    couldn’t wait :D

  3. WeirdEdz October 19, 2009 @ 3:06 am

    WTF!!!

  4. Spazz Master October 19, 2009 @ 3:07 am

How did I know you were going to put the SONG in this video?

    That was AWESOME!!!

  5. wimmywoo October 19, 2009 @ 3:15 am

James, you sir are going to explode if you say that intro any harder! On the 31st will it be all death metal vocals? Cant wait to hear it.
Good review mate, i’ve always been curious about this one, i might check it out. I dunno the 80’s horror doesnt have the same feel to it in comparison to the classic era. Anywho, keep up the great work.

  6. Blood Pump October 19, 2009 @ 3:16 am

Don’t worry, I’m done with the ‘annoying’ C.H. comments like the few of my previous ones (I must have been possessed by a Cannibal spirit or something ;) ).

Anyways, on onto Basket Case. Its definitely not as good as the last reviewed movie, “An American Warewolf in London” (Then again, its a little difficult to top that one), BUT, I love this movie anyways. Its one of those ‘So Bad its Good’ (At least to me) flicks that screams cheesy classic.

  7. JS Partisan October 19, 2009 @ 3:17 am

This movie is just wrong. It’s just so freakin wrong, that it’s hysterical in a bad way. I could go on a stretch about the stop-motion, the shitty puppet, and how this movie is like Martin. If Martin had a really bad puppet attached to his body, but I will just stop. You should see it at least once to say you saw it.

  8. wimpy27 October 19, 2009 @ 3:17 am

I watched Basket Case 2 before the first one. The main reason was just because the title was the same as the Green Day song.

And man, that’s one fucked up, specially the bizarre sex scene, with the monsters party.

  9. MaF October 19, 2009 @ 3:18 am

“James, you sir are going to explode if you say that intro any harder! On the 31st will it be all death metal vocals? Cant wait to hear it.”

    HA HA

harder than Green Day? It might be Vanila Ice.

Movie, i wish i’d never seen. It’s so discustib :P

  10. scylla October 19, 2009 @ 3:21 am

Ugh, oh man! I remember watching this movie (with my mom!) for some insane reason. The sex scene with the monster going “BAAAGHH” is burned into my brain after just one watch, sadly. Hilarious to see you reviewed this.

  11. angeltread October 19, 2009 @ 3:22 am

omg i gotta see this movie

  12. DawnOfRobby October 19, 2009 @ 3:23 am

Wow, its a movie I haven’t seen. Looks like I’m going to have to be big eyed looking for this one the next time I’m out looking for a movie.

Ohya and its too bad you scipt so much of the 70’s. Next year you definitely need to showcase 1979’s “Prophecy” (and no I’m not talking about “The Prophecy” with Christopher Walken) in Monster Madness. If you haven’t seen it then look it up as soon as possible because its completely worth it.

  13. Cyril ViXP October 19, 2009 @ 3:32 am

Cool. Never heard about this one

  14. horrorfanboy October 19, 2009 @ 3:37 am

This is a cool review, James. Very bloody. I’ve never seen Basket Case. I’ll check it out. Belial is cool.

  15. KojimaMetalGearfan October 19, 2009 @ 3:38 am

Hey James, you forgot to mention that you mentioned this movie in your Sega 32X review when you reviewed the Sega CD add-ons.

The stop animation puppet reminded me alot of Wallace and Grommet for some reason, as well as the Clay-Fighter games..

Anyways, a couple of movie suggestions I have for you to include for this year’s Monster Madness, the first being the Child’s Play series with Chucky, the possessed killer doll voiced by Brad Dourif.

The 2nd movie being Warlock, with Julian Sands which spawned 2 sequels, Warlock: The Armageddon and Warlock III: The End of Innocence. And the final one being the Phantasm series with Angus Scrimm as the Tall Man!

  16. KojimaMetalGearfan October 19, 2009 @ 3:39 am

Sega CD?, I meant Sega Genesis add-ons.

  17. greenibanez October 19, 2009 @ 4:00 am

what a fucked up looking movie! i cant’ belive some of the shit that they make into movies.

  18. 68WMedic October 19, 2009 @ 4:04 am

I remember seeing a movie similiar to this but I think it was an ape like monster in a large box. The once I remember most from the movie is an ape like arm reaching out and pulling someone’s head inside the box. Soon after the body fell from the box decapitated. Also whenever the monster would strike the screen would turn a shade of red.

This might have been on an episode of the Crypt Keeper. I was just a little guy when I saw it.

  19. wimmywoo October 19, 2009 @ 4:26 am

“The 2nd movie being Warlock, with Julian Sands which spawned 2 sequels,”

Heh… Warlock jeeesus how could i forget that one! Cheers KMGfan i gotta watch those ASAP!Classic.

  20. 80sMade October 19, 2009 @ 5:03 am

68WMedic, your thinking of Creepshow directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King…the story your talking about was called The Crate my fav of the 5 storys from the movie.

  21. Kriztoffer Swank October 19, 2009 @ 5:03 am

This is one of my favorite horror comedies. Frank Henenlotter is brilliant in a demented sort of way. All of his movies are hilarious (yes, the humorous aspects are intentional, folks) and must-sees. Frankenhooker (my favorite of his), Brain Damage, Bad Biology… The Basket Case sequels are also good, but of a different nature from his other films. The sleaze factor is toned down (though still present), and the humor comes off as a little more…childish, and not all that weird. They remind me of Ernest Scared Stupid but less kid-friendly. Which isn’t a bad thing, since I love ESS and the BC sequels, just sayin’.

Everyone should see Basket Case at least once, and if they like that, they should move on to Henenlotter’s other films (save the Basket Case sequels for last). Also, for a similar trip but not directed by Henenlotter, Street Trash is a really good one.

I dunno, I just love trashy, low-budget sleaze flicks, especially when they’re comedies. I just got done watching Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers for the first time and absolutely loved it!

  22. Karate Kid Icarus October 19, 2009 @ 5:05 am

The 80’s were a little messed up. This is a perfect example.

I could go into detail but too much info exists that Cinemassacre might touch upon. Later on maybe.

    Cheers

  23. RocketeerRaccoon October 19, 2009 @ 5:14 am

What a strange movie, never heard of it before and this is the first time I’ve ever seen this.

  24. Kriztoffer Swank October 19, 2009 @ 5:14 am

Say, James… I don’t suppose you’re a fan of Dario Argento, are you? If you haven’t seen any of his stuff, I highly recommend Suspiria, Opera, Tenebrae, Deep Red, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, and a bunch others. My all-around favorite horror film director.

  25. kaltblut October 19, 2009 @ 5:21 am

I wonder if “Bad Taste” and/or “Meet the Feebles” will be in this MM.

  26. krururaras October 19, 2009 @ 5:23 am

hahaha never heard about this movie :D gotta love the 80s movies wilth all their gore and stuff it just looks so awesome ! :)

  27. mayrrr October 19, 2009 @ 5:28 am

oh yeah! basket case! jajajaja just hilarious. ohh! flashbacks come to my mind…!

  28. Ed Sigma October 19, 2009 @ 5:39 am

Basket Case is the perfect example of a “Branston Pickle” movie (to coin a phrase from Yahtzee) – it’s deeply flawed but it’s something you have to try at least once anyway, because there’s honest to God nothing else like it!

This easily has to be the sleasiest movie on the list yet, and that’s one of the reasons it works, the low budget means we get a very raw, very dirty New York feel that a massive budget couldn’t replicate. It also has moments of truely macabre genius, like when we see Belial and Duane being looked after by their Aunt at Christmas and she’s cradling Belial in her arms in the rocking chair like a baby!

  29. Modern Nerd October 19, 2009 @ 6:09 am

Basket Case by Green Day. What a pun. :)

  30. JarkkoG October 19, 2009 @ 6:20 am

Seeing this review makes me really appreciate the golden age of universal horror movies.

  31. darcman0 October 19, 2009 @ 6:24 am

I remember that movie, the stop motion parts are way too cheesy, makes it seem unprofessional, but it was a low budget film. The only reason it sorta had a cult following was because the early 80s was when VHS and home movies got big.

  32. Optics October 19, 2009 @ 6:26 am

    I remember this movie.

  33. dicnar October 19, 2009 @ 6:40 am

WOW. I live for those movies! Thx James for bringing yet another brilliant piece of cinema to my attention :D

  34. Sirius October 19, 2009 @ 6:48 am

    Hot damn.

I remember we found this movie at a flea market on DVD a couple of years ago. Neither of us had heard of it, but we bought it based on the cover alone. So hilarious:-)

  37. Ithilgore October 19, 2009 @ 7:39 am

Geez the intro is getting more and more over the top, you’re going to be outright screaming by Halloween.

I hope you’re going to do The Thing next, I don’t think you got to do it in the 2007 MM.

  38. Kevin R. October 19, 2009 @ 7:54 am

That movie looks fucking hilarious, in a dumb ’80s kind of way. And great use of Green Day. I take it that we’re gonna be seeing a lot more cheesy ’80s flicks in the coming days? (holding out hope for Night of the Creeps)

Oh, and since everybody else is telling you what films they want reviewed next year, I’d like to join in and propose Carrie for Monster Madness 4. Between that and The Shining (which you reviewed two years ago), it’s probably the best horror film based off of a Stephen King book. Some memorable, review-worthy lines and scenes (”They’re all gonna laugh at you!”, “Plug it up!”, the entire prom scene), the nutball Jesus freak mom, the fact that it’s a teen horror film from before those were cool, the ample flesh on display, the rather disturbing-in-hindsight elements of the plot (it’s basically a female, supernatural version of Columbine), and of course, the fact that it got nominated for two Oscars (for acting!). One of the greatest horror movies of the ’70s.

  39. Scary German Guy October 19, 2009 @ 8:20 am

My younger brother and I watched this when I was like 10 and he was 8 yrs old.
It was so shocking to us and scary, but we understood the humor and kind of made a game of it.

For months after I would refer to him as ‘Belial’ and he would hide in a large basket we had and jump out at anyone who walked through the hallway.

Playing like that took away all the scary elements, and my memory of this movie is just having fun as a kid with my brother.

Good times…but I bet if I watched it now I’d be like, Holy Shit! I saw this at 10 yrs old!?!

  40. RickyBlaikie October 19, 2009 @ 8:22 am

the video wont load please help

  41. Gavie October 19, 2009 @ 8:40 am

    Great review.

Great use of the Green Day song (I wondered if you would include the song in the review before I watched it, and indeed you did.. :P ) Went to their concert last friday, fantastic live band.

Back on topic, this movie seems hilarious! I love all these monster madness reviews! Keep em coming!

  42. Slayer of 100 October 19, 2009 @ 8:42 am

Holy crap, that was some fucked up shit!

not to nitpick but a good idea would’ve had the green day song to start the review not to end it

  48. rashktah October 19, 2009 @ 10:16 am

    Wow, that’s a twisted movie… O.o

  49. Violenzia October 19, 2009 @ 10:17 am

Okay this came close to the Giant Claw on the hilarity meter. If I saw this movie on DVD somewhere, I’d buy it.

  55. ZOhasarrived October 19, 2009 @ 11:45 am

Holy Crap James! I saw this movie 2 weeks ago and promptly watched the sequels. haha, I loved it!
It’s one of my friend’s favorites now, along with 555!

By the way, you need to review 555! Very obscure and kinda rare, but well worth it!

  56. Vault_Master October 19, 2009 @ 11:55 am

Awesome stuff James. You know what I never understood?

    WARNING: SPOILERS!!!!!!

How the HELL does Belial rape his brother’s girlfriend toward the film’s climax?! Like you said, Belial is just a lump of flesh with two arms and a mouth full o’ sharp teeth! Maybe he’s packing something beneath a fold of flesh but…. HOW?!?!?!??! LOL!

  57. evan798 October 19, 2009 @ 11:55 am

Yeah Horrorfanboy is right… do Creepshow!

  58. Psykhophear October 19, 2009 @ 12:22 pm

Eww, I would never watch this if I were a kid. It would give me nightmares. But nevertheless, great addition to the Monster Madness 3.

  59. InkedUp October 19, 2009 @ 12:46 pm

I saw this film when it was on cable.I never saw it in the theaters.
I just remember laughing every time that thing came out of the basket to kill.

  60. ReesiePuffs October 19, 2009 @ 12:55 pm

This is my friend’s favorite horror flick. He roared with laughter when the gimp was doing his brother’s gf.

  61. Exzodium October 19, 2009 @ 1:49 pm

I saw it at my friends house, but I only really remember 2 and 3. It was his brothers movie, and I am glad James did a video of it this year, cause I have a hard time remembering the names of all the movies I have seen.

  62. Dracurella143 October 19, 2009 @ 2:59 pm

Man, I remember seeing this movie as a kid, I was waaay too young to see this, had nightmares for weeks.
    Great times, lol.
Never saw the sequels though, I didn’t even know they existed, strange.

  63. cloob1 October 19, 2009 @ 3:11 pm

I watched this one earlier this morning. Doode, I’ve been thinking about this shit all day! I’ve got to see it.

  64. Junta Juleil October 19, 2009 @ 3:51 pm

This is one of my all-time favorites- a psychotic, sleazy, low-budget melding of Freud, Cronenberg, IT’S ALIVE, and the classic, tragic archetype of the deformed, misunderstood monster (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, etc.).

For fans of the film, the special edition DVD has got some genuinely hilarious extras that are definitely worth your time, including a glimpse of Beverly Bonner’s (she plays Casey, the rambling hooker) totally INSANE public access variety show and an unscripted return to original locations which features genial director Frank Henenlotter and utterly unhinged writer/rapper ‘R.A. the Rugged Man’ as they try (and frequently fail) to revisit seedy locations filmed at some 25 years before.

    Excellent review, James.

  65. Darthgaiden October 19, 2009 @ 4:11 pm

Well, I’ve never even heard of this movie, and now I gotta go run out and find it as fast as I can so I can watch it Right Now!!

Thanks for manipulating me again so smoothley, James…

    >:(

  66. tzaikoh October 19, 2009 @ 4:14 pm

hey James, would you do a review of the 7th seal?(not sure if it could be part of the monster madness, since there are no monsters, but its worth mentioning) have you done it already? or have you never seen the movie? (to many haves in one sentence…)

its a pretty interesting movie that has passed well under the radar, im thinking you would enjoy it

  67. Kid_Icarus October 19, 2009 @ 4:31 pm

Hey James (or anyone else that can answer), I was wondering if it’s possible to download all the AVGN and Monster Madness vids from years past. I love coming to the site to watch them, but I’m a collector and I would love to have this stuff on a thumb drive to take anywhere with me. I know you can download a lot of the more recent AVGN videos, just not sure about the rest. If I can’t do it, that’s ok too. Thanks and keep up the good work…very entertaining stuff.

  68. Jayedan October 19, 2009 @ 4:46 pm

LOL he Shoud shut his fat anouing mounth what a crack head

  69. 108 Stars October 19, 2009 @ 4:54 pm

James, I learn of so many great horror-movies through your videos! It´s amazing what weird movies you know, that´s what I call a real film-fan!

This one seems especially hilarious, I have to find get it!

BTW, mix this movie and the movie “Freaks” you showed as no.5, and you pretty much have the base for the X-Files episode “Humbug”.
A deformed syamese brother jumping off his brother and killing people in a freak show.

  70. JPete10 October 19, 2009 @ 5:11 pm

My favorite Monster Madness so far. Why? Because of a double helping of Green Day! Great video James. Keep it up.

  71. Pete09 October 19, 2009 @ 5:50 pm

I wonder do they split the rent???

  72. Pauluk35 October 19, 2009 @ 6:14 pm

    great review.

  76. mestre12 October 19, 2009 @ 6:37 pm

a great movie and i like this kind of chessey mvoie there

take a good b-movie horror to makea great list

  77. Arliman October 19, 2009 @ 6:57 pm

There is an X-Files episode called Humbug where Vincent Schiavelli plays a sideshow man with a large “growth” on the side of his body which later turns out to be his brother who detaches himself and goes around killing people trying to attach itself to them. Now, it’s quite obvious what inspired this episode.

  78. horrorfanboy October 19, 2009 @ 7:27 pm

I just watched the whole movie on youtube. It’s a cheesy classic horror film. I’ll check out the sequels as well.

  80. Scorpeon October 19, 2009 @ 7:59 pm

Thanks for reviewing this movie. I watched it for the first time a few months ago and I fell in love with it. It’s so cheesy and sleazy and grainy. Don’t bother with the sequals though. I saw the second movie and it was awfull. It didn’t have the charm of the first.

  81. weskersgotslacks October 19, 2009 @ 8:14 pm

lol I remember this movie, not much of it though. Gotta watch it again. Nice Review!

  84. startrekalien October 19, 2009 @ 10:01 pm

I saw this when I was or 4 (1983) at a friend’s. My mom had a clock that had a similar shape and it scared me. I later found it (1999) and loved it. One recomendation, NEVER see the sequels. They are true crap.

  85. Freakydude October 19, 2009 @ 11:52 pm

This movie looks freaking awesome. I’ve actually seen the dvd at the local dvd store and didn’t even know what to think of it. Now I gotta go buy it. It was only like 4 dollars :)

  97. Sample And Hold October 25, 2009 @ 11:01 am

It’s funny, the scene that is shown where the lead character with the basket is talking to the woman in the bar, I heard those lines before in a song. The song was released in like 1991 or so by a group called Eon. The album was called Void Dweller. The song, was of course called “Basket Case.” I always wondered where that sample came from. Also, this group was featured in the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the school dance. If I remember the song correctly, it was “Fear is the Mind Killer.” Good stuff.

  98. P4INKiller October 29, 2009 @ 12:59 pm

That’s funny, it looks exactly like the two legged head freaks in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
Now I know where the inspiration came from.

I finally understand your reference when you mentioned this movie in your Sega CD review, speaking about the genesis’ siamese twin :)

Iono if someone already said this but…in the Basket Case 3 trailer it totally looks like Krang when the brother is controlling some kind of machine and fighting the sheriff. Check it out! lol

Hehe, very cool use of Green Day songs. At first I thought “hm.. strange, he didn’t use it one the Monster Madness intro. Oh well, he’s probably saving it.”

And then I got really confused when Good Riddance started playing and thought “What?! he’s not gonna use Basket Case at all?”

But then at the end: “Aha! There it is ^^”

I already have a freakish amount of movies I need to watch and you just keep adding new ones to the list! Keep up the good work!
