Another year of Monster Madness in the books!

    Superb job, sir!!!

Admittedly, I would have liked to see a review of The Frighteners, but Devil’s Rejects makes up for that!

  6. tomc1980 October 31, 2009 @ 3:08 am

Was a wonderful Monster Madness James and i hope it comes back next year. Gonna miss it though now that its over with. Thanks for all the good movies and i now have a ton of new flicks to watch. Happy Halloween.

  7. Y. A-H. October 31, 2009 @ 3:10 am

Awesome stuff, good job, cool metal yells, nice reviews!

Next time you do one, you best review The Omen, my favorite horror movie.

James, do you know of the band Iced Earth? They made an entire album that has songs based on horror movies, like Frankenstein, Dracula, Jeckle and Hyde, and even a song about The Omen(Damien). It’s called Horror Show and you should check it out if you like heavy metal.

  8. avgnfan3 October 31, 2009 @ 3:12 am

idk if I will see this, but thanks anyways, Happy Halloween!!!!!

  9. AtticMan October 31, 2009 @ 3:13 am

You know, House of 1000 Corpses left me feeling so bad about life that I vowed never to watch another Rob Zombie movie. Well James, you’ve changed my mind, I’m going to check out Devil’s Rejects.

Any plans for next year’s Monster Madness? I’ve been finding myself watching an inordinate number of zombie movies these days myself, and I’m curious as to what you think about the movie ‘Fido’.

  10. You Can Just Walk Over It October 31, 2009 @ 3:17 am

It’s hard to pick a favorite video from all 31, but I’ll have to say The Fly video was the highlight of Monster Madness for me. I grew up only watching the remake and its sequel, and a few years ago watched the original one, and was blown away at how impressive it was for being half a century old.

Your points of how he doesn’t go crazy once he is a fly and the analytical/emotional message from the movie really nailed how I felt when first watching The Fly, so maybe that’s why I could relate with the video.

As for The Devil’s Rejects, I’m pretty sure you met Sid Haig and had a photo taken with him in your gallery section, so I was kind of expecting this movie, even if most of Monster Madness was 1930/1980s loaded.

  11. Jody Nidosky October 31, 2009 @ 3:19 am

Yeah Devil’s Rejects one of favorite movies all time, Rob Zombie a fucking movie genius

  12. TheRockerGuy October 31, 2009 @ 3:21 am

I FUCKING KNEW YOU WOULD PICK THIS

    Fuck yeah James, Fuck Yeah

  13. mafiaz187 October 31, 2009 @ 3:24 am

    Happy Halloween James!

    NOW MAKE WITH THE CASTLEVANIA!

  14. walrusonion October 31, 2009 @ 3:29 am

i’m surprised you didnt get to 28 days later, well maybe next year

  15. j.bruha October 31, 2009 @ 3:33 am

I have to say, I’m a bit disappointed that you ended such a successful Monster Madness on a movie like The Devil’s Rejects. While better than his previous work, it was still a Rob Zombie movie/awful. His most successful movie was only a hit because he didn’t write the story. I don’t think the turn of sympathy for the serial killers is unique or “great film making” at all. It just makes for a convoluted story that generates apathy from the viewer since none of the characters relate by the time it’s over.

Rob Zombie should stick to what he does best, and what he does best is NOT make horror movies.

  16. Blood Pump October 31, 2009 @ 3:36 am

Was a really good list this year. I’ll agree that the current Decade is crap, but if you look in the right places, you’ll still find gold if you look in the right places (The Devil’s Rejects, as you said, being the top of the gold mountain. Another being the Original (ORIGINAL) Saw movie, who a lot of people have forgotten due to all the shit sequels its had).

I’m really glad you’re possibly doing this again next year. I’m not saying do the ones I’m listing after this post, but just take them into slight consideration:

20’s: Häxan (Or Witchcraft Through The Ages)
30’s: Doctor X, Island of Lost Souls, The Devil-Doll
40’s: The Picture of Dorian Gray
50’s: Attack of the Giant Leeches (for the Rofl factor)
60’s: Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs!, & Color Me Blood Red (Just out of the fact that they are considered the first Splatter Films)

70′: Twitch of the Death Nerve (Technically the first Slasher with a Body Count), Frogs (Rofl Factor), Zombie Flesh Eaters (AKA Zombi 2 in Italy), The Omen, Carrie(Probably the most important movie not listed in either list from the 70’s along with Omen), Silent Night, Bloody Night, Don’t Look Now, The Amityville Horror, The Wicker Man (Alright, I need to stop listing 70’s films :p).

80’s: Too many to list still (Though Predator is a notable one)
90’s: Silence of the Lambs (Well, technically its a thriller), Misery, The Blair Witch Project.
    00’s: Saw.

REMEMBER, THESE ARE NOT REQUESTS. I just did this so that they can be put through consideration, and don’t mind how the next Monster Madness goes no matter what.

    Anyways, HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!

  17. Jay October 31, 2009 @ 3:37 am

James… double you tee eff man?!?!?

I completely respect you as a cinematographist. You have turned me on to so many old horror movies. Even the movies I thought I didn’t like, you showed me some artistic perspective that made me see the movie in a different light.

But HOW is Devil’s Rejects a horror movie? It’s more of a sick twisted, escape the law type movie. Don’t get me wrong I thought the movie was great! It exposes those disgusting thoughts that we humans keep hidden. It was pure genious. But for god sakes, it’s Halloween, you are reviewing horror movies; super natural, undead, even aliens, but these are 3 human beings doing nothing more than escaping the law.
Even House of a 1000 corpses had a slasher theme to it. that would have been fine. But this movie is completely different from House of a 1000 Corpses.

I was hoping you would ignore all those morons requesting this video as one of your halloween reviews.

However, you still rock. Keep up the good work, entertaining us.

  18. Blood Pump October 31, 2009 @ 3:39 am

Oh, and 28 Days later is another good current decade movie as well.

  19. runlikehell4420 October 31, 2009 @ 3:46 am

I have to say, great job on the Monster Madness this year. And great job picking The Devils Rejects as the halloween review. Fucking great dude. Keep it up, and keep up those AVGN that shit is fucking rediculous. You got a great thing goin for yourself.

  20. nelsonr1 October 31, 2009 @ 3:53 am

great movies and reviews james! i really enjoyed this monster madness totally agree that devils rejects is one of the best horror movies of the decade Happy Halloween everyone!

  21. Keeto787 October 31, 2009 @ 3:59 am

This was the best “Cinemassacre Monster Madness!!!” scream. A great conclusion to a great month of horror films. Happy Halloween.

  22. Irish October 31, 2009 @ 4:00 am

James i wannna thank you so much for doing monster madness every year
theres to many woulds id like to say
but ur fans say it all to well

  23. 80sMade October 31, 2009 @ 4:01 am

I’m not trying to be an ass but good god BLOOD PUMP you sure like to list your favs any chance you get huh lol…again I’m playing so please don’t take it the wrong way, alot of posters on here seem to. Maybe you should make a video like Moster Madness of your own.

Anyways James, great movies this Monster Madness and thanks for some flicks I never heard about I’mma have to check out now.
The Devil’s Rejects was a great movie and seemed like a horror flick outta the 70’s with it’s dirty, girtty style.

  24. Blood Pump October 31, 2009 @ 4:05 am

Nah, s’all good :> I’d probably make a video myself, but I can’t. However, I’m planning on making a blog to do movie reviews, but probably not soon (I’m a pretty busy guy).

I always, ALWAYS name drop movies when I get a chance. Film is a very satisfying art to me, beaten out only by music.

  25. Spinoraptorrex October 31, 2009 @ 4:11 am

Good review, but I hoped you’d review Event Horizon or 28 Days Later. Maybe next year then. I hope to see Carrie, The Omen, Misery and Predator next year as well.

  26. Kriztoffer Swank October 31, 2009 @ 4:14 am

Thanks for this year’s Monster Madness, James. Really enjoyed watching each new video each day, and I appreciate all the work you put into them.

The Devil’s Rejects is a pretty good flick. Didn’t much care for it the first time through, but enjoyed it immensely when I revisited it about three years later. It’s a nice throwback to 1970s exploitation flicks.

Gotta say, though, I enjoy House of 1000 Corpses much more. It’s a fun little homage to the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, I just love it. The music video-esque qualities are loads of fun.

  27. Reaper2113 October 31, 2009 @ 4:14 am

You’re outta your mind, horror nerd. House of 1k corpses was totally superior. It had all the great elements of a legitmate and fun horror film: Twisted, yet unique, characters, outrageous settings, great dialouge and, the best in my opinion, was the experimentation and raw cut scenes filmed using a camcorder (the intro, transistions, Dr. Satan rising from the grave, etc.). It wasn’t much a music video in the sense that he didn’t use any real music (with the exception of the title screen and the ramones). It was all atmospheric. I thought Rejects was more gritty and serious and yes the whole good guys are the bad guys who are hunted down by the bad good guys was a great scenerio. But a lot the dialogue in Rejects I felt was to inane, it sounded like he was trying to hard (tootie-fuckin fruitie, are you for real? That was so anoying. I fast forward through that part everytime I watch that movie.) I’m not saying Rejects was horrible film (I jumped and screamed when Tiny came out and kill off Widell) I think Zombie’s masterpiece will forever remain House of 1000 Corpses.

On another note, great Monster Madness I thouroughly enjoyed it and loved hearing your take on some of my all time favorites (Cemetary Man, Child’s Play, Basketcase, Re-Animator, etc. ad ferum). You have a keen eye and great taste for the vicious, brutal, violent and the macabre. There’s probably a mile long list of films you ‘could’ have reviewed but I think we can all wait until next year.

And to you, James and all the fans who read these:
Do yourself a favor and see ‘The Poughkeepsie Tapes’. You’d think it was a trend movie using the POV cams (like cloverfield and blair witch) but it turns into a mockumentary surrounding a vicious ruthless serial killer who goes beyond the veil of sado-masicism when torturing and killing his victims (he also videotapes every killing thus the title.)

Happy Halloween to all and to all a malevolent night.

‘Stop stealing the dead from me’

  28. Reaper2113 October 31, 2009 @ 4:20 am

Also check out ‘I Sell the Dead’. It’s about Irish graverobbers from the 15th centuary (guessing) who encounter the undead, and have it out with a rival gang of ghouls, The House of Murphy.

  29. JayRam October 31, 2009 @ 4:28 am

It seems like MM just began, now it’s over. Great job, James. Lookin forward to seein what you come up with next October.

  30. Mr. Arkadin October 31, 2009 @ 4:46 am

Hey, that’s Dragos, from Jason of Star Command!

    Sid Haig is cool.

  31. DawnOfRobby October 31, 2009 @ 4:49 am

Excuse me but ouch!! Ended this years epic Monster Madness with that? I can’t help but leave my opinion about this movie and Rob Zombie. I can’t stand the film “the Devils Rejects” because I can’t watch a “horror” film that tries to make serial killers out to be the hero’s. Only Rob Zombie would write a plot of this sort because hes a closet serial killer himself. I mean look at both his Halloween movies… both focus on the killers life instead of the originals MAIN CHARACTER Laurie Strodes. Rob Zombie spent the hole poor excuse for a remake focusing on trying to make us like michael meyers as if hes a good guy and that its alright that hes slaughtering everybody.

The only part I like out of The Devils Rejects is the Sheriff Wydell (which reminds me of Lieutenant ‘Lefty’ Enright/ Dennis Hopper from TTCM2) and the scene where Sheriff Wydell tortures them all (as I set, laughed, and aplauded) but it was dissapointing when he couldnt finish the job. I just couldnt enjoy the rest of the movie because Rob Zombies wet dream movies don’t entertain me. They just make me ask “wait… who am I supposed to cheer for? The good guy or the bad guy?”.

Although I didn’t care for the ending choice, I still give you respect, James and would like to thankyou for giving us all something fantastic to watch everyday, this month.

  32. Sluice October 31, 2009 @ 5:05 am

    full victory

  33. Chie October 31, 2009 @ 5:12 am

It was an OK review, but I’ll admit I’m disappointed. Personally I hated this movie, I just thought it was dumb. In my eyes Zombie should stick to making music and spewing his metal style LSD drawings into stickers. I just didn’t care for any of his directorial efforts.

Despite that, it’s still all your opinion and your reviews are always fun. Cheers, and I can’t wait for next year.

  34. DawnOfRobby October 31, 2009 @ 5:19 am

    j.bruha knows how I feel.

  35. Sirius October 31, 2009 @ 5:27 am

  37. spacebeets October 31, 2009 @ 5:46 am

    bra-fucking-vo.

your free material is better than anything one could buy. someday (when times aren’t so tough) i’ll pick up all that you have available.

  38. rake October 31, 2009 @ 5:59 am

Devil’s Rejects hm? One of the few movies in the entire Monster Madness 2009 that I’ve actually seen. Interesting choice indeed.

  39. quilla October 31, 2009 @ 5:59 am

The intro was a bit of an anti-climax. I was at least expecting a brutal scream :(

Anyway, thanks so much for another monster madness with 31 days of joy. I really enjoy the way you review the movies. Can’t wait till next year!

  40. ThrowntoReality October 31, 2009 @ 6:08 am

No Silence of the Lambs or Saw? Please do them next year!!

  41. spengali74 October 31, 2009 @ 6:15 am

Hate to see the month end. I enjoyed Monster Madness 3. Keep up the great work guys!

  42. Gilster85 October 31, 2009 @ 6:24 am

I also enjoyed it! I wish James would bring out a new AVGN everyday for a month like Monster Madness.

  43. Filmmassacre October 31, 2009 @ 6:26 am

  53. Lazypug October 31, 2009 @ 7:43 am

These videos made this month go a whole lot faster. Also this is one of the few horror films I like this year

    1. 28 Days Later
    2. Rec.
    3. Paranormal Activity
    4. Devil’s Rejects

but 28 days later is by far the best of the decade IMHO

  54. Foxrain October 31, 2009 @ 7:45 am

Happy Halloween James and thanks for another exellent Mooooonsteeer Maaaaaaaaaadness^^ but shame on you that i have to buy so many movies now :D

happy halloween james, and thx for this great month full of good reviews ;)

  56. Slasher17 October 31, 2009 @ 7:56 am

Awesome! I love Rob Zombie’s movies! Thanks for the great reviews! Next year I hope you review FRIGHT NIGHT and NIGHT OF THE DEMONS! But lets finish this year first.

I would be interested to know what you think about the movie TRICK R TREAT(2009). Maybe you could put a review of it in your “Movie reviews” section???

  57. Slasher17 October 31, 2009 @ 7:58 am

Oh, I forgot… HAPPY HALLOWEEN to James and everyone else.

  58. fridenpaden October 31, 2009 @ 8:00 am

  59. Jel-K October 31, 2009 @ 8:03 am

thk you, you did a great job.

  60. BubbaHoTep October 31, 2009 @ 8:07 am

You know James, I would love to see you review some actual movies. I think so far this was an interesting horror year. It would be great to see reviews of:

    -DRAG ME TO HELL
    -JENNIFER’S BODY
    -ZOMBIELAND
    -PARANORMAL ACTIVITY
    -DEAD SNOW
    -THE BOX

  61. theCount October 31, 2009 @ 8:11 am

    haha^^
    awesome job james
    i always enjoy your videos
and thanks to you i was inspired for a horror movie night with my friends :D
and thank you for reviewing those movies, because here in germany i never hear of them, mainly because they were banned by the government

  62. thethirdman October 31, 2009 @ 8:16 am

    great monstermadness

  63. blargity October 31, 2009 @ 8:25 am

is that kid at 2:07 smiling when that clown told him he would kill his whole fucking family?

  64. krururaras October 31, 2009 @ 8:32 am

Happy Halloween to you too James and yeah this movie is pretty fucked up but thats just the way i like it :)

  65. Ithilgore October 31, 2009 @ 8:49 am

Great Monster Madness once again, fantastic job. i’d heard of a fair few of these movies, but I knew next to nothing about plenty of them, so thanks a lot for informing me about all these more obscure horror classics.

  66. Reel3presents October 31, 2009 @ 9:05 am

Thanks for the great reccomendations James. Your one of the only ones who holds on to Halloween! Cinemassacre is like the AA meetings of Halloween fanatics :)

I think this is the only one I tend to disagree with and I know I’m in the extreme minority when I say that I enjoyed House of 1000 corpses more then the Devil’s rejects. I think I saw the absurdity in House more then in this one but this was a few years back so it may be time to give both a second viewing.

  67. DeathBlow October 31, 2009 @ 9:09 am

I saw the Devil’s Rejects and I thought it was good, but I was so sickened by what the killers did that I felt disgusted that I sympathized with them at the end of the movie. It’s just unpleasant.

  68. Optics October 31, 2009 @ 9:31 am

    MMMMMMMMMMMMMMONSTER MADNESS

  69. Brakethroo October 31, 2009 @ 10:05 am

Umm, has everyone forgot about Trick R Treat? That was a great movie!

  70. alecsteven6 October 31, 2009 @ 10:09 am

Great Monster Madness this year around. I’m trying to catch some of the movies on TV. So far I’ve caught about 5 of this year’s, 6 of last year’s, and 4 of the year before’s. James, you really got me into the horror genre. I didn’t really like horror until you started your Monster Madness’s. Anyway, great Monster Madness, hope you do it again next October.

  71. pojut October 31, 2009 @ 10:12 am

The best Monster Madness month yet! Grats on a great job, James. Unexpected but excellent choice with The Devil’s Rejects…I ALMOST agree with everything you said, except for this: I rooted for the psychos the first time around. The guy trying to hunt them down was just a douchebag, and I spent much of the movie hoping that he bit the big one in the end.

    http://www.livingwithanerd.com

  72. cloob1 October 31, 2009 @ 10:23 am

    Is CMM over already? DAMN!

  73. juggernautakira October 31, 2009 @ 10:25 am

HORRIBLE conclusion. Picking a Rob Zombie movie to round out this year’s line up? God dammit. Rob Zombie needs to keep his crayons and scissors away from cinema. Jesus, James. Happy Halloween.

  74. ingloriousak47 October 31, 2009 @ 10:29 am

Its been a great monster madness this year thanks James, I prefer this type of horror films to the Godzilla kind but then again he’s a monster, you did reviews on horror films i was interested in but never new what they were about e.g. basketcase,re-animator and now i’m gonna watch them and you reviewed films that I loved like return of the living dead, leprechaun and hellraiser and theyre great reviews of them cause your the best at it, please do more horror next year it must be hard work doing these and I thank you because they rock, anyway thank you J and happy halloween everbody :)

  75. ZOhasarrived October 31, 2009 @ 10:44 am

Don’t really know why there’s so much hate for this movie / Rob Zombie. I thought it was great.

He’s just fulfilling his movie making dreams in conjunction with a homage to his love of horror.

Maybe you’re not a fan of his grotesque work, his movies, or his music but don’t hate. He’s not such a bad guy, he’s actually pretty damn cool and friendly. Check out an interview with him.

He’s made a career out of doing what he loves. He’s living a dream.

  76. Drew October 31, 2009 @ 10:53 am

Great job on MM, James! It was definitely informative and I’m going to check some of these films out.

Have you considered splicing all the episodes together into one video? That would be cool in case anyone wants to revisit all of your suggestions, and they would have them all in one place instead of in 31 videos.

  77. Bandaka October 31, 2009 @ 10:55 am

Would everyone just STFU about James’ choice for the final Monster MAdness reiview? It was a good movie damnit and scary as hell! For those of you who said that its not a true monster movie, these people were fucking monsters, they KILLED people bruttallly. What else constitutes for being a monster? Also whats up with people demanding James put out more AVGN videos right away? Its like wtf? He is not your slave to toil away and provide you with new AVGN videos every fucking minute just to entertain your ass! Damn you nerds!

  78. therandygoat October 31, 2009 @ 10:57 am

This year’s monster madness was all epic. A got some new favorites from it, most notably the invisible man, which was outstanding. I’m glad you touched on the fly and devils rejects, and especially freaks.

I must say, the thing you do is kinda like it’s own genre. You make everyone aware of old movies and make you feel like you’ve seen them and know them afterwards. That is why I like NC too, it’s like watching an entire movie in 20 minutes, just funnier. Concentrated sweetness. Can’t wait for next year!

  79. Mansondevil33 October 31, 2009 @ 11:07 am

Great ending to a great series. Hope to see you next October. Here is a list of some movies that you might consider for next years

(not in chronological order at all)

    The blob 1988
    Maniac
    Phantasm
    The fog
    The mist
    Ginger Snaps
Tales from the crypt double feature
    Tales from the crypt 1
    The ring
    The Omen
    The wicker man
    The Thing
    Carrie
    Invasion of the Body Snatchers
    The Sixth sense
    Cape Fear
    Sleepaway camp

Now I know with the abundance of movies I suggested seems like im demanding them but im not.

  80. gatti October 31, 2009 @ 11:09 am

Awesome Monster Madness this year James!

Thank you for a month of great entertainment and lots of movietips, me and some friends have watched about half the movies you reviewed and it’s been a blast! :D

    Happy Halloween!

  86. EricVierthaler92 October 31, 2009 @ 11:41 am

cant wait for next year james!

  87. BruderSeth October 31, 2009 @ 11:46 am

    REALLY Awesome!

I’m glad you didn’t choose “Saw” or “28 Days Later” as many here suggested.. because they BOTH sucks balls.. seriously, they are NOT well written and they are f****** boring!

  88. Henrik October 31, 2009 @ 11:48 am

Out of all the things you do, Monster Madness is probably my favorite.

I have (as good as vowed) to never watch a horror movie, and I shit my pants at just the thoughts of what little I have seen. Still, despite that, you make me want to go out and rent a whole bunch of them. It’s a really interesting look into a genre that I wouldn’t touch with a pair of fliers, and presented in an awesome format, sort of gives you something to look forward to every day.

So thank you, thank you, thank you. Keep up the good work and please let it return next year :D

  89. Extrema October 31, 2009 @ 11:52 am

Thanks so much James, it was awesome as always! Can’t believe it’s over already..

  90. therandygoat October 31, 2009 @ 11:57 am

Mansondevil33, if you check out Cinemassacre movie review, you’ll find something like 50’s alien movie remakes, in there several of the movies you requested are reviewed.

  91. RedRing October 31, 2009 @ 12:07 pm

Nice Month of Reviews. Yes this is a twisted movie indeed. I ended up not sympathizing with them in the end… but still was a little unnerved watching them being tortured. Still.. they got what they deserved.

If there is one remake that most people agree is very good it’s the Dawn of the Dead remake. Of course because the original was so good as well it’s easy to overlook, but this movie is still pretty frightening.

Oh, and I haven’t seen this movie, but next year maybe do “Sleepaway Camp”… if only for the ending!

  92. mylrtym October 31, 2009 @ 12:10 pm

Yo James, I’m real happy for you, Ima let you finish, but 28 Days Later is the definitive horror movie of the 2000’s. (IMHO)

  93. BruderSeth October 31, 2009 @ 12:25 pm

who let Kanye in here? :D

why is it that so much of you think that 28 Days Later is such a great movie?

    could someone please explain?

  94. sugreev2001 October 31, 2009 @ 12:27 pm

Happy Halloween,James.Another great celebration of horror movies ends this year, and I’m personally glad you included Hellraiser in this years list, which in my opinion is the scariest movie ever made.

  95. KoolKow October 31, 2009 @ 12:31 pm

i have one HUGE request for next year

REVIEW THE EXORSISM OF EMILY ROSE
THAT MOVIE IS SCARRY AS ALL HELL!!!!!!!!
MOST OF THE REASON IT IS SCARY IS BECAUSE IT REALLY HAPPENED
    <=( SCARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  96. freshkidjerez October 31, 2009 @ 12:40 pm

That sucks that you aren’t doing any more horror film review this your because last night I asked if you could do Freddy vs Jason, But oh well. If you somehow remember this comment please make this Freddy vs. Jaon the first horror movie video review you do for nexted year

  97. Mariusz69 October 31, 2009 @ 1:03 pm

Devil’s Rejects is a masterpiece! I saw it in the theater 3 times. It is somewhat similar to a great italian shock film “House at the Edge of the Park.” It doesn’t have the stylish coolness of DR, but it does have some sick scenes of kidnap/torture that would NEVER be shown in American films, even today. DR pushed the boundaries of sickness and I love Rob Zombie for that. Thanks for a great Monster Madness James.

  98. neszero October 31, 2009 @ 1:28 pm

james, thank you for making the halloween season a bit more exciting and nostalgic!

  99. Ash Williams October 31, 2009 @ 1:28 pm

    MOOOOOOOOONSTER MADNEESSSSSSS!!! XD

Thanks a lot James! great October with MM in it. Now, lets go trick or treat, i´m dressing up like Michael Myers, last year I was Jason Voorhees and scared a lot of children here near my house :D now, I will do the same but as Myers, HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!

  100. deanapalm October 31, 2009 @ 1:28 pm

I NEVER sympathized with the villains (yes, they’re villains) and I thought it was satisfying to see the sheriff get revenge in a way the villains deserved it. I never really liked movies that glorified hateful people in it, despite it being a well made movie for what it’s worth. But like Hostel, I only ever found it satisfying that the people actually GOT revenge for such atrocious acts against good people (well, good being a loose term, considering. Maybe “better” people? I dunno)

It’s a shame that when they DO die at the end, the movie glorifies them… I’ll never understand, and hopefully I never do. I’m a firm believer in good triumphing over evil. Call me old fashioned.

  101. jamesgwall October 31, 2009 @ 1:36 pm

Loved it again James, Thanks. Some good choices and bizarre ones.

Do one for Christmas if you have time, or at least a top 10.

  102. GigaMach October 31, 2009 @ 1:40 pm

31 days of informative, entertaining clips. Thanks, James Rolfe!

Full Disclosure: I am NOT a horror movie fan! But I am a fan of film in general, and the education was a blast. Having a new clip to watch every morning with my coffee was a treat. Happy Halloween everyone.

  103. Brenek October 31, 2009 @ 1:41 pm

Thank you James for another AWESOME October!!

  104. killswitch October 31, 2009 @ 1:54 pm

My favorite movie! Awesome list. Can’t wait until next year. Happy Halloween!

  105. psamathos October 31, 2009 @ 2:00 pm

You said there’s been nothing original since 2000, but what about Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead? It’s a horror/comedy/musical about a fast food chicken restaurant built above an ancient indian burial ground. It’s pure ridiculousness and so funny.

  106. Endless Mike October 31, 2009 @ 2:28 pm

:D Best costume award AND a new girlfriend!! See, that’s the magical spirit in all his works. Should be a Could-change-your-life-dramatically warning at the beginning^^ It was a great month of Monster Madness, thanx alot!!

  107. ReiKo October 31, 2009 @ 3:13 pm

    Great job James!

  108. RedRing October 31, 2009 @ 3:14 pm

    Deanapalm:

It’s not so much that they’re “glorifying” the villains, but rather humanizing them. Granted, they are sick and vicious humans, but the scariest thing is that you actually HAVE to see their human side, which is the real horror of the whole thing. They DID get what they deserved, but people have to understand that villains aren’t emotionless, they have human emotions and seeing them come out makes it so chilling. That awful feeling that you have when you laugh at one of their jokes, or even BEGIN to feel sorry for them is what Zombie was going for. It’s an uncomfortable feeling, but so is fear at times.

  109. mylrtym October 31, 2009 @ 3:22 pm

    @BruderSeth,

It’s just my opinion that 28 Days Later is a superior movie to Devil’s Rejects. James makes a good argument for The Devil’s Rejects but I just don’t agree that it’s the definitive example of a 2000′d era horror movie. It didn’t really set the tone for anything that followed, whereas I would argue that 28 Days Later had a huge influence on the genre throughout this decade. Granted a zombie apocalypse movie in itself is not new, however Danny Boyle took that genre and did a lot of new things with it and made a film that I consider to be a pinnacle of the genre. i know I’m going to get flamed huge for this but I think it surpasses Day of the Dead, remake and original. Anyway, that’s just my opinion for what it’s worth.

  110. joliet_jane October 31, 2009 @ 3:26 pm

    What a great video!

    It’s all over now. :’-(

  111. mylrtym October 31, 2009 @ 3:26 pm

oops, I meant Dawn of the Dead, remake and original. Did anyone see the Day of the Dead remake? I haven’t but it looked ridiculous. Zombies jumping 20 feet in the air and projectile vomiting?!? That’s pushing it.

  112. Fracassi October 31, 2009 @ 3:29 pm

Wow, I couldn’t disagree more. Rob Zombie movies are just plain awful. He simply uses every cliche possible and plasters it on celluloid. He steals way too much from Tarantino, but still ends up with hammy dialogue. I think any of the Grindhouse movies are far superior to this one (yeah, I know Zombie and Mosley make cameos). Just my opinion though. Not trying to start a flame war. I did want to say that as much as I hate remakes, I still think The Thing is a great remake.

  113. Fracassi October 31, 2009 @ 3:32 pm

And I concur with 28 Days Later being a defining movie of this decade.

  114. Fracassi October 31, 2009 @ 3:37 pm

More Chris Sarandon movies! Bordello, Nightmare, and Fright Night.

  115. Dan the fan October 31, 2009 @ 3:46 pm

This year Monster Madness was fucking badass, best one yet. In most cases I liked Jim’s review better than the movie being reviewed, plus this year he incorporated The Nerd, awesome!!

@ Fracassi, Totally agree about Rob Zombie.

  116. ReesiePuffs October 31, 2009 @ 4:07 pm

Great job, James! Can’t wait till next year!

  117. ReesiePuffs October 31, 2009 @ 4:08 pm

Btw, in regards to an earlier post, Iced Earth’s Horror Show album is my favorite album of all time. The songs are extremely true to the original movies.

  118. Slayer of 100 October 31, 2009 @ 4:25 pm

Wow, this month was amazing, some days I saw the clips before work and some others I was like: Fuck! I gotta get home it’s moooooooooonnssssssssterrr maadnessssss!!!!!!
    Just one thing: Critters! :(

Besides that, it was absolutely amazing, thanks a lot James.

    Cheers from Peru!

  119. blais October 31, 2009 @ 4:45 pm

I have just registered today but i have been a long time fan i this was an awesome year of monster madness. Great job James!!

  120. tonyaj420 October 31, 2009 @ 4:52 pm

Get MM this year James, October just flew by. I must agree Ken Foree and WIlliam Forsythe were great in D R. I never felt sorry for the killers at all. Wydell is NOT the same as them, what he did wasn’t for fun, it was out of love for his brother. As shown in his dream, George could not rest until his death was avenged. I believe after Wydell was done with them he could still be a sheriff and lead a normal life, knowing his brother was at peace. Also you should have at least mentioned Danny Trejo and DDP, they deserve a film of there own. Devil’s Rejects was good but Halloween is the best Zombie film IMO. Hope for Blair Witch and 28 Days Later next year!

  121. com85 October 31, 2009 @ 4:54 pm

thanks ALOT for all these great reviews James! love your work.

Next year i hope you include some John Carpenter flicks too =P

have a great holiday, cheers Sweden

  122. Ben_from_G-town October 31, 2009 @ 5:13 pm

Thanks for the all the awesome Monster Madness reviews! Ya’ got to love The Devil’s Rejects, as sick as it is. House of a 1000 Corpses was good too.

  123. friggatry October 31, 2009 @ 5:22 pm

This was a great one to end on. Thanks for doing these. It has been really fun watching them.

  124. superetjb October 31, 2009 @ 5:23 pm

I prefered the first film and never really got into the second, although I can understand why it stands out in the early part of the ’00s when most horror films were (bad and unorigianl) remakes. Why? Partly because it was not what I expected, having seen the first one and, partly, because what the serial killers (and the degree of hatred/humiliation/human violation) was just too disturbing to watch. Maybe if their had been a supternatural or philosophical element to it. Just my opinion. But these were all great reviews of horror film reviews (as in the years past), many took my back to my younger (VHS/cheaper movie ticket) days. Thanks for the memories! Have a Happy Halloween!

  125. Cyril ViXP October 31, 2009 @ 5:44 pm

    It’s interesting.
James, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I watch Monster Madness every day, and every movie you’ve reviewed is interesting. Keep making, if I’ll be alive – I’ll watch this stuff next year :) Happy HALLOWEEN!

  126. mrangrypants October 31, 2009 @ 6:13 pm

That kid was corpsing! Send for the man!

  127. Amanda October 31, 2009 @ 6:31 pm

Thanks for making yet another fantastic set of MM episodes James, I watched every single day, and have rented several of the films that I had not seen before (again!). I can’t wait for next year! Happy Halloween! :)

  128. rashktah October 31, 2009 @ 6:52 pm

Awesome month, James. I salute and bow to your work. Keep it up!

  129. Strathos October 31, 2009 @ 6:53 pm

Just passing by to say thanks for the excellent work. It was very entertaining and interesting! I loved the intro, too. Also, I watched the previous years MM and other of your work as Board James and the movie reviews and I’ve got to say that there’s a lot more to see that’s overshadowed by the AVGN series.

  130. tonyaj420 October 31, 2009 @ 6:55 pm

    LOL @ mrangrypants, botchmania rules

  131. Dax October 31, 2009 @ 6:58 pm

James thank you for another awesome Monstermadness, happy Halloween everybody.

  132. Vestner October 31, 2009 @ 7:13 pm

I, like many others who have posted feel the same. I loved officer Wydell, his character was perfect for hunting the 3 nutjobs. I also have to say that I totally disagree with you James. Wydell was in no way as maniacal as the rejects. What he did was out of revenge and for the love of his brother, and to get right down to it and be cliche, justice. They deserved everything they got. They are not human, any civilized human does not do the things the rejects do. Just because they wanted Ice Cream, doesn’t make them human.

But great job this year, some good flicks that I have checked out on this list (All the Karloff films, Basketcase and some others I haven’t seen in years.) I really loved the classics you reviewed, especially the Karloff greats and unknowns. Thanks alot James, keep it coming!

  133. nagi1980 October 31, 2009 @ 7:25 pm

Pretty good list this year. Dellamorte Dellamore is one of my absolute favourite movies. It’s brilliant. I’ll be sure to check out some of the movies that were mentioned that I haven’t seen yet.

My one regret is that I would have liked to see some movies mentioned that are genuinely scary, and not just violent/campy horror movies. Movies like Basketcase and Re-animator are great fun, but they’re not scary. If you ask me, they’re more gore movies than horror movies.

There have been made some really great European horror movies these last few years and I would have liked to have seen some of those on the list as well. Anybody interested in horror movies should check out stuff like The Devil’s Backbone, The Orphanage, Creep, 28 Weeks Later, Dog Soldiers, Eden Lake, The Descent, Let The Right One In, and Dead Snow.

  134. iselin90 October 31, 2009 @ 7:30 pm

good to see some movies that i haven’t heard and i dont like the ppl telling james wat to review its his website

  135. maikii October 31, 2009 @ 7:59 pm

Thanks for another great Monster Madness… but with this as your choice for the final movie of the month, especially since it’s Halloween… all I can do is quote Tim And Eric:

James, I love ya buddy, but… ya blew it. Capiche?

  136. Optics October 31, 2009 @ 9:23 pm

    Love monster madness

  137. Pauluk35 October 31, 2009 @ 10:03 pm

oooooooooooooooooooooh man. i was really unsure about this one to start with and i have seen house of 1000 corpses. Corpses is the wierdest horror film i have seen since the excorsist and i loved it, This looks as if 1000k had cork in the bottle and rob though right, that worked well, lest do some serious shit and go full throttle. This looks shit hot and going to get it. and james great work on another monster madness series, this time i watched one every day as they come out and no doubt ill be going over them again like i still do the other, awsome, keep up the good work

I know people send request and i know you must get bombared, but i would like you, if you can do til the aliens series, the games, would be intresting, because aliens is rare to find as in the original game based on the movie

  138. pyromcr October 31, 2009 @ 10:04 pm

Great job this year James! Sad to see it end. Cant wait for next year!!!

  144. Scary German Guy November 1, 2009 @ 8:00 am

I have to mention a great film from the 2000’s that’s REALLY worth watching if you’re a huge fan of the horror genre.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)

If you are at all a fan of Jason Vorhees, Michael Meyers or Freddy Krueger. You GOTTA see this one!

I don’t want to say too much about it but it’s extremely original, and actually very funny.

…and thanks for another great MONSTER MADNESS!

  145. Scary German Guy November 1, 2009 @ 8:12 am

oh I forgot to mention, its basically a Horror Mockumentary, told from the killers perspective.
It’s hilarious how he goes on and on about how dumb his victims are.
It’s done in a way that’s very clever and basically mocks how formulaic and cookie-cutter so many slasher films are.
Really worth taking a look at James, if you haven’t seen it!!! :D

  146. Sigurd November 1, 2009 @ 8:30 am

THANK YOU for this years monster madness. It was amazing, and I liked it when you took both obscure movies and well known movies. Also, it was cool that you focused on the 30’s and the 80’s.
I still think these reviews are DVD-able, you should release some kind of monster-madness dvd-set :D
Thank you for tiping me about so many awesome movies, some I’d never find if you didn’t talk about them!
The first snow has come to Norway now, I guess that was the halloween for this year.

  147. Awesome Gamer November 1, 2009 @ 10:08 am

Awesome Monster Madness this year, James! I’ll definitely be checking these movies out.

If I might be so bold as to suggest reviews for next year’s Monster Madness:

The Stand (1994 Stephen King miniseries)
    Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Dracula (1970s film starring Frank Langella)
    Children of the Corn
    Ju-On
    Ringu
    Blood: The Last Vampire
    Vampire Hunter D (1985)
    Van Helsing
    The Last Man on Earth
    Resident Evil

  148. D. Hay November 1, 2009 @ 10:22 am

Hey James. Been watching your videos and visiting this site for several months now, and I have to say it,… thank you for another year of Monster Madness!

Several months ago, I started gaining interest in horror through a couple of movies in the genre that grabbed my attention (mainly A Nightmare on Elm Street). When I discovered and saw the first Monster Madness whilst browsing YouTube, I was completely blown away by the videos due to the amount of fascinating information about the movies presented. Same goes for the way you reviewed them (that voice is very effective in getting one to view a movie that you’ve reviewed). After that, I began to appreciate your knowledge and nostalgia of the horror genre, past and present, and I decided to seek the movies featured for viewing (which I continue to do) and learn more about the genre.

This year’s MM just accelerated every bit of that. All the information behind the movies and how you reviewed them is splendidly amazing once more, and the choices were all neat, ranging from classics (King Kong), to movies I would’ve never heard of otherwise (Edison’s Frankenstein), to movies that were completely unexpected (Coffin Joe films, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2). From this, I’ve now organized a massive “wish-list” of horror films that I want to see, with a good number of them being ones that you have never reviewed before, which I hope to fulfill.

With all said and done, I too am sad that it’s over. However, I once again thank you for creating and entertaining us with another MM this year, which made for a fun October, and I also thank you for increasing my interest and knowledge of a genre that is sadly overlooked by many people. I hope you will do another one next year.

  149. Sigurd November 1, 2009 @ 11:33 am

    …AMEN, D. HAY!

  150. Sai November 1, 2009 @ 12:02 pm

Your movie reviews are always great, James. This Monster Madness was fascinating. I rented Freaks from Netflix because of your review, I’ll be watching it soon :P

  151. Pell November 1, 2009 @ 12:08 pm

Man, sometimes it feels like I get more of a hangover from Halloween than from New Year’s Eve. SO sad to see the ‘month of horror’ gone.

Can’t wait to see what kind of stuff pops up next, now that MM is over! Game, set, match…great work.

Terrific work this year man. I can honestly say I was waiting for a review of Basketcase since I heard you make a reference to it in one of the Nerd videos.

Keep up the great work man, can’t wait for next year.

  153. smb3 November 1, 2009 @ 1:54 pm

maybe u should do a cinemassacre box set whith all the nerd/bullshit/board james/mm/films. i know it would probly caust around 100$ but i would buy it.

  154. Theater November 1, 2009 @ 1:57 pm

Dude, i’m such a huge fan.
    Keep doing your thing man.

  155. As November 1, 2009 @ 2:52 pm

It is very sad, that there was no new vid today. I really got used to it.

    Thanks James, it was awesome.

  156. Verdska November 1, 2009 @ 3:09 pm

Yeah i got used to it too. I woke up, had breakfast, and i was willing to chill out with a coffee and a cigarrete while watching monster madness as i had been doing everyday and it was like: “Oh shit… no monster madness today…”

Damn James, that was some awesome work you pulled off this october, without counting the other awesome things you do. Thanks for everything!

    Cheers from Mexico!

  157. Red Devil November 1, 2009 @ 3:19 pm

I miss October already. Thanks James, for another great Monster Madness.

  158. SlyTF November 1, 2009 @ 4:12 pm

The sickest mother fucking movies this year in these vids looks like, Reanimator, Return of the living dead, basket case, andthis one. But cemetary man just looks fucking disturbing.

  159. Jugga Lylo November 1, 2009 @ 4:40 pm

Monster Madness was awesome again this year! While I agree that the horror output in the 00’s was anorexic at best there are far more superior films to review than The Devil’s Retards. May, Shaun of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, Mother of Tears, The Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police, Ichi the Killer, Mulberry Street, Inside, I could go on but I’m not trying to sound like a pretentious know-it-all jerkoff. I’m just a tad disappointed with the Devil’s Rejects. I thought it was a humorless rip-off of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. In fact I thought the same exact thing about House of 1,000 Corpses and with the introduction of the Sheriff Wydell character he had his Lefty Enright character to go along with his Leatherface character (Tiny) and his Chop Top character (Otis). Take out Baby and make Mama Firefly a guy and you got Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. As always I find your work to be awesome and in the case of The Devil’s Rejects, way more superior than the actual film you’re reviewing.

Crap! I forgot about Captain Spaulding. I know that his tasty fried chicken isn’t made of people but he’s totally the cook from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre so what I said about Mama Firefly is a mistake. Just get rid of her too! Ha! Ha!

hey James, any thoughts on doing Christmas movie reviews?

  168. IronMan19853 November 2, 2009 @ 1:00 am

I about busted a nut when I saw you were reviewing Devil’s Rejects. I was just watching it the other day and remembered how great it was. Watching Diamond Dallas Paige and Danny Trejo’s characters raid that whore house was classic.

Though I have a movie for you from this decade that I think deserves some recognition. “The Others” with Nicole Kidman. There was no blood guts or a whole lot of violence yet it was the only movie that literally scared me enough to make me jump out of my seat when I first saw it in theaters. It was pure atmosphere, which was what was so great about it. That and that twist at the end just made it one of the most original horror movies I’ve ever seen.

  169. varehouse November 2, 2009 @ 2:19 am

I just watched this movie day before you reviewed it :) .

  170. jazzman November 2, 2009 @ 4:03 am

This is the first time I followed the monster madness and I must say I really enjoyed it. You introduced me to some great new horror flicks. I thought it was a excellent choice to end it with Devil’s Rejects, that is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, Rob Zombie’s best work by far. I agree it was all about the characters, they really made this movie, some great performances all around…I hope you do it again next year, thanks for your reviews!

  171. especensor November 2, 2009 @ 6:34 am

  178. esebring555 November 3, 2009 @ 9:53 pm

I’m not a big horror movie fan, But I thought this movie was GREAT!!! and the ending is incredibly creepy and suspenseful!

  179. Biff November 3, 2009 @ 11:47 pm

My wife loaned this fucktard my Devils Reject dvd and I never got it back…now I’m going to have to re purchase it. The guy was a psycho and she stopped working at the place he did, so suffice to say we didn’t get the damn dvd back.

I’m still pissed about that, was like three years ago, lol.

  180. nathstein November 5, 2009 @ 5:33 pm

I would like to know why you didn’t mention Tiny he was one of the best. Although other than that it’s a good review next year review “House of a 1000 Corpses”.

  181. Filmmassacre November 6, 2009 @ 10:44 am

What movies is it on 4:20???

  182. mr.nik November 6, 2009 @ 12:05 pm

To all you people upset about the glorification of the villains:

Good and Evil are concepts instilled into you by religions such as Christianity. It is a very western thing to have a very black and white view of characters in movies like this because you have grown up in a society where that is hammered in to you. If you have ever watched a Japanese horror film, you may notice they focus more on supernatural occurances rather than tired old good guys bad guys. It makes people uncomfortable to see flawed protagonists, or protagonists that you cannot sympathise with. This is because you allow your morals to get in the way. James said that breaking this trend was great film-making. Well, it is in America I suppose. It’s not uncommon in some other cultures. James I would really love you to cover some world horror movies. Have you ever seen a Korean or Thai horror movie? I really am enjoying this retrospective on horror movies from 100 odd years of film, however I think it would be criminal to focus only on American films. Please consider doing some world films man, there’s some bone chilling fucked up shit out there that would not be allowed to screen in the US. I don’t need to tell you, you know it.

  183. insomnigamer November 6, 2009 @ 5:29 pm

Maybe I should give The Devil’s Rejects another chance; I was expecting a true sequel(and the movie did start out as one), and since it was so drastically different it was a letdown.

Seeing again with new eyes, so to speak, may help.

Still…an unforgettable moment: Brian Posehn getting his brains blown out early in the film, suddenly too. Damn. Talk about a cameo, although he was in it long enough to be more than a cameo appearance, wasn’t he?

  184. JonnyZweck November 6, 2009 @ 10:35 pm

Such a good month of movies mate, deadset PLEASE find time to squeeze in ‘RazorBack’ Next year!

  185. RottenPsycho November 10, 2009 @ 3:32 pm

  186. Andre The Wolf November 11, 2009 @ 11:36 pm

hey man…i was thinking that since you like old school efects why dont you make a series of reviews of japanese tokusatsus for christmas ???

  187. Salsa-Shark109 November 17, 2009 @ 11:44 pm

I’ve been watching the AVGN videos for about a week and I’m almost done with all of them. Haha. But, then I notice this genius does other stuff. Horror movie reviews, other hilarious things he makes outside of AVGN, and even his own films. Damn, that’s talent. But, when I saw his review of this movie I thought it would be something we would disagree on. As it turns out, we like the movie for reasons so similar it’s almost eerie.

Anyways, thanks for being such a bad ass.
