I can’t get over how you pronounce ‘Friday’. But not being a native speaker, who am I to judge?
Thumps up for the review, exactly what I thought after the movie.
yeah i saw this opening night and it was so-so. Good review without spoiling. By the way i was just wondering when the new AVGN is coming out. Ill keep checking every 2 hours or so.
AVGN videos have been released practically every Tuesday night, either two or three weeks apart, for quite a while, excluding any random video to coincide with a new movie coming out (I think the Indiana Jones video came out less than a week after the last one).
Checking every 2 hours for a new video is a funny thought though.
Yo James, you pretty much nailed all my thoughts on this movie. It was so by-the-numbers it was ridiculous. I mean, I understand you have to follow some conventions to be a slasher film, but it offered absolutely nothing new. The ending was atrocious, too.
I’m actually debating this flick over on Fark right now and some people are saying, “Well, what did you expect? It’s Jason.” It’s almost like they’re saying it could be a lazy movie just because of what it is. I wasn’t expecting high art, but this was a huge disappointment.
Wow… Honestly, as much as it pains me I really have to really disagree.
I was so very impressed and thrilled with it. I saw it and thought it was a complete improvement to all of the series’s major flaws over the years and even a few of the flaws from the beginning as well.
What I mean by that, is that I always wanted to see a remake with better atmosphere, and a better story that brought together all of the best from the first 3 films, instead of it having to go through 3 entire movies to really get to the point of who Jason is and what he was, before the series got to the end of 4.
I loved not only that, but the return to a gritty, darker, version of Jason’s best from the original 3 films.
I sorta expected, i guess, more of a mention about the films great points. Like the better use of a creepy camp atmosphere, the way they got the kids right on (That stoner asian kid was HILARIOUS and definitely had the best lines in the movie), and the far better, extended gore compared to the originals. When the MPAA would only leave 4 frames and here you’d get to see several minutes of dying, and the great performance of Jason that seemed like a classic nod back to all of the past performances.
I think I really loved it so much because I went to this basically expecting it to be a “Best Of Jason” compilation remade for today. And that I not only didn’t expect anythin new, but I really wanted it to be the same old thin with a new polish, which I was actually really happy about.
I was absolutely pleased that it was everything that it needed to be, with subtle improvements, and tightening up a series (that I thought was always guilty for dragging its feet and taking too long to establish so many things about Jason through the first 3), with a tightened up pace, and a gritter, polished, creepier feel.
In actuality, I was hoping that they wouldn’t mess too much with it, but just improve and refine a formula that was already there, while giving every nod back to the fans with every homage they could, both subtle and some.. not so subtle. And I left the theater actually VERY happy that they did just that.
And that there was no CGI, and that it was back to good old fashioned practical effects with the kills.. which I have to say, were so gritty and visceral, and more real feeling, that they felt better.
I liked the homages and throwbacks to things such as the lights coming on from part 1, noticing some of the recreation of sets from the original’s archery range, and how they cleverly worked in a subplot that was reminiscent of Ginny’s predicament from part 2.
I loved how it showed Jason’s progression all in one film instead of wading through 3 long films to see it, which always felt too long to me, and to see the formula redefined and perfected with a creepier atmosphere, and a new , gritter, but professional look at the same time.
Also, I also loved the ending. I, saw it coming a mile away, to be sure… But actually.. i saw it as a way of coming full circle as it was, sort of a re-worked and recreated shot, paying homage to a famous “moment”.
I just felt like they really set out to stay true to the formula and please the fans by remaking parts 1, 2, and 3, with a lot of winks and nods to the fans.
My reaction actually was that I felt pleased, that it was exactly what I expected, but more of a “Jason’s Best Hits” collection with a polished look and a new subplot that kept it feeling original.
So, actually.. I have to say I was left with a much different feeling.
I do agree that this was a remake that needed to be done, but I also thought when I was done watching that this was exactly how remakes should be done.
By not fixing what wasn’t broken. not re-writing it from scratch to be all different. But just tightened up and polished.
Interestingly enough, I honestly assumed that Friday the 13th fans since the original would be talkink about how a remake was finally done right. I just thought that it’s impossible to screw up Jason, and that they did him justice. I also felt that Derek Mears did the role more than justice and was the best guy since Kane.
Shocked as I am to hear people actually disappointed, that they didn’t completely change everything about Friday the 13 different, when they made the Halloween remake REALLY different and everyone hated that.
My honest impression was that this succeeded where other remakes usually fail, and felt really pleased by it. The ending may have been predictable, but it was a throwback to it’s roots, so I couldn’t hate it for that.
I just am really surprised that people weren’t saying “Finally they made a perfect remake” and “They got what worked and polished it up better”. The ending was predictable, but a throwback to “the classic moment”, and I actually cheered it.
I wanted a simply fun movie, and just hoped they didn’t mess Jason up, and I was surprised that both he was played great, and that the film was both dark, creepy, bloody, funny, and gritty.
The theater I was at, also had a few people clapping when it was over, strangely enough. *shrug*
Sorry, no new Nerd this week. I’m not sure exactly when. We’re busy renewing the contract with GameTrailers which happens every February. Besides, it’s good for me, personally, because I’m trying to work on other projects and this gives me time to get caught up with the new Nerd episodes. They’re coming along great, so don’t worry, it’ll be back on track soon enough. Keep checking in for other videos though. I still have plenty of things to post.
Also wanted to add, I was glad they didn’t add any bullshit backstory to Jason. The whole prequel thing is getting tiring. Maybe they learned from the Halloween remake.
Yeah, it is indeed a classic style Jason flick, not much to expect, but it doesn’t offer anything new at all.
I cant believe you didnt make any reference on Jared Padalecki being a professional Monster Hunter in Supernatural (where he is teaming up with Jensen Ackles, who will also star in a Slasher Remake – My Bloody Valentine).
But its always nice to see something new from you, and your short reviews ofMovies that came recently out are always pretty much straight forward, so i didnt really expect that fact to come up. Dont understand that as criticism, your short reviews work well the way you do them. Its just me being a fan of supernatural.
Sorry for the really long post, and I also apologize for repeating some points in different ways.
I actually meant to go back over and replace paragraphs and sentances with other ones that I thought sounded better, but instead I ended up making some points two or even three times in different ways.
I also didn’t mean to sound so defensive (if it came out that way). I can tell James liked some things and thought other things weren’t that good. Everyone has different reactions to things.
I really think James’s review was quite well stated, although i think there was a lot of good points about the movie that could have been mentioned as well.
The lighting and mood of the movie, and how the camp was so much more rundown and creepy. I loved how Mears did so many little gestures pulled from the past, and was really physical. As a fan who was somewhat apprehensive to another new actor, I definitely would welcome him back into the role, anytime.
And I even have to thank the MPAA. I was scared that i’d just see trickles of blood, and mere frames of practical effects and the rest would be cut for the MPAA just like in the past. So the MPAA was reasonably kind to this movie, thank god. That, i kinda thought made it at least half worthwhile.
Hopefully in the next one, Jason will start squeezing some heads to a pulp. I did miss that one, I admit.
Hey James! (Long time watcher, first time poster)
Thanks for the review…I was thinking about seeing this but I think I’m going to pass now. I’ll spend my money for something better, going to the movies is WAY to expensive now-a-days.
i thought the movie was awful. I liked the intro but everything after that just went downhill. They added stuff too that didn’t make any sense and didn’t add any depth to the movie at all. Now i know ‘jason’ movies have never had any depth to them for the most part but why hint at things if your not going to go deeper into it. the parts im talking about are when clay goes to the old ladies house and what she mentions and also with the police. How the hell did they not find any evidence, its like they didn’t even investigate cause they already knew what happened, like some town conspiracy. Also with the guy at the gas station who wouldnt let him put up the sign. oh well, i shouldnt think too much into it cause i know the screenwriters and director sure as hell werent. The deaths were weak as hell and the only one that was semi neat has already been done in completely better fashion in ’silent night deadly night’ if youve seen the movie youll know which one im talking about. The best ‘new’ slasher film thats out is Hatchet. That movie effing rules, i can’t wait for part 2. Also, i bought ‘His Name Was Jason.’ It didnt really let me in on anything i didnt already know about the series but it was still fun to watch. I need to watch the rest of the bonus features though. That’s really cool that they gave you your own little section on the dvd, hopefully it brings in alot more fans for you. Take Care and keep up the great work!!
yo james, you forgot to mention that the only thing new about jason is that in this film he runs, unlike the previous ft13th films he just walks but here he runs and alot smarter. though i would rate the movie 3.5/5 about higher than average, in other words i enjoyed it, it wasn’t too bad and it wasn’t too good either but abit higher than average i would say. and i disagree when you mentioned there wasn’t any memorable kills, although your mostly right about that but i remember seeing him threw the axe to one of his victims, i don’t think i ever recall him throwing an axe on his victims ever and still makes the target.
I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m not very excited to see it judging by the trailers. I’m sick of the way these newer horror movies portray teenagers.
On top of that, I wasn’t a real big fan of the original because the last quarter or so of the movie was too dark to make out anything. And there is nothing left to do but become bored. If not for that, it would have been decent.
*I didn’t even know they are going to remake the nightmare on elm st. Now there is a great original movie. There is no way the remake can top that.
“yo james, you forgot to mention that the only thing new about jason is that in this film he runs”
He ran in Part 2 and a little in 3, actually. And since it’s a remake of that time period before Jason became a “zombie”, it makes sense.
And I really thought the kills were generall nice and not weak at all. They really felt like… ow. You see them and they just feel more painful.
I gota say that I am one of those people that really didn’t want to see it over-the-top. That would have made the movie silly like the later sequels. And they were going for the tone of the first 3, here. Which, again, I thought they really accomplished very well.
I think people gotta remember that this is a “remake”, and as such, defined by that, it’s them “redoing” the first 3 films into one, and the first 3 all had kills very much like these. I didn’t think they were lame at all.
The screwdriver (or whatever that was) through the chin was AWESOME and brutal (and went on for like, a minute and a half!), and I distinctly remember someone a few rows behind me in the theater yelled out “DAAAAMN!” when the arrow through the head came in.
They didn’t try to fix it or “outdo” the original. They just took what was expected and spruced it up, and made it better.
I look at this movie this way…
I compare this to “Super Mario All-Stars” for SNES.
It was a “Jason Compilation” of 1-3, with an improved presentation (Like how those games were classic Mario with SNES graphics), and I was satisfied that it felt very Friday the 13th-ish and didn’t try to go crazy-go-nuts. That was a big problem with the later sequels, as I saw it.
I think when one looks at this film like Super Mario All-stars or something, I think it starts to look better. That’s really what they were going for, and I honestly think they did a near perfect job worth making a perfect remake.
That’s just my opinion, I know, but I just loved the way they did it. I just felt happy, leaving he theater, feeling as if they clearly had respect for the franchise.
Why re-invent the wheel into a square or a triangle, when you can just keep it the same but make the axels turn better?
I felt this movie fell short of everything; Kills, Actors and etc. Tho, the auidence did keep me entertained since it was mostly african americans. By far this remake in my opinion is bullshit.
well these axels are rusted as fuck and the wheels fell off on friday night for me.
As for the Nightmare On Elm St. remake, i wouldnt say that im looking foward to it but im interested in it because from what i’ve read, it’s supposed to be about freddy before he was supernatural, when he was killing little kids and the townsfolk came and murdered him after he was let off on a technicality during his trial. Sounds interesting enough, hopefully robert englund is playing freddy cause otherwise i don’t think it’d be worth seeing.
On a completely different note, a few years back don coscarelli was in talks to do a remake of the phantasm series, he was gonna make it into a trilogy. That would have been so awesome, but it fell through. The first phantasm is an absolute classic but 2-4 are lacking.
Haven’t seen it yet but I plan to next weekend. I tried to see it with my GF last night and damn the line was long. Nothing else was playing at the time so we just went home. My expectations for remakes are usually low, this way I’m pleasantly surprised when it turns out better then I expected.
The ending is predictable…? That sucks, I find that most movies now a days are usually predictable. Now to counter balance that I stop thinking during the movie and just shut off my brain and just enjoy whats on the screen.
I litterally just got back from this movie and saw you had posted a review, real good timing I guess. I agree there isn’t anything new, but in a way I’m glad. Everything has been done so many times that in order to do something new they would really have to stretch it. I feel they did a good job at making this movie brutal, nothing corny. Also i felt the exact same way about the ending…
nintendoworldchampionship: “Tho, the auidence did keep me entertained since it was mostly african americans.”
And James, you also forgot to mention that Jason Voorhees was played by Derek Mears who is a stuntman and that all the various people including Kane Hoddder who played Jason in 4 of the 13 films in the franchise.
And what are your thoughts on the “Nightmare On Elm Street” prequel that is supposedly supposed to explain what Freddy was like before he accepted the offer from the 3 dream demons who gave him his powers before he was killed by the parents of the children he killed?
I thought it was pretty good myself. Nothing more than what I was expecting, and nothing less.
I do have to say, James, that I actually appreciated the ending to this movie. Yes it was cliche, yes it was predictable, yes it was tacky, but it really couldn’t have ended any other way.
Also having viewed your ‘Top 13 Moments’ prior to going into the theatre to enjoy this remake, it was instantly seen as an homage to one particular pick on your list.
So in my opinion, the ending was exactly what it needed to be. Predictable, and true to the slash-horror classics that spawned it.
Other than your opinion on the end, I agree with your review 100%. 3 1/2 Hockey Masks out of 5 for my rating.
Damn James, we reviewed the movie at about the same time. I agree with alot of your concerns and it’s nice to see another perspective on the film. I didn’t comment on the ending, but I agree. Just because the name of the movie is Friday the 13th doesn’t mean you can put your own bullshit twist on it.
What was your view on the Woodchipper scene? It was like a constant jerk-off for me wondering when and who was going to go into it, and when it DOES happen it’s like. THATS it?
Great review, and I’m glad you enjoyed it more than me. At least I hope you did.
Man, I guess they decided to play it safe with this one. That’s fine, if anything too over-the-top or unexpected happened, I’m sure we’d get people bitching about it.
I’m just kind of tired of these Platinum Dunes remakes already. Texas Chainsaw was so-so. Amityville was blah, The Hitcher was just horrible. Really, none of them hold up to the originals. They’re too “Hollywood” and completely lack the grittiness of the earlier films. They just feel so assembly-line, and that’s the feeling that I’m getting when I hear the reaction to this new Friday…..so I’m passing on it. Too bad, I wish Derek Mears luck. I met and got to talk to him at Horrorhound Indiana last year. A true class act, and I hope things work out for him.
Ugh….and Platinum Dunes is remaking The Birds…..WTF????
I have to admit, the first twenty minutes or so of the movie were absolutely solid. In particular, the minute leading up the actual title was pretty kickass. After that, it was very hit and miss. Apparently, the ending was a reshoot and it’s painfully obvious. The original ending will probably be on the DVD, so I’m curious if that will change my opinion of how it ended. Still, it’s far from the worst film in the series… I’d put it somewhere in the middle, which is better than I was hoping for this when I first heard about it, to be honest.
Gotta admit i havent seen it yet, but i guess two and a half machetes means ill watch it sometime. I think the teenagers in the movie look a lot like the ones in the house of wax: dumb teenagers waiting to get butchered! only jared padalecki looks promising in the movie.
I wasn’t into Jason or Friday the 13th so I avoided the 2009 edition like the dark plague. But if you want to see a movie where you can get some with the missus, go see “Twilight”.
I really liked the movie. I thought it was a nice update to the original series (pre-zombie). I liked how Jason runs more. Its true that he ran in part 2 and 3, but in the later sequels, he walked, stalked or power walked after his victims. To me, this made Jason more aggressive and scary.
A lot of my friends have been talking about what Jason’s best kill was. Personally, I think his best kill was in part 6 when you see him push the girl into the cabin and later throw her throw her through a window before pulling her back in. You don’t actually see what he does to her. You don’t even get to see her body. You only see the after effects when the Sheriff and Megan come into the cabin and see the blood over EVERYTHING. I think this is great because it leaves it up to a person’s imagination and interpretation.
James, if I can make some suggestions for future videos, can you do a countdown of what you think are Jason’s best kills? Also, for the 2009 Monster Madness, maybe you can do a Jason/Freddy-athon, similar to your Godzilla-thon, where you review all the Friday and/or Nightmare movies.
Nice review. Just as I thought it would be. I haven’t seen the movie, but I know the type. And all those teenagers seem to become more generic with each remake. Only if they did the death scenes more carefully.
The problem with remakes (specially horror, since that what the genre became nowadays) is that producers try to adapt the old movies to please younger viewers, losing some authenticity in the process. It’s like they’re trying to bring the franchise to the new viewers instead of the opposite, which makes sense business-wise, but doesn’t show what made the older movies so special. So it doesn’t really add nothing very interesting.
As I said earlier, I didn’t watch this movie, but I actually want to. But the opinion I expressed applies to the whole movie industry.
Great review as always, James. One thing I’m suprised you didn’t mention however, is if this is supposed to be a remake of the original, that Jason is the the killer. This may just be avoiding spoilers for those who are completely unaware of the first, er, first movie. Anyway, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
I enjoyed it, but yeah, James you’ve got a point in the hack eyed ending, etc. But Jason was pretty damn awesome this time. No zombie/possession/cyborg bullshit. Just a mongoloid survivalist with the hugest fucking machete I’ve ever seen. (seriously, that thing was comically over sized) You do make a good point in coming up with a new title for a remake, instead of having it have the same name, but Hollywood isn’t that inventive these days. F13 could have sufficed.
….AND THE ASS KISSING AWARD GOES TO….. KitKatBar3003!!!!! With and honorable mention to KARMA-X !!!! Thank you for playing and don’t forget to pick up your prizes at the door. =)
Awww man now i really wanna know what happens at the end!
also nice to see micheal bay re-using the transformers bully/guy
i cant belive i dint know about this film till last month i though bay was too busy making the second tf movie and now i find out hes making producing the “UNBORN” ?!?!?!
Okay, here is CohibaMan’s commentary about the Friday the 13th remake.
There will be spoilers. You’ve been warned.
The newest incarnation of Friday the 13th is less of a remake and more of a re-imagining of this venerable horror film franchise. Key elements have been changed, with some changes obviously being better than others.
I think that what a lot of disappointed viewers have missed is the fact that one of those key changes was made to the plot. Jason has completely different reasons for killing here than in all of his prior films. Herein lies the biggest twist of the film.
You see, we are led to believe, during the opening scene, that Jason wants revenge because he saw his mother beheaded while trying to avenge the death of her poor drowned baby retard. The filmmakers want us to believe this so that they can throw us a curve ball that will rock our worlds.
You see, in this film, Jason kills to protect his stash of weed. He’s dead serious about defending his precious bud and he’ll fucking murder you if you come anywhere near it. He cares so much about his sweet Mary Jane that, as a deterrent to would-be thieves, he’s willing to go so far as to butcher your asshole friends as well if he so much as finds you even touching his stuff. You see, Jason knows he has some good shit growing around Crystal Lake.
Unfortunately, life as a hermit pothead isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Jason hasn’t had any real human contact in a long-ass time. Up until the time the first group of campers came along, his only conversational experiences were the extended philosophical dialogs he held telepathically with his teddy bear Horatio Firchsimmons. In addition, he had never gotten laid.
Blue balls will make even the best of men do awful things. Jason lacks communication skills. When Jason sees a couple screwing around in a tent, he doesn’t do what you or I would do. You or I would offer the couple some hits off of our fine stash of weed and start some kinky three-way action. Jason is a bit more passive-aggressive if he catches you fooling around in the middle of the forest. He waits for one of you to run out of the tent to yell at some dummy you just hacked up and sets up an elaborate practical joke for you. In this case, the practical joke involved a sleeping bag hanging from a tree, a fire, and a bear trap. I guess you’d have to be there to get the full effect of the joke.
Later, Jason chains one of the chicks up in his basement. I know that the film takes a lot of flak for this, but it’s really just an extension of Jason’s new personality. See, he’s lonely and she’s cute. He figures that she’s lonely too, seeing as he just killed her boyfriend. But Jason’s also shy – he can’t see why a babe like that would ever want to go out with a loser like him, even if he personally knows that he’s super-cool when he’s stoned. So he just keeps her locked up down there, trying to work up the nerve to ask her out. Unfortunately, every time he almost pops the question, he gets bad vibes off of her like she doesn’t really want to be near him. It’s a frustrating experience. His only outlet is to go out and kill more people, creating a vicious cycle.
I’m not going to go any further into the plot of this film. It more than suffices to state that this is a bold new direction for the series, one that I personally found quite satisfying. Jason goes from being the two dimensional figure we witnessed through the original line of films and moves into being something fuller and deeper, a real human being with his own motivations and shortcomings who simply wants to be high and get laid in peace.
Jason’s always been a badass to me. Great review as always, unfortunately I haven’t been able to see it because the last time I went to the theaters I had to stare at giant cardboard cutouts of Madea Goes To Jail, Dance Flick, and Night at the Museum 2 for way too long. Not really, I just haven’t had the time. But…have you seen the Madea Goes To Jail stand thing…
While I didn’t mention this in my little mini review, I thought it was rather odd that the film would have the same actor from Transformers playing another prick named “Trent.”
That poor guy is in serious danger of getting typecast, and the only person he’ll have to blame is Michael Bay.
You better see this horror movie called Friday The 13th 2009 on I have seen it with lot of interest what I like was the revenge of the dead man, personally it was a movie I really feel inside of me. Anger and horror wow, don’t scared it is not be who killing at the camp. Free movies http://www.80millionmoviesfree.com is where I saw the movie many people said it was a good remake
James, I was waiting to see your reactions on this, thank you– I think I’ll check this one on DVD. You ever watch those “Sleepaway Camp” movies growing up? Plenty of titties, and some good killing scenes… I remember renting those from the small video store in the 80’s growing up. (I’m 30)
oh, and Karma- X and Cohiba man– You guys writing a book?? Holy shit those are long-ass comments… I was going to read them, but I’m trying to get off work at 4pm today, and it’s already 12:30pm
James, you were spot on about the asshole. I really really really wanted him to die. He also played the asshole in the movie “Accepted”, seems like he’s gonna be typecast like the bad guy in the Karate Kid was, always playing the asshole. I’ve been a fan of the series since before I could crawl(My parents had me when they were 22. I was the 3rd and parenting had kicked in really)But overall yeah, it was ok. I guess I didn’t like how jason was more of a hunter/trapper. The old Jason would have just gone in, done his job and went back to the shack.
James, I’m also curious as to your age. We seem to be born around the same time from the ages you give in the avgn series.
I liked the movie, I couldn’t stop laughing. Yea, it didn’t offer anything new but I really wasn’t expecting it to. All I wanted was a new look to it so that it didn’t feel like a B movie or an old movie. It was also better for me since I had a GF that’s never even seen any of the Friday the 13th movies. She was scared shit less and spent half the movie with her coat over her head. Ah, good times, good times.
From the get go I tried to have an open mind on this film but I constantly keep falling back into the rut of holding my head and shaking it in disgust as I watch them rape yet another childhood hero of mine. Yeah sure he scared me back in the day but I loved him for it.
I don’t feel this is an Fthe13th movie for the most part. To me it feels like they took the Jason mystique and tacked it onto another “Wrong Turn” or “Hatchet” or any other kind of movie where the killer kinda remains just this crazy dude in a forest that really has no flavour to him. That sounds gay…fuck off haha
=============SOMEWHAT SPOILERS TO FOLLOW=============
Anyway, Jason has an underground lair? Come on…that’s bullshit. He happens to live beside a giant field of pot? Yeah ok sure… The locals happen to know about him and have done FUCK ALL about it?? Sure thing… All the sudden he decides NOW is the time to kill locals? And for no good reason grabs the hockey mask from a douchebags country farm house? Anyone else find it odd that he had that hockey mask?
Look I know the previous movies were campy and ridiculous and cheesy. I get that…but they have a charm and tone that is worth the time. Anything past 6 is pretty much a horrific raping of Jason as well, but this? This was something that didn’t take itself with a grain of salt…instead we got the stupid Texas Chainsaw Massacre lighting(dark foreground with blue dim reflective light, black background lit up with a massive flood light in the distance…why?…cuz it’s picturesque guys…Rather ITS MOOD KILLING!!!)
Not that Jason hasn’t been able to move at super fast speeds before, but in this movie the transfer of his body from standing beside the black kid to the top of the house within seconds is just fuckin silly. And during all this bullshit, the script makes one of the characters decide to go into the darkest part of the house, alone, during a serial killing spree…yeah sounds about right. I’ve heard of suspending disbelief on a film, but this was down right mind numbing.
And how bout this… WHY THE FUCK DID THE BLACK GUY DECIDE TO START JERKING OFF WHILE HIS OTHER TOKEN ASIAN FRIEND WAS ABOUT TO COME BACK AND SUPER RICH GUY WAS RIGHT THERE WITH SUPER SLUT GIRL!?!?!
I’m sorry but this movie was over stylized to look like a ‘new’ horror movie which is the food equivalent of eating 17,000 chicken balls with out the chicken inside…yup, just a maw full of gobs of batter. Take that taste in your mouth and wrap it around a script that was written for the sake of a pay off of a legacy without ANY sense of spirit or love of horror, throw it into the theatres with a bunch of kids who’ve never really experienced what REAL horrors are like and you get a money machine.
Bravo Michael Bay. You’ve managed to kill at the box office again based solely on content. Why don’t you go and make a sequel to yer trashing the Transformers?…Oh you already did? Can I see the trailer? Oh…I did see the trailer? At Friday the 13th you say? There’s a 2 minute time period that I somehow forgot because I was too busy having a fucking seizure on the ground while I was TRYING to fucking understand what the christ was going on on screen with all the glinting steel, convoluted horrid character re-designs, mundane action sequences and lack of congruent ideas strobing at me all at once! IT was like the fucking Chocobot hour from the Simpsons.
Now that is over blown and sarcastic, but I can honestly say that I have no idea when Trasnformers 2 is coming out because I was so lost and uninterested in what was on screen that I wasn’t sure if the date was actually put up.
But I digress. Would have it been too hard to come up with a script that was somewhat inventive, somewhat nostalgic, and somewhat scary? Could we have scary back? Remember scary? I do. And this movie was not that. It was another styled pile of steaming shit that went through the Hollywood combine and came out exactly what they had hoped for.
Remember… the original Friday the 13th was created from the intent to make money, sure, but was done with the intentions to follow/rip-off/and or battle Halloweens ability to scare the shit out of everyone.
This just followed Rob Zombie’s horrible remake of Halloween…you know the one where the 7 foot tall wrestler with the Slipknot mask goes ape shit?
Bring the plausibility and real threat back to horror, otherwise it just becomes another subtle Sci-Fi Thriller with gore…
Dude there was a creative kill in there. remember how jason hung that girl in a sleeping bag over the fire and burned to death? i was not expecting that it was creative.
the major flaw i found with this film that should of pissed of all moviegoers was the fact that jason didnt have his famous whisper at all in this film we expect a “ki, ki, ki, how, how ,how” while he’s stocking his prey and not once, it made u completly realize that it was in fact a remake and that jason shall never be the same. all in all i loved the movie save the ending, although it did open it up for the remakes of the 9 sequals if they are ever doing that. idk, in the end i would say it is deffinatly a good movie to watch if u love slashers, i wonder if they’ll get kane hodder to do any of the other jason films if they make them, i mean he starred in hatchet a couple years ago and he is the one who made jason famous with his huge build.
You nailed it, man. I’ve been a fan of the F13 films for as long as I can remember. In fact, the first movie I can remember seeing when I was a kid is Friday the !3th part 6. Anyway, you’re dead on, especially with the predictability. I watched it with my wife, and spent the whole movie telling her who was going to die, when, and why. And honestly, I was about 90% right, as I’m sure thousands of others did. It’s not bad for a “new twist” on the Slasher Genre, but not as good as Hatchet.
I made a review as well for this movie, so now I shall express my own thoughts once again.
The re-make I have to say was a breath of fresh air. It was a whole new start to the Friday The 13th franchise, and it was great. It was time to start new, because I think another sequel (especially since it would follow Freddy VS Jason), would have just been hard. After all, back during the makings of Freddy VS Jason, director Ronny Yu said that although he wanted to go with continuity when it came to Jason, he said that Jason would have been “reduced to a pile of goo”, but I’m sure you already knew that. XD
Anyway, it was very interesting how they made Jason in this. They managed to keep his regular hydrocephalus condition image, but made him a few steps more clever, which I thought was neat. They actually did it right, and I’m surprised at that. Jason was more aggressive, and was, what a friend of mine describes him as, “street smart”, which was cool.
I do agree that his killings were expected and not all exciting, but he got the job done none the less and they weren’t bad at all.
What was awesome was the fact that Jason actually had a much more fair amount of screen time. (Other than probably Part In all the movies I’ve seen, we’d be lucky to see Jason and his killings for maybe up to a minute if we were lucky. Between those, it was the victims and their mindless stuff. Bored me to death, I might add.
There was one kill in the movie that I truly didn’t expect. It just came out of nowhere! (Hint: Arrow)
But this time, it was great to see Jason a little more and spend a little less time on the oh-so-poor victims and their upcoming demise.
I have to say, the victims really did deserve it far more than I’d ever seen. The victims have of course gotten their asses handed to them before, but man, this time was a real punishment!
Clay was pretty cool, I actually liked him, and I don’t normally care for the victims. (Except for Crispin Glover in part 4, he was all right) And he wasn’t looking for trouble, as you said, so that helped!
Oh, and Jason has warping powers. I swear. XD I don’t know how he was able to get on a roof of a ten-foot high house (give or take a few feet) in a matter of seconds.
Trent was an ass. I was just waiting for him to get his ass handed to him by Jason. I agree, he was a real asshole you just wanted to punch, and he had no special reasons for being an ass. Weird.
My favourite scene, or one of them at least, was when Jason found the Hockey mask and looks at himself in the mirror. I thought it was really awesome how we got to see him in a more personal, intimate moment on his own. That was so cool. I loved that scene, it was….well, it was different. But yeah, it was cool how we see him actually get the mask. If you remember in Part 3, he stole it from that one guy, but we didn’t see it happen! He just randomly popped out wearing it. What a piss off that was.
Okay, I’m starting to ramble now.
Overall, the movie was really good. Derek Mears was an excellent Jason. Plus, he’s a big fan of Jason and that I think was a good part of how he played the role so well. He really made Jason come alive. I enjoyed the movie, and I await the sequel. …Hey, it’s Friday The 13th!
So, great review! You were good and fair, and you made some very valid points.
Oh, and one last thing. It was so funny how Jared Padelacki AND Jensen Ackles, who both star on Supernatural, had both stared in re-makes of hit horror films. XD I thought that was hilarious.
I didn’t get to go see it due to my friends being pussies and my mom getting in a car crash. Ah, life. |:
I’ll take your word for it, though.
Also I just bought Princess Tomato off eBay for you. I hope you don’t already have it, haha. I’ll send an email to Mike (?) asap.
thirst for blood and tits….i loled at this one
i love Ft13th….i hope to see more.
oh btw grats again for being featured in the documentary
I can’t get over how you pronounce ‘Friday’. But not being a native speaker, who am I to judge?
Thumps up for the review, exactly what I thought after the movie.
Nice work James.
yeah i saw this opening night and it was so-so. Good review without spoiling. By the way i was just wondering when the new AVGN is coming out. Ill keep checking every 2 hours or so.
[...] See the original post: Friday the 13th (2009) Review [...]
I didn’t get to see it, but I did get to see Nosferatu for the first time, so it all worked out.
Might see it later when it comes out on DVD, or something.
I still have plenty of things to post.
yeah ik its just he said that it would be out in the next two days on the description of the geek card promo so…….idk
ok thanks for letting me know. I love all your videos. the movie reviews are my favorite.
Also wanted to add, I was glad they didn’t add any bullshit backstory to Jason. The whole prequel thing is getting tiring. Maybe they learned from the Halloween remake.
Yeah, it is indeed a classic style Jason flick, not much to expect, but it doesn’t offer anything new at all.
true also i made a mistake on my post saying that you said a new nerd video would be out. it only said friday the 13th related video so my bad.
I don’t get it.
@ Hatchimatchi: Sorry, but it’s been confirmed in this entertainment story located here: http://www.riskybusinessblog.com/2009/02/a-director-moves-onto-nightmare-on-elm-street.html that Robert Englund won’t be reprising the role of Freddy in the “Nightmare On Elm Street” reboot film.
Ugh….and Platinum Dunes is remaking The Birds…..WTF????
i havnt seen any of the friday the 13th films lol but i still would’nt mind seeing the remake though its 5 bucks if i go too the theatre on tuesday
I saw it too on Feb 13 and i expected a bit more.. If there is anyone able too read German you are welcome to comment on my review in my blog
Friday the 13th rule number 1
1. When you fuck, your fucked!
@spider-man super fan: he already did a countdown of his favorite top 13 kills/moments.
Here’s the link if u wanna check it out:

Take all the time you need for the new AVGN. And take GameTrailers for all they are worth!
When is there going to be a NEW avgn video ?? The wait is killing me !!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and as a newbe and a fan for 2 yrs at least …..I love your work !
Well, i can’t watch it yet, I’m an Australian and Friday the 13th (New) hasn’t been announced yet, hell! we don’t even have a trailer here!

i cant belive i dint know about this film till last month i though bay was too busy making the second tf movie and now i find out hes making producing the “UNBORN” ?!?!?!
CohibaMan’s Rating: Freeky-deeky.
Wow he sounded a little disapointed at the end of the review.
Wonko The Sane: Hey, thanks! I am winnar!
@ CohibaMan:
“Trent?” Like the guy in the Resident Evil novels that was S.D. Perry’s universal plothole-filler-upper? =P
I Saw the movie it was really great. But I agree you realy knew what was going to happen. It’s like the firts ,second, and third
In the Ending I mean^^
=============SOMEWHAT SPOILERS TO FOLLOW=============
Bring the plausibility and real threat back to horror, otherwise it just becomes another subtle Sci-Fi Thriller with gore…

i think the movie was just ok..good review btw
!!
Dude there was a creative kill in there. remember how jason hung that girl in a sleeping bag over the fire and burned to death? i was not expecting that it was creative.
i havent seen this movie yet but really wanna see it!!
im guessing at the end jason dies and some of the survivors escape i bet!!! typical ending!!!
Saw it opening night and time, loved it.
the major flaw i found with this film that should of pissed of all moviegoers was the fact that jason didnt have his famous whisper at all in this film we expect a “ki, ki, ki, how, how ,how” while he’s stocking his prey and not once, it made u completly realize that it was in fact a remake and that jason shall never be the same. all in all i loved the movie save the ending, although it did open it up for the remakes of the 9 sequals if they are ever doing that. idk, in the end i would say it is deffinatly a good movie to watch if u love slashers, i wonder if they’ll get kane hodder to do any of the other jason films if they make them, i mean he starred in hatchet a couple years ago and he is the one who made jason famous with his huge build.
I simly hate remakes!!!!!!
(Other than probably Part
In all the movies I’ve seen, we’d be lucky to see Jason and his killings for maybe up to a minute if we were lucky.
