Taking a breath of air

November 1, 2009

That’s what I’m doing. Halloween has always been my favorite time of year, but it’s also the most exhausting. Cranking out a horror/monster movie review every day has been crazy, but all your comments on the site and emails have made it very much worthwhile. It’s great to know I’ve introduced many of you to these movies. Your comments have been fun to read and I’ve even taken note of some of your own recommendations that I haven’t seen.

For those expecting some kind of epic conclusion…. well nope, just another review. I would do more from the 2000’s, but I get most pleasure talking about the films which are less often discussed. So as for the last decade, I decided to just pick one. Maybe I’ll do more next time.

Aside from Monster Madness, I’ve been very busy celebrating Halloween. Now the candy’s gone, the jack-o’-lanterns are rotted to a smelly pulp, and the streets are covered in rain-soaked leaves. So what’s next?

Well November’s videos have been in the works. There will be some movie reviews on Spike, some other random Cinemassacre stuff, and AVGN wraps up the Castlevania marathon with parts 3 and 4 this month. That’s all I have to say for now, so check in soon.

  3. Todde November 2, 2009 @ 12:05 am

The marathons are awesome, and you deserve some rest now(though it doesn’t sound like you will be getting much)…

    Can’t wait for Castlevania part 3 :)

  6. The_Lethal_Injection November 2, 2009 @ 12:10 am

  7. jnywest November 2, 2009 @ 12:14 am

Sleep now. Rest. You’ve done well young warrior.

  8. JonnyB November 2, 2009 @ 12:15 am

James thanks alot for all your hard work. You did an awesome job with Monster Madness this year, and I’m glad you did. After monster madness 1 you said you wouldn’t do another, but you did so that is awesome.

You did infact introduce movies that I have never seen or heard of and thanks to Amazon I will soon catch those. Well hope you never lose the joy of making vids man your freaking awesome at it.

  9. prommac November 2, 2009 @ 12:19 am

James, you are actually my idol, because most guys just shit on their fans but not you. You actually care about your fans instead of just doing it for yourself, and you work very hard and that’s all that the fans ask for.

  10. leeroy418 November 2, 2009 @ 12:21 am

Now go rest our hero! =P Anyway can’t wait for your new castlevania reviews, I enjoyed your monster madnesses and how the voices for intro changed towards the end and got more creepy/mad scientist sounding. It’s great to see someone do so many things while even squeezing out a top 10 tales from the crypt…man that’s just great.

  11. Generation592 November 2, 2009 @ 12:22 am

I wish he did these movies, Tremors, Blood fest, rob zombies halloween, stage fright and black christmas

  12. You Can Just Walk Over It November 2, 2009 @ 12:22 am

Is this some kind of a joke? I’ve been Trick Or Treated like shit tonight!

  13. businesscasualgamer November 2, 2009 @ 12:25 am

I was never much of a “horror” fan but your reviews are awsome, and i’m going to netflix some of the ones that looked interesting. In your Castlevania review I did like the “fake” credits at the end of the game. i thought it was paying tribute to the horror films and actors. Anyway your site is was an absolute treat this month, and i will look forward to your future works. thank you.

  14. miles.z November 2, 2009 @ 12:30 am

Your monster madness single-handily made me interested in silent cinema, and horror movies in general. As a result I watched and enjoyed The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, White Zombie, The Night of the Living Dead, Edison’s Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera, and Nosferatu.
I’ve always been a film fanatic, but probably would have never had an interest in these movies until monster madness.
    Cheers.

  15. sirmastersephiroth November 2, 2009 @ 12:31 am

I was wondering if you ever slept! Thanks for all the hard work James. Now go to sleep. I’ll see you in your next AVGN video.

  16. sirmastersephiroth November 2, 2009 @ 12:32 am

By the way, I just added about 20 movies to my Netflix queque thanks to you!

  17. ClockworkHorror November 2, 2009 @ 12:40 am

You make some wicked media, James! October has been one helluva treat with a movie review to watch every day. Some of these flicks were a walk down memory lane, and some of them are now begging to be checked out.

There’s no need to say Keep it up, cause I’m sure you will.:)

  18. minjincorp November 2, 2009 @ 12:41 am

i cant say anything else but u rule james

  19. fafarian November 2, 2009 @ 12:42 am

As always, you’re doing an incredible job. You’re giving us your point of view about horror movies in the Monster madness, and you do it the way you like! You shouldn’t have to explain why you’re doing this and that, because that’s exactly what we want !

So, well, don’t stop your awesome work, take it easy, we’re really looking foward for the next AVGN video, and… thanks for sharing those movies with us !

  20. ChildrenofBodom November 2, 2009 @ 12:44 am

your next Castlevania review will feature not only my favorite Castlevania game but arguably my favorite game of all time, so i’m stoked for that. i wanted to thank you for introducing me to some of the earlier horror movies dating to the 1930’s. I managed to watch Bela Lugosi’s Dracula for the first time on Halloween and i greatly appreciated the movie when in the past i wouldn’t have appreciated such a film for not being in color or having the technology for special effects. so overall thank you for expanding my range of horror movies and i look forward to every new piece of work you bring to all of us.

  21. Mr. Arkadin November 2, 2009 @ 12:49 am

Thanks, James – it was fun seeing your new vids each day. Definitely something to look forward to.

You should post some movie commentary tracks some time. You’re too busy as it is, but they would be fun to listen to.

  22. uacjg1979 November 2, 2009 @ 12:53 am

Thank you so much for reviewing the Castlevania games and for 31 great horror movie reviews! Can’t wait for Castlevania 4 and Dracula X. Next year or anytime soon, you should review the Castlevania’s on Game Boy and Sega Genesis. Keep up the good work, you’re the NERD!!!

  23. Dr.Phil November 2, 2009 @ 12:55 am

I’m surprised you did as much as you did, good job

you should check out this D movie called “Born” it was so bad that it’s funny
It’s one of those movies where it’s so shitty that you’ll just laugh your ass off, though it’s better if you have a friend since it’s like 2.5hrs

  24. noobasaurus253 November 2, 2009 @ 12:59 am

You know what you should checkout? The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto, Robs latest work, with his hit and miss movies, this is a hit. Its a comedy, but, I dont know, you just need to watch it. Its on Youtube, if you want to find it.

  25. drunkmun November 2, 2009 @ 1:03 am

Good hustle! I liked the Monster Madness clips, pity there’ll be no more for a while. I would like to hear your thoughts on Captain N: The Game Master. I’m sure you remember that cartoon from way back when. It wasn’t the best if I can remember. Yeah, I’m pretty sure it stank! ah good times.

Looking forward to more AVGN! :)

  26. Darthmunky November 2, 2009 @ 1:09 am

Thanks a lot for all the hard work you put into these videos all month! The Monster Madness videos were often the highlight of my days, aha. So yeah, keep on making awesome entertainment, peace!

  27. JulietHudsonx November 2, 2009 @ 1:12 am

Thank you so much, James! Always been a big fan. I was REALLY expecting to see Eraserhead on here. Have you seen that? what are your thoughts? It’s such a mindfuck – it screams something you would love XD maybe next year? I hope so! Hope you had a happy halloween!

Thank you for putting so much effort out there for us little people :)

  28. PoeTrader November 2, 2009 @ 1:14 am

Two more Castlevania reviews, yay! Thanks so much for Monster Madness. My bf and I watched them all together each day and it was nice. Daily vids are a treat, but it’s understandable how exhausting they can be.

  29. Mr. Arkadin November 2, 2009 @ 1:19 am

  30. washedupgamer November 2, 2009 @ 1:24 am

Thanks for the Monster Madness this year James. I checked out Dracula for the first time (instant on Netflix if anyone is interested). It is amazing how simple yet effective movies of that era were.

  31. evilralphwiggum November 2, 2009 @ 1:29 am

I love watching Monster Madness : ) I like how you look at all the older horror films. Introduces me to a lot of films that I haven’t seen. I just watched 4 of the Hammer Dracula films this Halloween thanks to you! :D

  32. Bandaka November 2, 2009 @ 1:37 am

    Sleep fair prince.

  33. Sigurd November 2, 2009 @ 1:40 am

I think one of the best things about this years monster madness was that it appealed to both youth and older. For example I’m 17 years old, and I introduced this friend of mine – who is 58, and travels to England and Egypt every year (quite a movie buff too actually) – to these videos and he loved them! He thinks you have such a good and comfertable voice to listen too, and I agreed.

Take a good break, and come back with more cinemassacre awesomeness! I’m glad to hear that we fans haven’t dissapointed you!

  34. DraculusVulgaris November 2, 2009 @ 1:43 am

I know you work your ass off for everything that you do. I appreciate your work both in film and AVGN. take a rest that you deserve lol. Great job this year can’t wait til next year!

  35. coldex-II November 2, 2009 @ 1:46 am

thank you for all this work you do at Hween. aside from your videos i had nothing to look forward to all halloween. thanks for all these reviews.

i see you are into zombie flicks. i bet you have never heard of a Hammer Horror film called Plague of the Zombies. although boring, it is a fun and well acted movie.

  36. Dooickouski November 2, 2009 @ 1:46 am

Frankly I was happy that you were doing a review each day and I was amazed that you were able to do 2 nerd videos on top of all that, let alone ones with themes.
You’ve done a fantastic job this last month!

  37. ikey1555 November 2, 2009 @ 1:47 am

thanks watching Monster Madness every night was awsome.Reminded me of the awsome horror movies I watched growing up,.,.,Forgot that i like horror movies because of most of the shitty ones that have been relesed the last 10 years. thanks again cant wait till your next video

  38. StickySweater November 2, 2009 @ 1:51 am

I watched Horror of Dracula recently due to your suggestion. It was pretty good once they brought in Peter Cushing. Anyway, keep up the good work.

  39. Irish November 2, 2009 @ 2:02 am

i could watch something new of urs everyday

  40. cmonMan November 2, 2009 @ 2:04 am

Yeah, looking forward to Castlevania 3 & 4 – The first two videos have been great! :-)

btw: you know the movie Brainscan? I was surprised it didn’t show up in your marathon, even when it’s not so bloody like the rest you reviewed. ^^

  41. hermeslink555 November 2, 2009 @ 2:06 am

Hi James. Long time audience. first time commenting. I think you have introduced the world to a brilliant new style of humor ever since AVGN. I respect that you are also very dedicated to introducing younger and newer audiences to movies that count, but unfortunately more obscure. I think as long as there are people like you around, audiences bombarded by the formulaic, mediocre media can have a chance to witness movies/shows with more heart, mind and guts put into them. Anyway, I love your work and keep doing what you’re doing.
P.S. You have the most intriguing narrating voice ever.

  42. Andrew3WG November 2, 2009 @ 2:11 am

great work on the movie reviews, never knew those movies existed,

ive watched almost every video you’ve made and enjoy them a lot,

i have been into film making since i was 15, not till recently was i able to mess around with a newer working camera,

my friends and i started a YouTube channel and a website, though we are just getting started, check us out at

keep up the great work, looking forward to more videos

  43. Andrew3WG November 2, 2009 @ 2:16 am

WHOOPS! I JUST REALIZED I POSTED THE WRONG WEBSITE IT’S ACTUALLY

  44. Andrew3WG November 2, 2009 @ 2:19 am

I AM A COMPLETE IDIOT, SORRY FOR WASTING COMMENT SPACE, NOT TRYING TO BE FUNNY, I TYPO-ED YET AGAIN, THE ACTUAL NAME OF THE WEBSITE IS

  45. lansalot914 November 2, 2009 @ 2:23 am

    Hey James,

After you take your well deserved breath of fresh air: Are you going to do a review of “Trick ‘R Treat”? I think you should consider it because it’s definitely one of the newest and best horror movies I’ve seen.

  46. varehouse November 2, 2009 @ 2:28 am

Is there coming a avgn dvd vol 3?

  47. Reputator November 2, 2009 @ 2:39 am

Buddy, you are one workaholic. I can’t believe the amount of content you produce at the rate you produce it sometimes. And all of it is great. You’re gonna be big one day; your fanbase just keeps growing.

Don’t plug in your website, that’s rude.
Yeah, I know I just plugged in my site in as well, I apologize for that. That was childish. As for James, nice to see your still alive, did your house get teeped?

  51. kingatrock November 2, 2009 @ 3:09 am

I’m a huge fan of your work, all of it and I must say, I don’t know how you do it. I consider myself an amateur editor/video creator and I’m always stunned by how much work, projects, videos you constantly juggle. Your dedication to the work is inspiring to say the least.

I still watch old AVGN episodes almost every other day.

Thanks for all the content James.

  52. Sommer November 2, 2009 @ 3:09 am

You rock, James! You absolutely need a break, and I just wanted to thank you for working so hard to keep the fans entertained. I always get so excited when I see a new video posted, and I can’t wait to see more AVGN.

In the meantime, please get some rest and take a well-deserved breather, you deserve it! ;)

thank you for all that James, it’s great job!!

  55. tux November 2, 2009 @ 3:40 am

I hope you will read this post James. First, I would like to thank you for all those videos in October ! Very impressive work !

I was (re)watching the videos who did last year about your haunted house in your parents’ basement/garage. I can really relate to those because when I was younger, I also transformed a garage into an haunted house for Halloween.
On your last post about Halloween 2008, you said you did an haunted house, film it and was waiting for next Halloween (this year) to upload it online.
As an Halloween fan, I’m begging you; can you please upload it ? I waited one year to see it !

Where you told us about it:
    http://www.cinemassacre.com/new/?p=481

Take some rest; you really deserve it ! (And we need you in top shape if we want to see another special for Christmas !)

  56. f16134 November 2, 2009 @ 3:49 am

Thank you James for that October madness :)

  57. t.a.blomqvist November 2, 2009 @ 3:57 am

Thank you James for the great videos. How is the next AVGN DVD wrapping up? Xmas is coming and I hope santa would bring me your next DVD :) . Could you post something about that.

  58. mkasp316 November 2, 2009 @ 4:00 am

very nice update hope you get some rest you kicked some huge ass over this month go get drunk one night and have some fun you need it bro

  59. psamathos November 2, 2009 @ 4:29 am

Thanks for the hard work, James! I had a great month discovering all these horror movies. I actually just watched The Brain and Cemetery Man last night because I saw your reviews. I don’t know how you find these movies.

  60. guitarhero1000 November 2, 2009 @ 4:30 am

James! U rock bro. Rest well deserved!

  61. xdeathknightx November 2, 2009 @ 4:47 am

Thanks for doing it James! I got a big list of movies I want to see thanks to you so I got some horror goodness waiting for me :)
I hope you will do another run next year. Although I feel like the spread is wearing thin on the start of the horror cinema (30s, think you got just about everything that was interesting in that time) but still enough from the 60ies and 70ies and 80ies. Plus you could always decide to pick a few of the Hammer horror movies although you did a quick run-by of em in the first monster madness run.

But again thanks mate and rest up and I will see you at your next item!

  62. Linearmode November 2, 2009 @ 4:59 am

you work is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

  63. Skeletor November 2, 2009 @ 5:13 am

as a retro gamer this site brings many fine memories. And I really love the Castlevania review series so far. its one of my all times games series. I hope you will include the best game Castlevania: Symphony of the night.

Really love your Halloween marathon have watch many of the movies you recommended here. Really loved Return of the living dead can’t believe I missed that movie. I think you did right in not inlcuding the 2000’s horror movies because they suck and are always stupid remakes. The only good Remake I have seen is Dawn of the dead from 2004 it is really great except the zombie birth stuff which is just annoying.

Hope you had a scary halloween with alot of horror movies, parties and beer as I did. Can’t wait for part III of Castlevania medley. Keep the good work up man. By the way I think you should do some old tv-series stuff also like He-Man and other cool stuff. It kinda feels like kids these days aint having as fun as we did with all the great old stuff.

  64. PouKii November 2, 2009 @ 5:14 am

It was so great to wake up every morning with a fresh cinemassacre’s monster madness… I decide to organize a horror movie night for watching all the madness. btw, the movies where all classic shit Scanners, The Devil’s Rejects and one more recent REC. You gotta check out the original Spanish film, i’m also a survival horror player and that movie really is scaring. If theres is a monsters madness about movies from 2000, Rec is the shit.
    Thanks for this october madness!

  65. flyonthewall November 2, 2009 @ 5:50 am

Great job James!! Thank you for all!!!

  66. Tyron November 2, 2009 @ 6:09 am

    Take care man!

  70. bengibbard13 November 2, 2009 @ 6:54 am

you def deserve a break james, but i just wanted to say that coming from me, i love watching your videos, theres a very “home nostalgia” feeling to it.

A person like my self i always need to watch videos before bed or fall asleep to television of some sort, and i normally watch AVGN

cause there is nothing like hearing james rant about shitty old games that we all love/hate!

    keep it up good sir!

  71. Hampelinen November 2, 2009 @ 6:55 am

    (Sorry….had to do it) lol

  77. sith_lord November 2, 2009 @ 8:21 am

    Mr. Rolfe

i first see your AVGN reviews in gametrailer.com, Godzilla was the first one that i saw, it was superv, i enjoy it very much, im from Cd. Juarez Mexico and now i consider my self a big fan of your work, when i saw for the first time your official web site i liked very much your monster madness horror films reviews, since then i recommended your web site and your videos to all my friends( well just the ones that understands the english language) and now they are big fans of the AVGN, the review that you made of the nes rambo game its my personal favorite, enough of all this borings stuff that im telling you and lets get to the point, i will apreciate that you make a review of the game Rolling Thunder because when i was a kid i just throw the damm controller at the screen every time that i lost to this game believe me its a very annoying game but still its very good, thank you for taking the time to read my bullshit comment, and keep working hard, i cant wait for the thrid part of Castlevania Series.

  78. Bman54 November 2, 2009 @ 8:26 am

Good job on the Monster Madness! I would love to see some of the movies you talked about but I’m not very good with horror movies, as much as they intrigue me. I did see this one called Darkness Falls though that you should check out sometime.

  79. Reel3presents November 2, 2009 @ 8:29 am

Well deserved break James. Thanks for the great and hard work!

  80. JohanTW November 2, 2009 @ 8:39 am

Just keep up the good work James! Take as long a break as you need, we will still love you when you come back to do more AVGN reviews and entertain us like no one else has! =) Just don’t underestimate a good Board James episode, I really like them actually :P

  81. JohanTW November 2, 2009 @ 8:41 am

Forgot to mention that your Monster Madness reviews were awesome and it got me into some new movies. I particularly liked The Man They Could not Hang.

that’s awesome i remember the pumpkins rotting in my house on halloween it was disgusting had flies all over that shit…ugh…well anyways awesome monster madness i’ve watched george a romero movies because of your inspiration. and instead of taking the typical view i used to think about horror movies like cheesy dialog and why is the plot so dumb i looked at it at your perspective and thought wow look at all the dedication it took to make such fantastic zombie movies thanks for the insight james! also lookin forward to Castlevania part 3 and 4! :D

  90. Lotem November 2, 2009 @ 10:56 am

90% of the movies you reviewed I never heard of.
I just love your reviews James, keep it up. :)

  91. Shoeboogie November 2, 2009 @ 11:06 am

    Monster Madness was great. Thanks.

  92. Heep November 2, 2009 @ 11:06 am

Always enjoyed watching your videos. Also bought quite a few dvds based on your reviews! Today I`ll gonna watch King Kong the original one from 1933!

  93. LORDIGOR November 2, 2009 @ 11:09 am

TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED!! YOU, MY FRIEND, HAVE PRETTY MUCH SUMMED UP MY THOUGHTS ON MOST OF THE GAMES AND MOVIES YOU REVIEW. LONG LIVE THE NERD!! I WILL PATIENTLY AWAIT THE CONCLUSION TO THE CASTLEVANIA MARATHON, AS WELL AS ALL UPCOMING CINEMASSACRE REVIEWS AND VIDEOS!! TAKE A BREAK, GRAB A BREW AND CHILL!! YOU EARNED IT!

  94. Swedishguy November 2, 2009 @ 11:18 am

Great monster madness, got a lot to see. Next year do The Omen, Bad Taste and the Bergman horror, Hour of the Wolf(Vargtimmen).

  95. pepeattagpi November 2, 2009 @ 11:21 am

how bout doing a robot special next year… you could start with forbidden planet and end with the transformer. i mean you can put the terminator there or you know the cheesy ones like cosmos war of the planets. im telling you man its time for the robots to rule the world. (does robot monster count?)

  96. Amanda M. November 2, 2009 @ 11:21 am

I’m admittedly gonna miss Monster Madness now that October’s over (And yeah, it doesn’t help I’m still suffering from post-halloween blues. happens every year around this time. x3), but as they say, all good things must come to an end. At least ’til next year in this case, anyway. It was fun hearing your comments on horror films, none the less.

Either way enjoy the break, you definitely deserve it. And looking forward for everything to come. :)

  97. ScaryManiac November 2, 2009 @ 11:29 am

Thank you for this wonderful month, James. You did a wonderful work and I know it must have been very exausting for you. I apreciate it a lot.

  98. Sparky November 2, 2009 @ 11:42 am

  99. Pedro Feijó November 2, 2009 @ 12:02 pm

Great job this year! When I finished Monster Madness 2 all I could think was about when MM3 would hit, and know…can’t wait to see MM4!

Wish you success with you projects James, you deserve it!

  100. Kurvos November 2, 2009 @ 12:04 pm

You prefer to do reviews of movies less talked about, you say? That’s funny… because I personally prefer by far when someone reviews something I know very well about. I mean, I haven’t even checked all your reviews – I feel more joy of watching reviews of movies I have actually seen. I mean, I am curious about what you think of movies such as the Harry Potter movies, Lord of the Rings, the X-Men-movies, Jurassic Park 1-3, and for example more ingoing on all of the Friday the 13th movies.

But maybe this is just me – I don’t know. But hell, I love reviews. Especially when I know the movies in question. Same goes for videogames.

  101. Moshtank November 2, 2009 @ 12:29 pm

Iv’e loved the daily reviews and now i don’t know what i’m gonna do with out them lol
ive certainly got a new perspective on some of the horrorfilms that scared the shit out of me when i was younger and i might check em out one day
but for now im just looking forward to your next reviews
so thanks dude YOU ROCK!! \m/

ps. you Deserve a Breather after all your only human and youve gotta breathe man breathe coming up for air!… Im sorry got distracted there

  102. buff_drinklots November 2, 2009 @ 12:29 pm

    Congraturlation!!!
You have made many great reviews. And prooved the justice of our culture. Now go rest our hero!

  103. Slayer of 100 November 2, 2009 @ 12:30 pm

    Just a few words:
Thanks for all the awesome shit this october!
    Don’t forget CRITTERS next year!

Say hello to Motherfucker Mike for me, CHEERS!

  104. Bobosane November 2, 2009 @ 12:36 pm

Great job! Have been enjoying Monster Madness this October. Cheers from Denmark!

  105. GabrielMk3 November 2, 2009 @ 12:51 pm

Yeah! The Monster Madness this year was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

  106. chunkyboymania November 2, 2009 @ 12:55 pm

Cheers from England James (That sounded fairly 007)

I found this website due to AVGN as a games fan. I reckon I am rapidly becoming a horror fan due to MM as well. I have watched most of the films following your reviews and most enjoyed Dr Phibes (sequel was turd… really turd) and Basketcase.

I love your work mate and would love to contribute a title sequence for next years Monster Madness as I’m a graphic designer. Gives me a year to work on something epic anyway.

  107. deLahunt November 2, 2009 @ 12:57 pm

    Hey James,

Thanks for all those nice reviews, ive watched all of them with great pleasure. Even if ive never seen most of those movies, you are able to transmit all of the important contant in a very entertaining way.

    I like to suggest something:

How about a review of all your favourite (disney) cartoons, i think it is more then enough content to work with, also each one of us grew up with all those memories and like to watch them reviewed by you.

im a big fan, Keep up the good work james!!!

  108. Seth Gecko November 2, 2009 @ 1:05 pm

It’s been an awesome pleasure once more to watch your monster madness, most of the movies being the ones I grew up with (I’m 30), and I’m looking forward to every single new video that’s on the way. Thank you for making me looking forward to something every day in october!

  109. traxdater November 2, 2009 @ 1:46 pm

Reading your post made me realize I had never bothered to comment although I’ve been watching your videos for a few months, now. Shame.

I just wanted to say that the Monster Madnesses have been really cool, they made me discover a few great movies. Thanks a lot for doing that, and thanks for doing the AVGN too !

    Have a good rest.

  110. Yinyowhite November 2, 2009 @ 1:49 pm

    rest james.
it was a great month everyday at work watching your daily monster madness video.

hey james don’t forget your other sections like the bullshit man
    thanks for this great entertainment

  111. Dries November 2, 2009 @ 1:52 pm

ok thanks. Interesting new monster madness(es) by the way. I remember some movies like the basket case I have seen a long time ago but never knew the names of it. It’s cool to see them reviewed in here…

can’t wait to see the new castelvania reviews!

    Take care

  112. com85 November 2, 2009 @ 2:58 pm

    More Castlevania , sweet =)

  113. icehead November 2, 2009 @ 2:59 pm

You know, there’s one movie I was hoping to see a review of both this year and with the first Monster Madness that wasn’t there either time: Carrie. I dunno, maybe you can do a Stephen King-athon or something in the future. But wait, you already reviewed The Shining, didn’t you? But, well, you reviewed Simon’s Quest twice, so…

  114. wyldfox November 2, 2009 @ 3:15 pm

You deserve the break. We all need one after Halloween, but I think you need one most of all with those non-stop reviews. It was fun watching them though, and a couple I may have to see.

  115. Kuzco November 2, 2009 @ 3:55 pm

    You fucking rock!!!

  116. Cboy J-kins November 2, 2009 @ 4:20 pm

Great clips James. You totally would deserve to go trick or treat.

  117. Cyril ViXP November 2, 2009 @ 4:31 pm

Thanx James, I’ll be waiting for new great projects!

  118. CapnCanuck November 2, 2009 @ 4:51 pm

Great line up. As a horror movie enthusiast I really appreciated the exposure to some of the more obscure films. I really hope that Cinemassacre pays off for you and your family becuase of the effort you put in to your excellent productions. Cheers!

  119. nh2999 November 2, 2009 @ 4:53 pm

Awesome job James!I don’t like horror movies but because it’s you reviewing them it makes it worthwhile.
It was great to watch a new video every day!
Thank you for all the hard work. Can’t wait for new AVGN and the cinemassacre stuff.:)

  120. I_is_Batman November 2, 2009 @ 5:05 pm

  126. fierfly25 November 2, 2009 @ 5:47 pm

Awesome james! xD. I really enjoyed Monster Madness this year! Cant wait till the next one next year!

    Peace, From Canada!

  127. mattthecat November 2, 2009 @ 5:53 pm

I’ve loved the other stuff you’ve done too, but I get a lot more from your reviews and lists of movies, I think you’re a great “movie critic”

Do you know of Mark Kermode? He’s a IMO brilliant movie critic for BBC radio station Radio 5 and with seemingly very similar tastes.

  128. BlueFireStudios November 2, 2009 @ 5:54 pm

Congratulations James, Monster Madness 3 was a blast! I went and saw the Devil’s Rejects, great stuff. Thanks!

  129. Slunk November 2, 2009 @ 6:03 pm

I think a break is well deserved. Can’t wait to check out the next two Castlevania videos, it is my favorite series.

  130. pyromcr November 2, 2009 @ 6:24 pm

Awesome, sad that Monster Madness is done, but cant wait for new AVGN and maybe a few more Board James…

  131. smb3 November 2, 2009 @ 6:28 pm

what did u do for halloween? allso take a fucking vacation bro.

  132. GoldRoger November 2, 2009 @ 6:30 pm

Monster Madness 09 was terrific and terrifying !

I hope you’ve noticed the huge number of brazilian fans commenting on the Coffin Joe review, I think that video was the one with most feedback mostly because it was so unexpected, we never thought you knew about him.

Looking forward for next year, congratulations for keeping us entertained.

  133. angryrider November 2, 2009 @ 7:16 pm

Breathe as much as you want sir. Great Monster Madness this year.

At least you deserve to air Halloween specials in November.

  134. MorePAIN November 2, 2009 @ 8:01 pm

You are an inspiration to us all James. I finally got a job started today. I am proud to say I spent everyday of October as excited as I was on Xmas day opening gifts. Every morning I rushed to my pc to see what you had in store for us and you my friend do some great work. Keep it up! Remember Lionel Richie’s midget for next year’s Monster Madness. I hope you know what I am talking about lol!

  135. z0mbiew0lf108 November 2, 2009 @ 8:11 pm

Your movie reviews have definitely caused me to branch out and now I’m the one among my friends that always has to pick the horror movies for parties :D

I recently saw the Blair Witch Project (which I think is perfect to watch around this time of year), and although it was nothing spectacular, the ending ate at me for weeks. The journal they posted on the official movie site was a nice touch and really got me involved with the characters. Anyways, I’m curious what you thought about it.

Also, Saw 6 sucked. The first few were good because they had one or two characters they would flesh out during the movie, but now it seems it’s degenerated into slasher territory. Thank god I didn’t pay to see it.

  136. matticusfinch1820 November 2, 2009 @ 9:03 pm

this is the only thing i have to look forward to during halloweeen. Monster madness is always a great trip down memory lane! Great job as always James. Im a big fan of your work!

  137. Narpicho November 2, 2009 @ 9:28 pm

Thank you very much for all your work!
I’m always looking forward to your videos.

    V.

  138. Brinkman November 2, 2009 @ 9:28 pm

Great Job James. I awaited each clip every day. It was nice seeing some I already knew along with ones that you opened my eyes to.

Please keep up the videos, they are wonderful.

    -John

  139. MetalSavage November 2, 2009 @ 10:07 pm

here’s a movie you need to review for next year or anytime you want… “Phantasm”. I have never seen phantasm the first of the series but i have seen the sequal and boy is it sure weird like i understand the film but it does look pretty creepy so i like some information about it like maybe your thoughts/opinion or review on it. Cause I believe it would be a good movie to review for Monster Madness.

  140. neoangelwink November 2, 2009 @ 10:34 pm

good work ^_^ and yeahee for a good Halloween, i did not watch them all i get scared of movie like that. but one did watch great job ^_^

  147. jaredSR388 November 3, 2009 @ 2:04 am

you know i didnt know you could be a member of this site till i wanted to leave a comment just now. but iv been following your videos for years. they keep me entertained and theyv inspired and informed my brother in his already present dream to be a film maker.
you are a true pop culture nerd, and i have amazing respect for you. youv informed me so much on what i havnt known about my own generation and generations before me while making me appreciate what i DO remember even more :D

    so thank you.
and keep up the good work.

  148. StandingCow November 3, 2009 @ 4:00 am

  153. diegowar November 3, 2009 @ 12:10 pm

Two more AVGN videos + a movie review ?
    That’s what you call a break ?
It’d take me so many hours to do only one review, so don’t be so humble :)

  154. hordman75 November 3, 2009 @ 12:18 pm

Take some time off hopefully youll come back 100% and well have the old ( nes tmnt )foul mouth james that we all love. Ive been noticing in some of your videos you have been looking tired latley.

AVGN, why not review the bad Contra games in the series:
    Contra Force
    Contra Adventure
    Contra: Legacy of War

And also Snake’s Revenge (of Metal Gear series).

  161. Radoslav November 3, 2009 @ 3:51 pm

  168. Edrahvalis November 3, 2009 @ 5:36 pm

    Hello James,

I’ve never commented on cinemassacre before, but I have been a daily visitor since I first heard of you almost two years ago.

I would first off like to thank you for the many hours of entertainment you have provided, but even more so I want to thank you for proving and demonstrating to me that one guy (with a little help from his friends) can produce highly entertaining content that in many cases trumps what is put out by much larger studios. I mean it quite honestly that you have re-kindled my long neglected interest in media/art production. You’re doing a fantastic job, and to me your continued success seems inevitable. You’ve got at least one viewer for life right here.

    -Eric

P.s. This is gonna seem really random… While distance pretty much prohibits this, should you ever decide to make another horror movie and want to do a dismemberment scene or something, I am a double amputee with prosthetic legs and would gladly offer my unique “skills.” If nothing else, it’s a cheap special effect, hah.

  169. dubberman420 November 3, 2009 @ 5:43 pm

That’ll do Nerd, that’ll do. Sadly though on the 1st on November i actually looked for another video lol Though i must say, i’ve got Devils rejects and tbh it bored me. Il give it another shot but im just into a different horror i guess.

  170. dubberman420 November 3, 2009 @ 5:45 pm

    @ Edrahvalis

I gotta tell you something. You are epic. If i ever meet you i will buy you a pint :P Good lad.

  171. Tuska November 3, 2009 @ 6:51 pm

James I am following you since a year and all I have to say is “When I win a jackpot or get somehow rich the first thing I would do is to give you all my money to see what awesome masterpiece you’ld create.

Thanks to you and your team for expanding my horizon.

  172. Embe November 3, 2009 @ 7:15 pm

I finally made a wordpress account so that I can thank you, James, for all of your videos. Your marathons are very addicting and your reviews make me interested in old movies about which I never ever thought I would even care a tiny bit. Thanks James!

  173. jokkomon November 3, 2009 @ 8:05 pm

well deserved man. Really awesome job on the madness! ;D

  174. Lil-Bastard November 3, 2009 @ 8:28 pm

  175. Skorpion November 3, 2009 @ 8:47 pm

Great job with the monster madness James.

    Shit was so epic.

  176. CarlosEspinosa November 3, 2009 @ 9:42 pm

    It´s a much deserved break.
I have to say that thanks to you, your movies and your reviews i´ve learned to apreciate cinematography in a way i did not before.
Thank you James. Keep up the good work.

  177. Reaper2113 November 3, 2009 @ 11:08 pm

Keep up the great work James! Excellent job and you have great taste. I like the less exposed/nostolgia films to the concurrent bloodpath films of the past decade (besides there only a few worth mentioning). Can’t wait for Super Castlevania IV and Symphany of The Night (my two personal favorite CV games besides the original). Please shred the any post SOTN games because they were shitty and pathetic. Happy Samhain!

  178. itscmillertime November 3, 2009 @ 11:11 pm

Hey dude, i loved monster madness. It must really take a lot of work to put all those clips and reviews together. Here’s one you’ve probably (and hopefully) not seen because its so bad. Killjoy…. it’s about a drug selling clown who kills people. I believe he is summoned by some sort of voodoo curse to boot. with a 1.9 rating on IMDB you know it is one shitload of fuck of a horror flick if you can even call it that. Hope you check it out, even if you don’t end up reviewing it. I think you’ll appreciate how bad it is. I know i did when i discovered it back in high school. Got damn it was bad!

  179. Hero9651 November 3, 2009 @ 11:16 pm

good, you are really going to need it after all those cool mivie reviews. Hope you have more next year.

  180. navnav161 November 4, 2009 @ 12:52 am

good for you james you deserve a break.

  181. Goner November 4, 2009 @ 1:14 am

Hello, this is my first post on this website

i recently went throughall the monster madness videos on this site and loved watching them all, i managed to watch a couple of the films after my interest in them grew from watching the videos on this site. i managed to see basketcase off youtube and i saw both psycho and the thing from another world which was on abc2 the other day and loved them all, although basketcase was a bit over the top near the end (you know what im talking about ;P)

anyways i thought id recomend a film which i thought would be good for next years Monster Madness (which i hope youll do), a friend of mine recomended me a spanish horror film titled [REC], it was remade into a garbage film by holywood titled quarantine, the film is in first person and focuses around a female film journalist whom follows the firebrigade at night to see what they do during emergencies, they come upon an apartment which is were the shit finally hits the fan, i wont tell you much more but the film is a zombie film at its finest. its one of the few films which actually left me worried after seeing it, the ending left me speechless. being in first person, its as if you were actually there :D

well thats my two cents thank you for all the effort put into your monster madness videos, i wish more sites would do features like this

oh and perhaps you should also put in “the host” i know you have seen this film, since it was no 10 in one of your top 10 monster films feature it features an actual monster you know :)

Hi there. Just realised that I’ve been watching your videos for an awfully long time without recognising your great efforts one single time, that’s horrible.

So, thank you for all your hard work, in my opinion you’re one of the greatest movie reviewers out there. You pick out interesting things from the movies and you know what you’re talking about. I never liked horror movies until I saw your reviews, now I need to catch up :) Of course, your own creations is great entertainment too.

    Thankfully, Cuddles

Keep up the great work. Your reviews are always great and those little segments probably took hours of work to do so get them much deserved rest.

Dammit James, get back to work, I need my AVGN! I’m like a crack addict here!

  192. the_mess November 4, 2009 @ 4:22 pm

You deserve a break, James! Thank you for all those highly entertaining videos. That may be not your job but it seems like it is sometimes, seeing the number of videos that you make for such periods of time.
I am looking forward to see the new Castlevania videos which I do not have a lot of patience to wait, but will have to – they’ll be awesome! Just by watching the first videos I got hiped and started playing the first one on the PC by emulator and the psp version…. on the psp!
I have a great respect for you! Wish you luck and keep up the good work! Hope you had a lot of fun on Halloween!
Greetings from Bulgaria! Sorry for the bad english!

    @ cdentler

Wow what an asshole! If you are reffering to the ebay auctions, no one forced people to buy his stuff. In fact, no one is forcing you to come to this site, so if you dont like the fact he makes more money than you, there is a nice X in the top right of your sreen. Press it.

  194. RIchardAlexander November 4, 2009 @ 7:23 pm

    @ cdentler

Wow. Your an asshole. I bet if you ever met him face to face you wouldn’t say what you just did. Think before you act…it works even on the internet. Also, just because you have anonymity you should show respect to anyone you talk to in life, because what you just did was pathetic.

Go make another account now and try and fit in again, but it’s too bad that our IP’s will be displayed to Cinemassacre on the site with our name. So in the end, you will just be lying to yourself.

    @Blitz3r

i love that comment u said to cdentler it made my day

  197. mastermind22 November 4, 2009 @ 8:07 pm

Don’t pay attention to CDENTLER, he’s just a troll.

Anyway you deserve your rest James after the fun you gave us

  198. mastermind22 November 4, 2009 @ 8:14 pm

And thank you for another good year of MM

  199. fafarian November 4, 2009 @ 8:15 pm

Woah calm down. It just looks like someone who wanted to do some ironical joke, that’s all. And if it’s not, take it as if it was. I mean, the message just above the other one says to return to work too, with only a more obvious kind of humour. I think if anyone is on Cinemassacre.com, it’s because he enjoys James work, and like him. For myself, I watch around 5 videos per day, even if I know them all by heart !!! Oh and one more thing. Almost every fan of AVGN would know that next videos are already made and about to come on the website even if James is away, so what’s the point at all ? It’s even more obvious that it was humour.

Anyway that was my two cents ! I hope that James will continue his work for years to come. Cinemassacre.com is for having fun, never forget that my friends !

  201. notdeadlikeyousaid November 4, 2009 @ 8:52 pm

i really would love too know what you thought of paranormal activity james.

  202. Superjay45 November 4, 2009 @ 9:43 pm

paranormal activity sucked i don’t care what anybody says, how do people think its scary the last part was sort of shocking but the rest was just cheap effects and cursing I really hate how the majority love that movie

  203. ZeFlyGuy November 4, 2009 @ 11:34 pm

A well deserved rest. Good Job James!

  204. Evans November 4, 2009 @ 11:37 pm

You deserve it. Can’t wait for new stuff!

  205. terminegen November 5, 2009 @ 7:56 pm

    …Contra…

  206. loomp November 6, 2009 @ 4:55 pm

Super Castlevania is last great Castlevania game, and yes it’s a remake of Castlevania 1 according to The Castlevania Dungeon(I don’t like Symphony of the Night since it too much like Castlevania 2 much like current Castlevania games)I don’t own Super Castlevania anymore for my SNES but I play it on the Wii with the SNES Retroport adapter(for SNES controllers)from Retrozone’s website, check it out.I hated the N64,thus I got a Playstion, but I did play Castlevania 64 later and to use the Mandragora and Nitro you have to press Right C at the wall in the correct spot(it does not matter what you collect first)Most items work this way in the game,Castlevania Legacy of Darkness is the complete game and Castlevania 64 is the rushed imcomplete one,but an Expansion Pak is needed for LOD.

  207. insomnigamer November 6, 2009 @ 5:12 pm

Thanks again, James for helping make the Halloween season memorable and fun.

  208. aaron2140p November 7, 2009 @ 1:38 am

Hey,James,Nice work on the movie reviews,I always enjoy seeing you makethem. I have a movie i’d like you to try to review, but i wont bother,as i know your busy.

Keep up the good work james.

  209. arctifox November 7, 2009 @ 11:16 am

I was hoping you’ll review the 1986 remake of The Fly. To think of it, you haven’t reviewed The Thing or any other of the Cornenberg’s movies either. Not a big fan of “body horror”, eh?))) I’m not blaming you, cause it’s really freakin’ gross)))

  210. carellie25 November 8, 2009 @ 12:39 am

dude all your reviews are awesome

  211. loomp November 9, 2009 @ 8:45 am

Its a well dissevered rest considering X-mas is coming up and I think you have run out of Bible games so what going to happen this year.Anyway maybe you should take a trip down my home state of Louisiana for Mardi Gras to relax and maybe do a review of The Adventures of Bayou Billy and at the end I know the deepest darkest bayou you can trow that game in,or at least feed it to an alligator, but then again I’d feel sorry for alligator.
