something almost predictable. But this… holy crap. Excellently done.

  46. KingVitaman January 13, 2010 @ 6:29 pm

Ok. Im off to watch more Twilight Zone. This is spot on in its overall feel. Would absolutely love to see more shorts like this, made up of many smaller stories. Cheers

  47. KingVitaman January 13, 2010 @ 6:34 pm

  50. AVGNerdFan January 20, 2010 @ 2:43 am

Holy awesomeness! I’m a fan of Creepshow + the Twilight Zone. This was a very well put together movie. I enjoyed the ending as much as I knew what was going to happen when you flashed back to the shelves. Very well put together again! Hope you do more like this in the near future.

  51. Rockah January 31, 2010 @ 2:49 am

I would give my left testicle to see a new “Jersey Odyssey’s” episode.

  52. Optics February 2, 2010 @ 9:46 pm
